CHAPTER - 9

A NIGHT TO FORGET

A. Answer these questions:

1. When Albert looked at himself in the mirror, what thoughts arose in

his mind?
A. When Albert looked at himself in the mirror, he thought that he looked
exactly like the character of a police constable which he was playing. It
would be really interesting and convincing if he goes out on streets and
act like a real policeman.
2.Did the early parts of the play go well? What supports your answer?
A. Yes, the early parts of the play went quite well. This was evident from the
thrilling response from the audience. hey were enjoying each and every
phrase and dialogue exchange and were very receptive, responsive and
appreciative.
3. ‘He could not do it’. Who could not do what? Why?
A. Albert could not do it. He suddenly started feeling panicky and could
sense an appalling attack of stage fright.
4. Where was the dressing room of the theatre (behind, below or above
the stage)? How can you tell?
A. The dressing room of the theatre was behind the stage. We can tell that
as the voices of the actors can be clearly heard.
5. Mrs. Bostock says that the prompter, Shirley, ‘hasn’t had a thing to do
so far’. What does this indicate?
A. The prompter, Shirley’s job was to prompt if any of the actors forgot
their dialogues. The above expression indicates that the actors have
delivered their lines perfectly and no one had forgotten anything.
6.’He realized to his own surprise that he was’. That he was what? Why
did that surprise him?
A. Albert realized that he is feeling alright and not feeling nervous any
more. Until that moment, he was gripped by stage fright and was feeling
very nervous. He was surprised to witness the sudden change in him.
7. How much of the story of the play can we make out from this text?
State briefly what can be made out?
A. We can make out some part of the story from the text.
There were two brothers on stage. One of them was good and the other
one seemed wayward. Both brothers did not like each other and the
younger one was giving information about the accident in which he was
involved. Apart from these two brothers there was a girl who was playing
the role of a maid.
8.The girl who was the maid…. Where was she the maid?
A. The girl who was the maid was standing by Albert’s side. She was going in
and out of the stage and performing her part very well
9.The two actors on stage did something by mistake. What did they do?
A. The two actors had skipped the pages of the script in which Albert had
his lines.
10. Did Albert go on stage that night? How can you tell?
A. No, Albert could not go on stage that night as the actors who were on
stage before him, skipped his part from the script.
