SD 470 - Project2011

The document describes designing a single cell concrete box culvert that will be installed across a highway. It provides dimensions of the culvert and highway as well as material properties. It lists imposed load cases to consider and tasks to design the culvert for flexure, thrust, and shear when empty or full of water.

DEPARTMENT OF STRUCTURAL AND CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING

SD 470 PROJECT

DESIGN OF A SINGLE CELL CONCRETE BOX CULVERT

The above figure shows a box culvert which has to be installed across a highway of 6.00 m
carriage way width, and 1.50 m shoulders. The fill over the culvert top slab is 1.00 m.

Materials properties:
Density of embankment soil = 18 kN/m3, angle of repose 40o
Concrete grade = C35, grade 460 steel reinforcement, concrete cover = 40 mm.

Imposed loads:
Apply an appropriate HA loading as well as 37.5 HB units.

Tasks:
Design the box culvert with respect to:
- Flexural
- Thrust
- Shear
Design the culvert in the following steps;
1. When the top slab is loaded with dead and imposed loads, but the culvert is empty
2. When the top slab is loaded with dead and imposed loads, but the culvert is running full
3. When the vertical walls carry no live loads, but the culvert is running full
Provide reinforcement bars in both faces of the slabs and walls.
Perform detailing of your designed culvert
