Problems for Lecture 19

1. IIT Guwahati student gymkhana arranged a round-robin badminton tournament among 1st year
students. To make sure each participating student keep track of games and know other participants
by name, they put a bizarre rule that after all the games are over, each student will list the name of
opponents they have defeated or the names of those defeated by someone he/she defeated. Show
that there is at least one student who listed the names of all other participants.

2. A standard checkerboard is a rectangle divided into 8 rows and 8 columns with 64 equal size
squares as shown in the figure below. If one or more of the squares is removed, we call it a board. A
domino is a rectangular piece equivalent to 1 by 2 matrix or 2 by 1 matrix.

A tiling of a checkerboard or a board means when its squares are covered with dominos in such a
manner that no dominos are overlapping and no dominos overhanging the board.

Solve the following problems:

a) Determine whether it is feasible to tile a board obtained by removing one of the four corner
squares of a standard checkerboard.

b) Determine whether it is feasible to tile a board obtained by removing the upper right and lower
left corner squares of a standard checkerboard.

c) Determine whether it is feasible to tile a board obtained by removing the marked (grey color)
squares in the above figure.
