1. Tom avoids going to popular holiday destinations, which always tend to be swarming with tourists. He
prefers to visit places which are off the beaten track.
2. I’m not really interested in going to museums and seeing the sights. I just want to get away from
everything, relax, and recharge my batteries before going back to work in September.
3. When John was a student he always used to travel on a shoestring budget. He normally got around by
hitch-hiking and usually stayed at camping sites. Sometimes he even slept rough under the stars.
4. We’ve seen all the places of interest mentioned in the guidebook, so let’s just go for a stroll. We could
wander around the shopping area if you like. What do you think?
5. They set off bright and early because it was going to be a long climb to the top of Snowdon. They

3. Unemployment has fallen but the gap between rich and poor has widened considerably. There have
been strikes and demonstrations all over the country to protest against the government's economic
policy.
4. In a welfare state people pay taxes on their income and receive public services such as healthcare in
return. Sometimes governments subsidize public and private institutions to stimulate economic
growth and to promote activities which are in the public good.
5. Tom comes from a very privileged background. His parents were very wealthy and, as a result, he

park.
