Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the Technology and Livelihood Education 9 Project CAP-LRE Alternative
Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Industrial Arts – Electrical Installation Maintenance - Carry
out Measurements and Calculations .
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from public
institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator, in helping the learners meet the standards
set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the
needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the module:

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also
need to keep track of the learners’ progress while allowing them to manage their own learning.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks
included in the module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the Technology and Livelihood Education 9 Project CAP-LRE Alternative

What is It

SYSTEM OF MEASUREMENT

• is a set of units which can be used to specify anything that can be measured.

Common units of measurement used in making layout and installation of

electrical materials:

A. Linear measures
1. English system provides the creative way on how people can measure by
themselves. For example, people measure shorter distance on the ground with
their feet. They measure long distances by their palms which is equal to a
yard.

• Inch
• Yard
• Miles

2. Metric system is a decimalized system of measurement. It exists in several

variations with different choices of base units. Metric units are widely used
around the world for personal, commercial and scientific purpose.
• Millimetre
• Centimetre
• Decimetre
• Metre

B. English units and each equivalent

• 12 inches = foot(ft)
• 1 foot = 3 yard (yd)
• 1 yard = 36 inches

C. Metric units and each equivalent

• 10millimetre (mm) = 1centimetre (cm)
• 10centimetre = 1decimetre(dm)
• 10 decimetre = 1metre

D. English to metric equivalent

• 1 inch = 2.54 cm
• 1 foot = 30.48 cm
• 1 yard = 91.44 cm

6
E. The centimetre graduation

1
.5mm mm 10 mm 25 mm or 2.5 cm

The graduation shows that every digit is .5mm

https://gltnhs-tle.weebly.com/uploads/9/6/1/1/96118694/sdaacacx-orig_orig.png

Note: A mark used to indicate points on a visual scale is commonly termed as

graduation. A linear graduation of a scale occurs on a linear measuring device,
(e.g. a rule or measuring tape using units such as inches or millimetres)

How to read the cm graduation:

1. First graduation is .5 mm
2. Second graduation is 1mm
3. Third graduation is 1.5mm
4. Fourth graduation is 2mm

Inch

How to read the inch graduation:

1. First graduation is 1/16
2. Second graduation is 1/8
3. Third graduation is 3/16
4. Fourth graduation is 1/4, then follow the given scale above.

7
The inch graduation in a steel rule:

THE MULTITESTER

• Multimeter or a multitester, also known as a VOM (volt-ohm-milliammeter).

• It is an electronic measuring instrument that combines several measurement

functions in one unit.

• A typical multimeter can measure the following:

✓ voltage (V)
✓ current (I)
✓ resistance (R) Ω

• Two types of multimeter:

✓ analog- use a microammeter with a moving pointer to display readings

✓ digital- it has LCD to display measurement readings.

Analog Digital

8
PARTS OF A MULTITESTER

SCALE- has a set of numerical markings used to read the measured value of quantity.

The upper scale is for measuring

resistance

and

the lower scale is for measuring

voltage and current

shorturl.at/hrGI5

POINTER – It is a needle-shaped rod that moves

over the scale of a meter. This indicates the
measured value of electrical quantity.

shorturl.at/bdAJ6

RANGE SELECTOR KNOB - A selector switch that allows you to choose different functions
and range of the meter.

shorturl.at/byCY1 shorturl.at/bdAJ6

TEST PROBE - It is the input part of the multimeter.

Red probe for positive and black probe for negative
or common.(refer to the link for the actual photo)

shorturl.at/dtKZ1

9
ZERO OHM ADJUSTER - A part of the multimeter
where it is adjusted point zero beforenmeasuring
resistance.

shorturl.at/egqKY

A. Proper care and maintenance of the multitester

1. Read manual of instructions on how to operate the multi-tester.

2. In reading the amount of voltage, always start with the highest range to avoid reading
voltage higher than the tester setting.

3. Be sure that the tester is set to the correct range setting: resistance range when
measuring the ohm, voltage range when measuring voltage and ammeter range
when measuring the value of electric current.

4. Always check the condition of its battery. Worn out batteries will damage the internal
setting of the tester.

5. When the tester is not in used or will be stored, set the selector switch to 1000V or to
OFF position.

6. Never drop the tester.

to 12 Basic Education Curriculum Technology and Livelihood Education Learning Module
(Exploratory Course for Grade 7 & 8). Department of Education, pages 57-73.

10
B. How to read the resistance range of the multitester? Use the given table below.

The unit of measurement to be used to determine its resistance is ohm (Ω)

shorturl.at/hiBTZ

Example 1:

Pointer: 8.5
Range setting: X10K

*Multiply the given to range setting

10
x 8.5
=85 ohms/ Ω

Reading is 85ohms

Note: Each scale has a value of 1 ohm. Therefore 1 ohm multiplied by 10 scales is equal to
10 ohms. Adding all the value from zero, we get a total of 20 ohms. 20–30 — is divided by
5 scales.

11
Example 2:

Pointer: 34
Range setting: X1

Reading is 34 ohms/Ω

Voltage scale

Range Value/div
Range 10V 0.2V
Range 50V 1V
Range 250V 5V
Range 100V 20V

This is the voltage scale

Range 10V, 50V, 250V

Example 1:

Voltage scale
Range setting is 10 V
(used 0-10 scale)

Reading is 6.4V

Example 2:

Voltage scale
Range setting is 50 V
(used 0-10 scale)

Reading is 2.3V
12
Example 3:

Voltage scale
Range setting is 250 V
(used 0-250 scale)

Reading is 8.5V
