CONVERSATION

Dafne: Hey guys, it’s nice to see you after the holidays. I hear some things about their trips, so…
Frank, tell me, I heard you were last year in Germany, did you do an extreme sport in that country
during the vacations?

Frank: Yes, I have been in Germany last year to do ski. With two friends we decided to go skiing.
Nobody of us were used to skiing in the mountains of Germany. It was the first time. My mother says
that I am a “thrill seeker”.
It was exactly on 2nd February 2023. The weather on that day was perfect for skiing. There was a lot
of snow, cold and freezing, but it was sunny, which is very important for skiing. I wouldn't ski if there
were a lot of fog because it can be dangerous for the visibility during skiing. I was well-prepared: I
had worn thermal underwear, a really warm jacket, ski goggles and ski helmet. We also took all
necessary precautions, for example we took bandages and a first-aid kit.

Dafne: I can see, you’re a thrill seeker, that is clear. Wherever you go, you try to live crazy and
exciting experiences, so, it makes you a potential thrill seeker. And thermal underwear is really
important, you need to feel warm to do this sport in that weather. I used to hear that the snowdrift in
winter in Germany was terrible because the snow accumulates quickly on the street, but I’m happy for
you, you took all the necessary precautions to take care of yourself. What about you, Mayra, last
thing I’ve heard of you was about you went to Colorado, what did you do during the holidays?

Mayra: Well, what I did was also exciting like what Frank did! And yes, last month I went to
Colorado to do snowboarding with my boyfriend, and we had a good time there. We were both
experienced snowboarders and we chose that extreme sport because it filled us with thrill and
adventure. I don't care about the risks, but obviously we packed a first-aid kit just in case of an
emergency and we put on thermal underwear to stay warm, we take all the precautions.

Dafne: That was interesting Mayra, It seems you and your boyfriend had a nice vacation. Did you
have an inconvenience in Colorado or was everything okay?
Mayra: Well, As the day went on, the sky darkened. Unfortunately a storm rolled in, bringing heavy
snowstorm, we got into trouble because our visibility dropped and we were unable to see more than a
few feet ahead.
Carefully, We decided to seek shelter in a nearby cabin. And remembered the importance of always
staying warm. Luckily, we had found two very good souls who shared stories by the fireplace with us.

DAFNE: I’m sorry to hear that, but yes in those places it’s common to see a snowfall or snowstorm so
you had to be prepared. What about the last storm?

Mayra: The storm lasted for hours. When it finally cleared, Rafael, my boyfriend, used his phone to
call for help. The ski patrol arrived immediately, guiding them back to safety.
As they sipped hot cocoa in the lodge, I remember saying“This was an adventure we’ll always
remember.” And he replied, “Absolutely! We’ve never experienced anything like it.”

Dafne: I feel calm to know that you and he were okay in that situation, and that adventure made you
feel more courageous.
Mayra: Yes, definitely, we're courageous and I'm waiting for the next holiday to go again. But now
tell me Frank, Did you collect some information about skiing before you went to the mountains in
Germany?

Frank: Before we went to the mountains, we were reading a lot of instructions about skiing. Skiing is
not easy. Body balance is important in this sport. When you have skis on your feet, you can't move
free. In my first hour, whenever I started skiing, I fell to the ground. After two hours, I was getting
used to skiing and to having more control in the movements of my legs. The next hours were easier -
skiing was more successful and I enjoyed it.

Dafne: It sounds really difficult, body balance is extremely serious, and you need to think in all your
movements to keep a correct position. In my case, in the last months I’ve gotten used to starting to do
exercises, and to do stretching it’s necessary to coordinate all your body movements… in simple
words: I need to continue practicing myself and enjoying the exercise routine. I wonder if you could
give me some advice before doing these sports, please.

Frank: This first-time skiing was for me a very extreme activity because accidents often happen
during skiing, especially when the people don’t have experience in this sport. Fortunately, nothing
happened to us. Many people take for the first time an experienced ski instructor. I think it is a good
idea because with an instructor you can know all risks and then you are careful. So, don’t put your life
in danger. My advice for you is to take a ski instructor for the first time you want to ski.

Mayra: Yes, and my advice would be to always make friends in the place you are, try to tell them
where you are and also have your cell phone and give them a call in case an emergency happens. Its
important to keep calm in case you suffer some kind of emergency or trouble.

Dafne: Thanks for your advice you both, that 's true. Some people don’t take care before doing this
type of extreme sport. Honestly, I’m like you, Frank, I like to take my precautions before doing
anything, because I don’t like to take risks. I will try these sports, it’s time to make an appointment at
Everest and Colorado haha.
