Instructions (Part 1 Domain Analysis Chart): When introducing the Multi-Modal Literacy Narrative project, we established that your mind is influenced by different cultural/social systems that work both separately and together to shape your ideas, beliefs, and practices as a reader and writer. To analyze these systems, your first task is to complete the domain analysis chart in which you must reflect on each of the four domains listed below and identify as many practices, ideas/values/beliefs, objects, or significant details from each cultural/social system that you think has influenced your literacy and composition skills.
Home Immediate Family: Mother, Father, and one sister Middle class family: Father operated with hospital instruments, and Mother was a tech operator of Mallinckrodt (aka Covidien) Mother spoke baby talk to me. Meanwhile, my Father used moderate vocabulary. Mother and Fathers highest level of education was from high school, but had a strong belief that education and literacy was the key to success throughout life Father would give some articles from newspapers to read and tell him what I read about. Father would show me some of his essays he wrote high school. Although my mother and father was not into that much reading and writing, Father would tell real life lessons from his learning experiences as to why literacy was important to him. Completed crossword puzzles. Sister, Father, and I played board games from the instructions. Mother and Father used some forms of Southern accents. (yall, fixen, oyl) Childhood home consisted of lots of art, from

Neighborhood / Community / Peers Childhood Adolescence: Lived in Youngsville, North Carolina Not that many kids in my neighborhood to socialize about literacy. Raised up in a mostly black neighborhood until the construction of houses appeared in 2009. Heard a lot of distracting noises throughout my neighborhood (music blasting from cars, barking, and lots of cars). Graffiti on the roads. Lots of posted yard sales from power line poles around the neighborhood. If there were kids around they did not talk about school, therefore, was not concern about literacy. Pick up lots of littered garbage disposal on the sides of roads. Adulthood: Charlotte, N.C. The college people were very literate about their values, opinions, and beliefs. education. College roommates do not seem that concern on literacy but more on parties, and having fun. Sometimes, they motivated me to have some fun. College roommates may have thought I was an outsider, always pertaining to my studies, therefore, would not talk that much to me. BEST (Building Education Strengths and Talents) was very dedicated to having literacy, and pushing our strengths over the limit. People in college were very caring to literacy; therefore, made me even more encouraged in learning. Many people are spiritual in the literacy that they present events to express their opinions to other people.

Instructions (Part 2 Domain Analysis Narrative): Now that you have completed the chart and generated some ideas about the cultural/social systems you engage with, it is time to flesh out those ideas, and analyze/explain how you think each domain has influenced your literacy and composition. For each of the systems listed below, write between 75 and 100 words to explain the major details of each cultural/social system and how the qualities of each system have influenced your literacy and composition (this means you will compose four short analyses total). You may complete your essays below. Simply type your essay next to each of the headers.
1. Home: Home has influenced me in my literacy in many ways. From my fathers words how valuable literacy was important it has forced me to continue to read. Writing journals on my life at home has helped me to include anecdotes in my writings. Reading different material, I was able to incorporate some information from different texts, or using my own knowledge into my own writing. Demonstrations from mother and father, made me able to create ideas from prompts or visualize how I could write thing out to make the paper understandable. Playing board games like SCRAMBLE for vocabulary.
2. Work: Talking to many people and children from my volunteering, it has affected me to write in many different tones in my writings. These tones in my writings could address to people how I feel about my thoughts and ideas of a specific topic. Following procedures from books, and reading up on signs from my volunteer service has allowed me to stay focus to what prompts address me to write about, without getting off topic. Reading aloud to another kid, has allowed me grasp a better understanding to what the text is asking me.
3. School: Being able to pronounce letters from pre-school to elementary school it has affected me to read a loud any words from a book. Having a teacher to show good, bad and ugly essays has motivated me to write better as a writer, by writing sentences to support my ideas without any grammatical errors. Participating in spelling bees in elementary school has made me able to write uncommon words based on the pronunciation and write new words. Being in mock interviews has made me to communicate better in writing so people can get an understanding.

4. Neighborhood / Community / Peers: When living in my neighborhood at the time, there was not that many kids, therefore, when I wrote essays I was not able to give that much thought in details. Hearing many distractions has caused me to lose focus to my understanding of reading. Kids like some in college have influenced me to not read a lot. I being in my room a lot have caused me to think a lot in my writings; to take time to think, until I grasp an idea. With spiritual people around the college it has motivated me to be creative in my writings.
