1.0 Introduction
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme is a skill development program designed to
prepare students of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education for transition from the
college environment to work. It is a program in which students participate in work activities while
attending school. This work experience program gives students the opportunity to be part of an
SIWES is a cooperative industrial internship program that involves institutions of higher learning,
Universities Commission (NUC) and NBTE/NCCE in Nigeria, It was established in 1971 but
commenced in 1973 after a joint research with the aim of making education more relevant and to
bridge the yawning gap between the theory and practice of engineering, technology, and science-
related disciplines and to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical skills in preparation for
It is obvious that the scheme is making a great impact on the economic and technological
development of the country on the human resource development. Some of the contributions of the
scheme are:
1
● Offering an opportunity for students to interact with workers of various levels in the
industries.
● Practical industrial experience which forms part of the assessment of the award
● To provide student with the practical management of the construction industries and
establishment.
● To provide an avenue for students in tertiary institutions to acquire industrial skills and
● To expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery
● To make the transition from the university to the field where work is carried out and thus
● To provide students with the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real
working conditions, thereby bridging the gap between lecture rooms and the actual site of
practice.
2
● Exposing students to different categories and class of people to improve their people skills,
interactional abilities and team spirit and enhance their abilities to build positive working
● To boost students interest and morals in their respective discipline and thereby evolving
their performance.

3.1 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IDEAS AND DRAFTING SKILLS
During my Industrial Training session, I was exposed to series of Architectural design ideas which
process follows a schematic phase structure which includes conceptual design and architectural
detail drawing, an idea that takes the parts of a structure and turns them into a whole system
achieved by objectives and limitations. Through architecture and design, critical value is added to
projects that results to the built environment in Nigeria, Africa and the rest of the world.
I also participated in series of architectural drafting which helped improve my drafting and
modelling skills and techniques using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software like AutoCAD

TWO BEDROOM PORTAL CABIN APARTMENT
As part of the wealth of knowledge added to my experience during my Industrial Training session,
I was assigned to supervise a construction site where portable, demountable and transportable
buildings otherwise known as Portal Cabins where constructed. During my supervision period I
got to know the various processes involved in the construction of portal cabins which I was
oblivious of in the past. I also got to know the different materials used in the process of the
construction and had the opportunity to interact and relate with the various artisans on site.
CONSTRUCTION INCLUDES:
● WELDING
● TIMBER CUTTING
● ROOFING

WELDING
Welding is a process that is used to join metal to metal by using electricity to create enough heat
to melt metal, and the melted metals when cool result in a binding of the metals.
This is a process whereby steel and timber panels are been cut into different sizes. Electrically

3.3 INTERIOR DESIGN AND DECORATION/EXECUTION
One of the interesting aspect of my Industrial training session was Architectural Interior
design which is a process through which the interiors of buildings are designed, concerned

I learnt that there are various paths that one can take to become a professional interior designer.
All of these paths involve some form of training with a professional designer. Interior design
implies that there is more of an emphasis on planning, functional design and the effective use
Also, I acquired that interior decoration involves the arrangement of components and

building as well as projects that require an understanding of technical issues such as window

they are built. It encompasses everything from basic sketches to more sophisticated 3D renderings

I learnt how to generate 3D drawings from 2D drawings which is mapped with the greatest of
precision and attention that allows the presentation of drawings in an incredibly detailed and
unique way.

3.5 REMODELLING, ALTERATION AND RETROFITS
Part of the knowledge I obtain during this quest is remodeling and alteration of buildings where
we updated existing buildings and transformed them to a new condition which encompassed
changes and rearrangement of structural parts, elements, and walls. Normal maintenance,
reroofing, painting or wallpapering, or changes to mechanical and electrical systems are not
Projects that increase, expand, or extend a facility’s gross floor area or height of a facility are
considered alterations and must comply with the requirements of the standards applicable to new
construction. Existing elements and spaces affected by an addition are treated as alterations and
qualify for certain allowances or exceptions that are not permitted in new construction.
Combination of the two is considered to be a renovation, however the design of whatever addition
you do can be a difficult process. Because there is already an existing building, whatever you do
must complement what is there. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to imitate the design of
the existing building, but any new addition needs to be professional.

Every new furniture design starts with a basic concept, or idea. In furniture design drawings are
created from various ideas using traditional and modern methods. Computer software can then be
used to create a more intricate and detailed design. Furniture can be a product of design and is
14
During my quest, I learnt Furniture design which refers to designing movable objects intended
to support various human activities such as seating (e.g., chairs, stools, and sofas), eating (tables),
and sleeping (e.g., beds). Furniture is also used to hold objects at a convenient height for work (as
horizontal surfaces above the ground, such as tables and desks), or to store things (e.g., cupboards
and shelves). Furniture design is a specialized field where function and fashion collide.
Furniture is one of the most important aspects of an interior space. Pieces of furniture not only
add function and practicality to a space, but they also add style and personality. A furniture
designer is a professional that designs and creates different types of furniture. Each piece of
furniture that is created must serve a few different purposes and must be functional, practical,
comfortable, and attractive. Most furniture is made from a combination of wood and metal.
Furniture detailing has to do with providing all the necessary information needed to create a
custom piece of furniture component. This is where dimensioning, labelling and specification
comes to use. Furniture can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood.
I also witnessed Furniture fabrication which comes after design and detailing which is the

In my Industrial Training process, I was taught that Procurement is the act of finding,
The economic cost of building materials is what governs decision making about what materials to
use. Sometimes people take into consideration the high quality and durability of the materials.

CHAPTER FOUR
Time has been a quite challenging factor throughout my Industrial Training session.

Meeting up with submission deadlines was a herculean task as standards of excellence guiding
the firm must be maintained. As one still learning the profession, it took a lot out me, taught me

Adapting to the use of the sketch up software for modeling 3D drawings as regarding the tools,
commands and their application was far from the conventional AutoCAD software which I was
proficient in. It was a major challenge I faced as I had to learn and at the same time use it to carry
