 This international code or standard was developed under procedures


accredited as meeting the criteria for American National Standards and it is an
American National Standard. The Standards Committee that approved the
code or standard was balanced to assure that individuals from competent and
concerned interests have had an opportunity to participate. The proposed code
or standard was made available for public review and comment that provides
an opportunity for additional public input from industry, academia, regulatory
agencies, and the public-at-large.

 ASME does not “approve,” “rate,” or “endorse” any item, construction,


proprietary device, or activity.

 ASME does not take any position with respect to the validity of any patent
rights asserted in connection with any items mentioned in this document, and
does not undertake to insure anyone utilizing a standard against liability for
infringement of any applicable letters patent, nor assume any such liability.
Users of a code or standard are expressly advised that determination of the

Revision to the code

Addenda :
 Started ASME in 2011 will no longer issue addenda (the latest addenda is
2011). The next edition of the Code will be issued in 2013 and then issued
every 2 years
 Become mandatory 6 months after issuance.

Special Notice:
 may be posted on the ASME Web site prior to issuance of edition
 It is an approved revisions to Code requirements
 Such revisions may be used on the date posted and will become
mandatory 6 months after the date of issuance in the next edition
 may also include a revision to a Code Case

Interpretations :
 Issued by ASME as written reply to inquiries concerning interpretation
 Posted in ASME web site semiannually (January and July)

Revision to the code

Errata :
 Correction to the code ie. Printer or typographical error
 may be posted on the ASME Web site

Code Cases :
 Alternative or New rules to the code
 Only applicable to the code specified

 The National Board

 NB of Boiler and P/V Inspectors is organization made


up of the official charged with enforcement of Boiler
and P/V law within a jurisdiction in the US or Province
in Canada.

Authorized Inspection Agency


(AIA)
 An Authorized Inspection Agency is an organization
meeting the criteria of this Standard that is accredited
by the Society to provide Authorized Inspection
Agency services within a jurisdiction.
 Such agencies employ Authorized Inspectors and
Inspector Supervisors that meet the criteria of this
Standard and of the National Board Rules for
Commissioned Inspectors.

Authorized Inspection Agency
(AIA)
shall be one of the following
 a jurisdiction that accepts and does administer one or more
construction code sections of the ASME Boiler and Pressure
Vessel Code as a means to satisfy legal or regulatory
requirements
 An insurance company authorized to write boiler and
P/V insurance within a particular jurisdiction
 a company in the business of providing “third party”
inspection services within a jurisdiction, which has
government recognition to perform inspection and
design reviews for boilers and pressure vessels.

 Duties of AIA
 Participate in joint review
 Provide qualified Inspectors to monitor construction in
accordance with the ASME Code.
 Employ AI supervisor to monitor the activities of
inspector and audit the activities of the shop
 Provide all AI with their supervisor contact number
 Provide written instruction to AI to contact their
supervisor if code problem cannot resolved or when new
code requirements may affect them.

THE AUTHORIZED INSPECTOR
 Qualifications
 Inspectors shall comply with the National Board “Rules for Qualified Inspectors,” and
hold a a valid National Board Commission with an “A” endorsement. An applicant for
designation as an Inspector shall have the characteristics defined below:
a) Demonstrated ability to perform shop and field inspections and other inspection
activities in accordance with the ASME Code to the satisfaction of the Organization
employing him.
b) Satisfactory degree of expertise, experience, and background knowledge for the
inspection of pressure equipment according to the complexity of the assignment.
c) Knowledge of applicable Sections of the ASME Code, Addenda, and Code Cases.
d) Knowledge of Quality Control Systems, programs, and shop and field procedures.
e) Knowledge and ability to evaluate and monitor shop and field procedures and
performance.
f) Knowledge of the requirements for maintenance and retention of records.
g) passing grade on an examination administered by the National Board,

THE AUTHORIZED INSPECTOR SUPERVISOR


 Qualification

 shall be qualified as an Inspector and shall have the additional


qualifications specified
 have passed an examination developed, promulgated, and administered by
the National Board and received a “B” endorsement from the National
Board.
 have qualified as an Inspector and subsequently shall have been engaged
for at least two years in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code related work
s.
 have knowledge of ASME shop review procedures, which shall include
service with at least three shop review teams as a member or as an observer.
 shall have knowledge of The requirements of applicable ASME Code
Sections.
