DEDICATION

I dedicate my dissertation work with a special feeling of gratitude to my family

and those who supported me, to those whose words of encouragement and push

for tenacity ring in my ears, most especially to Almighty Allah for his mercies

to see me through and for the wisdom, knowledge and understanding to have a

successful Internship.
ABSTRACT

This technical report is based on the experience I gained during my period of

industrial Training at Rolling Tech. in the Repairs department, where I was able

to observe, learn and know about Computer Hardware configuration, Operating

System Installation, Troubleshooting system errors

GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANISATION OF
ATTACHMENT

My Industrial Training was done at Rollin Technologies located at, 29/31

Obafemi Awolowo, Glass House, Ikeja Lagos. Which is a technology focused

business dealing in sales of Computer systems, Laptops, computer peripherals

amongst others and they also have a device repairs and upgrades which is

where I spent most of my time.

COMPUTER REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE TOOLS

To accurately and easily troubleshoot a system, a computer engineering

needs to possess all the basic tools required for computer maintenance and
other relevant tools also. Some of these tools include:

Hardware Tools
I. Tweezers: It is a too; used for picking up and manipulating objects too
small to be handled with the human hand.

II. Long Nose Plier: It used to cut wires and can get in and out of tight spots,
unlike regular pliers.

III. Soldering Iron: It is essential for repairs on mother board but with
extreme care. When used carelessly, it can destroy the board as well as
injure the engineer.

IV. Hot air blower/Work Station: This is used in desoldering parts that are
faulty or have been being wrongly soldered. It weakens the lead. It is
also used in the application of paste (heat dependent gum) on board.
V. Set of Screw Drivers: The different parts of the computer are made of
nuts and screws of different sizes, thus the need for multi-mouth screw
driver set. It is used in the loosening of nuts and screws.

VI. Multi-meter: It is used to measure voltage, current, continuity of wire or

motherboard, resistances at different points on the board and a lot
more.

VII. Storage (USB Flash and External Hard disk): This stores all the engineer’s
working softwares. Without which the engineer can do so little.
Software Tools
Like hardware tools, there are a variety of software tools that can be used to
help technicians pinpoint and troubleshoot problems. Many of these tools are
free and several come with the Windows operating system. Examples are;
i. Disk Management tools: Initializes disks, creates partitions, and formats
partitions.
ii. ScanDisk : Checks the integrity of files and folders on a hard drive by
scanning the file system. These tools might also check the disk surface for
physical errors.
iii. Disk Cleanup: Clears space on a hard drive by searching for files that can
be safely deleted.
iv. HP Diagnostic tool: It troubleshoots the inactive hardwares and tries
activate them, on request. When unable to fix a problem, it gives the cause of
such problem (e.g missing drive).
v. DriverPack Online: It scans a system and then lists the missing drives or
drives that needs update in the system.
vi. Windows Update Diagnostic: It is a preinstalled software that scans and
updates system component drivers and also preinstalled softwares.
vii. HP Support Solutions Framework: It scans faulty systems and provide
online solutions.

PROTECTION TOOLS
Virus and spyware can damage operating systems, applications, and data.
Computers that have been pinfected may even have problems with hardware
performance or component failure, thus the need for protection tools.
i. Windows Action Center: Checks the status of essential security settings.
The Action Center continuously checks to make sure that the software firewall
and antivirus programs are running. It also ensures that automatic updates
download and install automatically.
ii. Antivirus program: Protects the system against virus attacks.
iii. Antispyware program: Protects against software that sends information
about web surfing habits to an attacker. Spyware can be installed without the
knowledge or consent of the user.
iv. Windows Firewall: Runs continuously to protect against unauthorized
communications to and from your computer. But when a system has a working
anti-virus, the operating system automatically disables the windows firewall, as
the two perform same function.
WORKDONE

During the industrial training I was exposed to some areas of computer

software and hardware. I was introduced to various computer hardware

components like the system board (Motherboard), disk drives (hard disk

drives, CD/DVD drives), system memory, slots inside the computer system

units (memory slots), system ports (USB ports, power ports) and pins on the

Motherboard, central processing unit, power supply unit, Video Graphic

Adapter cable, system Monitor and some other hardware components that

can be found inside the computer system units.

Troubleshooting: During the industrial training I learnt how we can

troubleshoot a faulty computer system as well as a dead computer system

to know which part of the hardware components is damaged so as to

replace or repair the affected component to bring the system back to a

perfect working state for effective functionality of the computer system.

Troubleshooting is the process of figuring out how to solve a computer

problem. Troubleshooting is a form of problem solving, often applied to

repair failed processes on a computer system. It is a logical, systematic

search for the source of a problem in order to solve it, and make the
computer or process operational again. Troubleshooting is needed to

identify the symptoms. Determining the most likely cause is a process of

elimination—eliminating potential causes of computer problem. Finally,

troubleshooting requires confirmation that the solution restores the

computer process to its working state. In general, troubleshooting is the

identification of diagnosis of "trouble" in the management flow of a

corporation or a system caused by a failure of some kind. The problem is

initially described as symptoms of malfunction, and troubleshooting is the

process of determining and remedying the causes of these symptoms. A

system can be described in terms of its expected, desired or intended

behavior (usually, for artificial systems, its purpose). Events or inputs to the

system are expected to generate specific results or outputs. (For example,

selecting the "print" option from various computer applications is intended

to result in a hardcopy emerging from some specific device). Any

unexpected or undesirable behavior is a symptom. Troubleshooting is the

process of isolating the specific cause or causes of the symptom. Frequently

the symptom is a failure of the product or process to produce any results.

(Nothing was printed, for example). Corrective action can then be taken to

prevent further failures of a similar kind.

During this industrial training, I learnt how to disassemble a whole

computer system by removing one component at a time until all the

components are fully removed from the computer system unit. Apart from

this, I also learnt how to reassemble all the components back to their

previous position or unit to form a complete computer system.

The disassembling of the computer system starts with externally connected

device detachment. The computer system must be turned off, if not then

the computer system should be successfully shut down and then detaching

the external devices from the computer system.

Removing and replacing the drives: There can be several types of drives

present in your computer system, Hard disk drive, CD/DVD/Blue-ray drives.

They usually have a power connector and a data cable attached from the

device to a controller card or a connector on the motherboard

(L-R) Desktop Hard Drive, Portable (Laptop) Hard Drive

Removing the memory module: Memory modules are mounted on the

motherboard as the chips that can be damaged by manual force if applied

improperly. Carefully the chip should be handled only by the edges.

Memory modules have different specifications for different motherboard, it

should be checked and verified the memory module being replaced is the

one supported by the system else the computer system will not boot. The

various specifications include DDR4 (PC4 on laptops), DDR3 and so on.

DDR5 is the latest generation of specification but is not popularly available

on the market.
MY EXPERIENCE

Training at Rolling Tech widened my idea on a working man’s experience. The

punctuality and loyalty involved when you are obliged to officially take orders
from someone for the primary sake of skill acquisition.

LESSON AND ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

From the attended computer training class and self-practice enhanced my

knowledge of hardware computer related issues, and I have also learnt a few
tricks such as short-circuiting a motherboard to turn it on.
I have also had a taste of working for a living.

CONCLUSION

I really appreciate Rollin Tech for giving me the opportunity to learn and
experience first-hand what being in a work position and offering my services to
customers. I look forward to gaining more knowledge during the upcoming 6-
month SIWES program.
