PHASE CONSTANT

• The phase constant φ. It can be chosen so that the function

give some other displacement
• The wave function:𝑦 = 𝑦𝑚 sin(𝑘𝑥 − 𝑤𝑡 + 𝜑)

9
WAVE PROPERTIES

• Amplitude: ym
• Wavelength: λ
• Angular wave number: k
• Period :T
• Frequency :f
• Angular frequency: ω
• Speed: v

10
THE SPEED OF TRAVELING WAVE

• Consider a sinusoidal wave,

travelling with a speed v, having a
constant shape.
• The wave is travelling in the
direction of increasing x ( to the
right)
• As the wave moves, each point of
the moving wave retains its
displacement (y)
11
THE SPEED OF TRAVELING WAVE

𝜔 𝜆
• 𝑣= = = 𝜆. 𝑓
𝑘 𝑇
𝑚
• The SI unit of speed is
𝑠

a) What is the amplitude of this wave?

b) What are the wavelength, period, and frequency of this
wave?
c) What is the velocity of this wave?

QUESTION 2

A water wave makes 2400 ripples per minute, the distance between five
crests is 80 cm.
a) The wave is mechanical wave. Why?
b) Find the frequency and the period
c) Find the speed of this wave
d) Calculate the distance covered by the wave during 20 sec
e) Calculate the time taken by the wave to cover 200m
f) Find the distance between 4 consecutive crests
g) Find the distance between the second and the eight crest
h) Find the number of ripples during two minutes. 16
POINTS VIBRATING IN PHASE

• when BF=n 𝜆
Where n is a natural whole number.
Then points B and F are vibrating in
phase.
• yB = yF = ym then B and F are crests
• yD = yH = -ym then D and H are troughs

17
POINTS VIBRATING OUT OF PHASE

𝜆
• When AC=(2n+1)
2
Where n is a natural whole number.
Then A and C are vibrating in
antiphase.
Which means :
yB=y then yD= -y
yD=-y then yF=y
