Installation and Operation Manual

Bombas SHS

Congratulations! You have just acquired a product developed with the highest technology. Our pumps
have been designed and manufactured with the highest quality parts. Our long experience as
manufacturers and special care and dedication in production, make our products meet the most
demanding standards.
To facilitate maintenance and operation, this manual was prepared, which brings important
information and is a guide for the installation, operation and maintenance of our Wastewater pumps.
Please read the instructions carefully before installing your equipment. Save it for later reference.
Inspect your pumps carefully and make sure that there are no missing parts and that they have not
deteriorated in transport. Make the claim to the transport company as soon as possible if necessary.
The design, materials and processes used in the manufacture of our products ensure correct
operation. However, the life and duration Will depend on the proper application, installation, periodic
inspection and, in general, careful preventive maintenance.

2. Safety Recommendations
• Wear safety shoes when handling heavy parts or tools.
• Do not operate pumps with discharge valves closed.
• Do not remove plugs or drain valves when the equipment is running.
• Never try to couple pipes to the pumps by force. The sizes must be correct.
• For any maintenance work always disconnect the current.
• Make sure the pump is isolated from a pressurized system before disassembling it.
• Use safety gloves to handle parts with sharps edges or sharp edges.
• Never apply heat to disassemble the pump. There may be a risk of explosión.
• Do not wear loose clothing that could be caught in the impeller or other moving parts.
• Never put your hands in the suction or discharge openings.
• Do not handle the pump by holding it by the cable assembly.
• Secure the pump before operating it to prevent it from falling or sliding.
• Operating the pump with the discharge valve closed decreases the life of the bearings
and the mechanical seal.
• Pumps are not recommended for use in swimming pool or recreational wáter facilites.
• Disconnect the pump from the power source before carry out any maintenance work.

These pump have been designed to operate safely when used and maintained in accordance
with this manual.
A pump is a device that contains rotating parts that can therefore be dangerous. Operators and
maintenance personnel must be aware of this and follow the safety recommendations.

Pre-installation Precautions
• Be careful not to damage the motor terminal when unpacking the unit.
• Check the nameplate and make sure that the data corresponds to the pump you
purchased.
• Make sure that the voltajes are those specified for the work of the pump.
• Keep this manual for future reference.
• Always transport and place this pump in an upright position.

WARNING!
Sewage Pumps are NOT recommended for:
(a) Pump flammable liquids
(b) Be used in areas considered dangerous.
(c) Be used in swimming pools or aquatic recreational facilities.
(d) Pump liquids with abrasive solids.
(e) Operate without the recommended submergence level.

The use of these in the aforementioned cases makes the guarantee void. When pumping
abrasive liquids is required it is suggested to request a hand faced seal instead of the lower
standard seal. Consult the factory for the most recommended selection.

3. INSTALLATION
Location
Never install pumps in trenches with loose soil. The pump can sink and the suction can be
clogged. It is recommended that the submergence level be the one shown in diagram No.1

Submergence Level
The pump casing where the motor is housed contains oil to cool the motor lubricate the
bearings and the mechanical seal. These models can operate for long periods of time without
pumping liquids. However, a level of immersion is recommended to achieve better cooling and
increase the life of the motor as indicated in the following diagram:

DISCHARGE CONNECTION
The discharge pipe should be as short as posible. Both a check valve are recommended for
each pump being used. The check valve is used to prevent backflow into the sump.
Excessive backflow can cause flooding and/or damage to the pump. The shutoff valve is
used to stop the Flow in the pump for maintenance of the check valve.
Ruhrpumpen supply a stationary elbow with dicharge system designed to allow the
sbmersible sewage pump to be easily installed or removed without the need for
maintenance personnel to enter the well. For more information, or consult one of our
advisers.

Level Controls
(Optional)
Liquid Level Controls
Level controls must be supported by a bracket that is attached to the well wall, deck, or
junction box. Cable grips are used to hold cables in place in the mount. The level control can
be changed by adjusting the cable length according to the plans and specifications. Make sure
that the level controls are not misplaced, or lack movement in their swing travel, and that the
pump is fully submerged when the level control is in the off mode.

Electric Connections

WARNING!
*Do not use the set of cables to lift or move the pump, for this use only the
handle that come installed.

Power and Control Cables

The pump mounted cable assembly should not be modified in any way except for shortening for
a specific application. Any splicing between the pump and the control panel must be made in
accordance with all electrical codes. Do not leave the ends of the cable exposed to moisture, as
moisture could seep into the motor and cause serious damage. The White wire is not ground.
The black, white and red are energy trasport (conductors). The green wire is for the ground
connection.

WARNING!
All models of submersible pumps must be grounded (green color)

Overload Protection
The normally closed (N/C) is the temperatura sensor, it is embedded in the motor winding and
detects excessive heat in the event of an overload situation. The termal sensor trips when the
motor is too hot and Will automatically reset when the pump motor cools down to a safe
temperatura. It is recommended that the thermal sensor be connected in series to an alarm
device to alert the operator that overgeating has occurred and thus stop pump operation. In the
event os an overload, the cause must be checked and corrected.

MOISTURE SENSOR
It is normally open contact, it is installed in the pump seal chamber that Will detect any
moisture present. It is recommended that this sensor be connected in series to an alarm
device or motor start coil to alert the operator that moisture has been detected. In the case of
detecting moisture, the pump must be checked and repaired.

Wire Size
Consult a qualified electrician to determine wire size suitable, if more power cable is required.
See table for electrical infomration.

4. Operation
Before operation the pumps, check the following points:

• Voltage and phases: Check the electrical data contained in the identification plate.

• Rotation of the motors: It must be correct to avoid damage to the motor and the pump.
Give a soft start and note the direction of rotation. It must coincide with what is indicated on
the plate (clockwise looking ant the top of the casing). If the rotation is not as indicated,
interchange two acbles in the connection of the control board. Do not make changes to
motor connections. Check again.

• Pump Identification: Record the serial number of the pump for later reference.

7
Bombas SHS

• Insulation Test: Take a Reading of the insulations resistance of the motor. These values, the
voltages and amperajes in the power lines should be saved fot futures reference.

• Pumping Test: Once the pump has been properly connected and lowered into the well, its
operation should be checked for a few Works cycles. You must write down the well emptying
times or running times per cycle. The casing must contain oil to cool the motor.

5. Maintenance

WARNING!
Before beginning any maintenance or repair work on the pumps, close the
discharge valve and disconnect the power.

Since the motor is of the oil-lubricated type, no other lubrication or maintenance work ir
required.
These pumps are generally very reliable in their operation and in most cases can last for many
years in trouble-free operation.
However, like any mechanical equipment, a preventive maintenance program must be carried
out that incluides:
a) Review of the motor casing to verify its level and oil contamination.
b) Inspection of the condition of the impeller and body for wear or clogging.
c) Review of the motor and bearings.
d) Verification of seal wear and leaks.

The pump is supplied from the factory with oil for motor cooling only replace the oil of there is
a failure or you perform internal maintenance tasks for that use Texaco Diala-Oil-AX dielectric
oil or Mobil D.T.E Oil Light according to the recommended quantity in the next table>

WARNING!
Check that the oil is below the oil level in the upper part about 4 cms,
otherwise it would cause excessive hydraulic pressure that could destroy the
pump. Oil overfills voids warranty.

Cleaning
If the pump is used in transportable applications, it it necessary to clean it after each use by
having it pump clean water in order to avoid the formation of deposits of dirt and scale.
