MAT3701 - Linear Algebra III ASSIGNMENT 02

Due date: Friday, 16 August 2024

Instructions for the Assignment

(1) Carefully explain all your arguments.

(2) Only PDF files will be accepted.

(3) Late submissions will not be marked.

(4) Make sure your pdf document has your name, surname and student number on the first page.

Question 1

Let T be a linear operator on an inner product space V , and suppose that ||T (x)|| = ||x|| for all x ∈ V.
Prove that T is one to one.

Question 2

Let V = R2 , and let ||(a, b)|| = max{|a|, |b|}, for (a, b) ∈ V. Prove that || · || as defined here is a norm on V.

Question 3

Let V be an inner product space, S and S0 be subsets of V , and W be a finite dimensional subspace of V .
Prove the following:

(3.1) If S0 ⊆ S then S ⊥ ⊆ S0⊥ .

(3.2) S ⊆ (S ⊥ )⊥ , so span(S) ⊆ (S ⊥ )⊥ .

(3.3) W = (W ⊥ )⊥ . Hint: Use exercise 6, section 6.2 of Friedberg, 4th Edition.

Question 4

Let F : R3 → R3 be defined as

F (x, y, z) = (3x + 4y − 5z, 2x − 6y + 7z, 5x − 9y + z).

Find the adjoint of F .

Question 5

Let V be a finite dimensional inner product space and let T be a linear operator on V. Prove that R(T ∗ ) = N(T )⊥ .
Hint: Prove that R(T ∗ )⊥ = N(T ), and then use (3.3) above.

Question 6

Let T be a normal operator on a finite dimensional inner product space V . Prove that:

(6.1) N(T ) = N(T ∗ ).

(6.2) R(T ) = R(T ∗ ).

Hint: Use Theorem 6.15 from Friedberg 4th Edition, and the result from the previous exercise.

Question 7

Let
1 i 1 i
A= and B= .
0 1 1 2+i
Determine whether A and B are normal.

Question 8

Let T be a normal operator. Prove the following:

(7.1) T (v) = 0 if and only if T ∗ (v) = 0.

(7.2) T − λI is normal, where λ is a scalar.

Question 9

Let
2 3 − 3i
A= .
3 + 3i 5
Find a unitary matrix P and a diagonal matrix D such that P ∗ AP = D.

Question 10

Let W be a finite dimensional subspace of an inner product space V . Show that if T is the orthogonal projection on W, then
I − T is the orthogonal projection on W ⊥ .
