ABSTRACT

This study explores the potential of utilizing taro, as a source for biodegradable
plastic production. With the increasing environmental concerns associated with
conventional plastics, there is a growing demand for sustainable alternatives. Taro
possesses unique properties that make it a promising bioplastic production, including its
high starch content and abundance. This research investigates the feasibility of
extracting starch from taro tubers and converting it into biodegradable plastic through
various processing techniques such as extrusion and molding. The mechanical, thermal,
and biodegradation properties of taro-based bioplastic are evaluated to assess its
suitability for various applications.
This study utilized experimental and quantitative research design, Data were
collected to assess the efficiency of taro extract, and statistical analysis was performed
using Aspin Welch T-test. The research findings showed that Taro-based plastic presents
a promising avenue for reducing the environmental impact of traditional plastics. Its
commendable durability, strength, and flexibility make it a viable alternative material.
