All Questions Carry Equal Marks
1 Fig.1 shows two rigid bars AB and BC connected by a hinge at B forming a rigid body
assemblage of SDOF system. Whereas the bar AB has a mass of M distributed all along its
length, the bar BC is massless. A point mass of m is attached at the location shown on bar BC.
Determine the generalised mass, generalised damping, generalised stiffness and generalised force
for the system. Use the virtual work approach. [14]
2 For the undamped SDOF system subjected to periodic loading as shown in Fig.2, derive the
expression for displacement. Consider only the first three terms of Fourier series. Sketch the
displacements from 0s to 4s for every one second time intervals. Mass of the system =
500kN.Sec2/m, stiffness = 50000kN/m. [14]
3 For the 3-DOF system shown in Fig.3, determine the mass matrix, stiffness matrix, frequency
matrix and mode shape matrix. [14]
4 a) Derive the general expression for Lagrange’s equations of motion for MDOF systems
using standard notations. [7+7]
b) Demonstrate the Lagrange’s equations of motion for MDOF systems by generating the
equations of motion for a Double Pendulum problem in terms of generalized displacements.
5 Determine the fundamental mode and fundamental frequency for the 3-DOF system shown in
Fig.4, using Stodola method. Take m = 2.0x105kN.sec2/m and k = 1x107kN/m. [14]
6 A simply supported beam of span 10m with uniform flexural rigidity of 5x104kN.m and mass per
unit length 10kN, is subjected to free vibrations. Determine the natural frequencies and the
corresponding mode shapes for the first three modes. [14]
7 The SDOF system shown in Fig.5, moves to the right by 1.0 mm when a push of 1200kN is
applied to the right at its free end. When the force is released on its return swing it deflects by
only 0.8mm. The amount of time taken to complete one cycle of motion is 0.10 seconds.
Determine the mass, damping, stiffness, natural frequency and damped frequency for the system.
Also determine the amplitude of vibration after 10 cycles are completed from the time of release.
[14]
8 a) Prove that mode shape matrix is orthogonal with respect to both mass matrix and stiffness
matrix for MDOF systems. [7+7]
b) What is meant by uncoupling equations of motion in MDOF systems? Briefly explain the
method of mode super position to obtain displacements for MDOF systems.
