IIUM ROBOTIC COMPETITION (IRC) 2024

RULES AND REGULATIONS:


AUTONOMOUS DRONE

REVISED 13 JUNE 2024

1. Objective
Autonomous Drone Challenge is a score-attack game in which a drone must complete
several obstacle courses autonomously in the minimal possible time. The drone must be
operated through a sequence of obstacles designed by the organizer and land safely in the
designated area.

2. Robot Specification
2.1. Robot must be operated autonomously. No external control (remote control) or external
intervention is allowed.
2.2. The size of the robot shall not exceed 350 mm (length) x 350 mm (width) x 250 mm
(height). No extension is allowed.
2.3. The weight of the robot including power sources and other parts of the robot shall not
exceed 1.5kg.
2.4. The robot can be programmed to fly accordingly.
2.5. The program can be implanted through a computer, laptop, Android, iPhone, or iPad
device.
2.6. Mission pads/ArUco markers are allowed to be used in this competition. However,
participants are required to bring their own accessories.

3. Game Field
3.1. Please refer to Appendix A and Appendix B for the game field and game objects.

3.2. The gates are made of PVC pipes and hula hoops. The Take OFF/Finish Area is made
of yellow tape.
4. Game Rules
4.1. One trial will have three (3) minutes.
4.2. One (1) minute is provided for setting of drone and placement of Mission pads/QR
codes/ArUco markers before the start of each match.
4.3. The drone shall be placed in the Take OFF/Finish Area.
4.4. Any team that fails to complete setting of drone in one minute shall be able to resume
the setting work once the trial time has begun.
4.5. All teams shall complete the tasks in the following order:
a. The task of drone to take off.
b. The task of drone to fly through gate 1-5.
c. The task of drone to land properly in the Take OFF/Finish Area.
4.6. All teams are given unlimited attempts at retrying the gates/landing for each trial and
the best attempt will be taken as the final score.
4.7. The points will not be rewarded for an incomplete task.
4.8. Changes to the code are allowed after each attempt.
4.9. Winners are teams that could collect the highest point with the fastest time.
4.10. If no drones manage to complete the task or there is a draw, the winner will be decided
based on the fastest time.
4.11. The match may end in the following cases:
a. When the drone completed the tasks.
b. In the event of disqualification.
c. Referees decided that the continuity of the match is no longer possible.

5. Disqualifications
5.1. Flying out of bound. (including max ceiling heights).
5.2. Causing or attempting to damage the game field, the equipment on the field or the
opponent’s robot.
5.3. Performing any act against the spirit of fair play and friendship between participating
teams.
5.4. The team that does not follow the instruction or warning of the referee.

6. Others
6.1. In the event of a mid-air collision and missed tasks, the team must ask the referee for
permission to enter the game field and resume the race if they are able to take off.
6.2. The teams are responsible for operating and maintaining their robot and equipment.
6.3. The organizers are not responsible for damage to or loss of drone(s) and associated
equipment during the competition.
6.4. For any dispute not specified in the rules, referees are given full authority to make a
decision and their decision is final.
6.5. All teams are encouraged to decorate the robot to reflect the culture, aesthetics and
styles of their respective educational institute or country.
6.6. When designing the robot, the teams must take into account that there will be some
uncontrolled environmental parameters that might affect the robot’s behavior.
