ANGLING
Angling is a method of fishing that involves using a fishing rod, reel, and line to catch fish. It is a
popular and traditional form of recreational fishing. Angling can be done in freshwater or saltwater,
and it's a widely practiced hobby in The Bahamas
1.Equipment Preparation
They use a fishing rod that's like their secret weapon. The rod's size and shape depend on the type of
fish they want to catch. Attached to the rod is a fishing line, made from special materials. The line's
strength and thickness change depending on the kind of fish they're after.
At the end of the line, there's a hook and these hooks come in all sorts of sizes and looks. They pick
the hook based on what they want to catch and what bait they're using.
Speaking of bait, there are a lot of choices. They can go for live or dead fish, pieces of conch, squid,
shrimp, or even use fake lures.
Anglers typically use a fishing rod, which can vary in length and design, depending on the type of
fish they are catching. Attached to the fishing rod is a fishing line, which is usually made of
monofilament or braided material. The line's strength and thickness often depend on the target fish
species. At the end of the fishing line, a hook is attached. Hooks come in various sizes and styles,
each suited for different types of bait and fish. Anglers often choose bait based on the fish they want
to catch; common baits include live or dead fish, pieces of conch, squid, pilchards, chum, shrimp and
artificial lures.

A wide variety of fish can be caught using the line and hook these include yellowtail snapper, mutton
snapper, grouper, jack, bonefish and grunt. It is very important to handle the caught fish with care to
minimize stress and prevent injury. Proper catch-and-release techniques are often followed. The hook
and line fishing method is widely practiced in The Bahamas. It offers a more hands-on and personal
fishing experience, making it a popular choice for anglers..
TRAPPING
Trapping is a traditional fishing method that is widely practiced throughout The Bahamas.
1.Equipment Preparation
The fishing traps are like fish-catching tools that fishermen make to catch fish easily. Fishermen use
materials like wood, chicken wire, mesh, or things they find in their surroundings to make these
traps. They want them to work well but also be nice to the environment. Source C shows an example
of a wooden trap. These traps are cleverly designed with special entrances to guide the fish into the
trap so they can catch them without much trouble.
2.Trapping Methods/Techniques
Traps are strategically placed in areas of the sea where fish are known to swim.Depending on the
type of trap, bait or a lure might be used to attract fish into the trap.Common baits include small fish,
insects, conch or other organic matter that fish find appealing.Fishermen regularly check the traps to
see if they have captured any fish. Traps need to be inspected and maintained to ensure they are in
good working condition.Once fish are captured in the trap, fishermen retrieve them by either lifting
the entire trap or reaching in to collect the catch. The fish are then transferred to a holding container
or fishing vessel.Fishermen may selectively choose which fish to keep based on species, size, and
maturity. This helps in adhering to local fishing regulations and ensuring the sustainability of fish
populations.
Using special traps is a cool way to catch all kinds of ocean creatures like crawfish, crabs, lobsters,
and mollusks. Sometimes, even little fish can get caught. People really like using traps to fish because
it's like a hands-on adventure in the ocean. These traps are awesome because they're super good at
targeting specific sea creatures. It's like choosing exactly what you want to catch.
TROLLING
According to seafish.org trolling is a method of fishing where the boat tows a line or lines with one or
more hooks with a natural bait to target fish swimming in the upper layers of the water.
1.Equipment Preparation
When fishing using the trolling method certain equipment is needed such as trolling rods and reels.
Reels are normally large to handle the bigger fish. Lines are usually durable and heavy to withstand
the tension created while trolling. Different artificial lures or live bait fish can be used to attract
different species of fish while trolling.
According to source D, taken from the Geography Principles for CXC, Trolling is a method that is
sometimes used for fishing or larger pelagic fish such as tuna. It involves towing lines behind a boat
moving at a moderate speed. Very often no bait is used in trolling, the hooks at the end of the lines
being fastened to a plastic or metal lure. The lure is agitated by the water flow, and it is this
movement and reflection of light from the lure that attracts the fish to the hooks. There are two types
of trolling. Top Water Trolling, with this type of trolling the lures stay on the water surface, attracting
fish that are closer to the top. On the other hand, Deep water trolling involves using heavy sinkers to
reach greater depths where fish could possibly be located.
Trolling is usually used to catch pelagic fish which are fish that inhabit open oceans.Pelagic
fish are not near the bottom or the shore. Examples of Pelagic fish caught by trolling are
black-fin tuna, mackerel and redfish.
Conclusion
In concluding there are different ways people catch fish in The Bahamas, like using fishing rods
(that's angling), setting up traps, and trolling. Each way has its tools and tactics to catch the many
kinds of fish swimming around in our Bahamian waters. Fishing is a big deal in The Bahamas. It
helps lots of our people make money and have food to eat in our different communities. It's a super
important thing for our country.
