Hang Kia and Pa Co are two communes of Mai Chau District, located
between the ranges of Xa Linh and Luong Xa Mountains. Surrounded by
the rocky walls, they are covered in the mist all year round. To get to Pa
Co commune, you need to travel 30 kilometers from Mai Chau Town,
crossing the 1200 meter high mountain above sea level. Travel for
another 10 kilometers before you reach Hang Kia. Your eyes will be
filled with the immense greenery of the mountains, adorned with the
Mong people’s houses dimly looming in the thin veil of mist. There’s
hardly anything as evocative as the scenery here: the small winding
roads with steep bends, the lush green tea hills, the stone fenced little
garden in the front porch, the pile of firewood stacked in the middle of
the yard, harmonizing with the color of the smoky kitchen roof.
Hang Kia and Pa Co are intact with the unspoiled beauty of the
mountains and forests. Tea hills and plum gardens are found everywhere
in Ta Xong A, Thung A Lang… downwards. Moving upwards, you will
find Gate of Heaven, Pa Khom on the way to Thung Mai and Sam Tha
Mountain. If it were not for the thick layers of the clouds, you would be
able to view the peak of Pu Luong (Thanh Hoa) or Pha Luong (Son La)
as far as the eye could reach.
Along the way, if you drop by the village, you will occasionally meet the
Mong women (Mong people account for about 90% of the population
here), who are diligently embroidering, surrounded by mischievous
children. Some of the traditional handicrafts by local ethnic people that
can be named are brocade weaving, indigo dyeing, beeswax painting…
If you can make time for a longer stay, you will be introduced to many
local specialties imbued with mountain flavors such as “Mèo” mustard
greens, bamboo shoots, and “mắc khén”...
