THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Read John 16:7-11

Question 1: What impact will the Holy Spirit have on the world?

"He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and

of judgment" (John 16:8).
To say that the Holy Spirit will expose the world regarding
sin, righteousness, and judgment means that he will bring
out into the open the true meaning of sin, righteousness,
and judgment, and hold the world accountable to those
standards. The Holy Spirit, like Jesus before him, speaks
openly and plainly, exposing, or bringing to the light, the
impact of Jesus’ ministry for the world.
Question 2: How will the Holy Spirit convict the world of sin,
righteousness and judgment?

Through Christians whom He will indwell, empower and

lead.
Question 3: Whatdid Jesus mean by convicting the
world "of sin, because they do not believe in Me"
(John 16:9)?
The Holy Spirit will lead Christians to preach Jesus' gift of
salvation, which delivers people from their sins. When
people reject that, they will be convicted of the "sin" of not
believing Jesus' sacrifice on the cross as He paid the
death penalty due for their sins, and therefore remain
guilty of them.
- sin is a broken relationship with God, refusal to believe
in Jesus, not a moral term (a laundry list of immoral
actions).
The world has difficulty accepting that they must be saved
through faith. Early in His earthly ministry, when speaking
to Nicodemus, Jesus made this plain. He (John 3:18) said:
He who believes in Him [Christ] is not judged; he who
does not believe has been judged already, because he
has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of
God.
Question 4: How about, "of righteousness, because I go to My Father
and you see Me no more" (John 16:10)?

When Jesus was on the earth, He was accused of being

many things, including a deceiver: "And there was much
murmuring among the people concerning Him. Some said,
“He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He
deceives the people” (John 7:12); a blasphemer.
When His resurrection and return to the "Father" (John
16:10) in heaven is preached, the world will be convicted
that His claim of being God was true and righteous.

The world assumes that Jesus’ death is defeat, but verse

10 states that the Holy Spirit reveals how Jesus’ death
demonstrates the “rightness” of God because his death
and departure are victory (16:33) and the completion of his
work

It was through Christ’s completed work of atonement that

His righteousness was made available to all believing
men. When we believe in Christ, we participate in His
righteousness. resurrection (Romans 1:4), the ascension
(Hebrews 9:14),

Question 5: And how about convicting the world "of judgment,

because the ruler of this world is judged" (John 16:11)?

But because Jesus crushed on the cross Satan's grip on

humanity's sin, Satan is judged as having been defeated,
and that news will also be preached by Christians led by
the Holy Spirit.
the Holy Spirit proves the world wrong about judgment by
exposing how in Jesus’ life and death, the ruler of the
world, the power of evil, is judged (12:31; 14:30). In Jesus’
life and death, evil is shown to be powerless before God.

At the cross (Colossians 2:15), the devil was judged and

defeated. Because the prince of the world, who is the
devil, has been judged, the Holy Spirit will speak
convincingly about judgment. Revelation 20:15

Question 6: Who is "the Spirit of truth"? (John 14:6)

Jesus said, "I am... the truth" , so the "Spirit of truth" is the
Spirit of Jesus Christ. He is also called the Holy Spirit, or
simply the "Spirit," as well as "Helper" above.
Question 7: What will the Spirit of truth tell the disciples?

What He hears from Jesus: "He will not speak on His own
authority, but whatever He hears He will speak... He will
take of what is Mine and declare it to you" (John 16:13-
14).
Question 8: What will Jesus tell the Spirit of truth?

What He hears from God the Father: "All things that the
Father has are Mine" (John 16:15 ). Therefore, there is
complete unity and consistency in the message from God
the Father, God the Son, and the Spirit of truth - i.e., God
the Holy Spirit.

Question 9: Whom will the Holy Spirit glorify?

He will glorify Jesus: "He will glorify Me" (John 16:14).

Question 10: Will Jesus glorify the Holy Spirit?

No, Jesus glorifies the Father, and the Father glories Jesus, but neither the
Father nor Jesus nor the Holy Spirit glorifies the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit
will never ever draw attention to Himself; He only promotes the glory of
Christ. The plan and scope of creation and redemption center upon Christ
as Creator, Savior, and LORD. Then the Holy Spirit brings Jesus' teachings
to us by the Bible and helps us understand it (John 15:26; 1 Cor. 2:4).

Question 11: Does the Holy Spirit still speak today?

Yes. Whenever someone claims to have heard from the

Holy Spirit, what they claim to have heard must be tested
against the Bible. If it contradicts, "adds to" or "takes away
from" the Bible, it isn't from the Holy Spirit.
Question 12: What are the benefits of the Advocate being sent to the
Church? Why should we think it is for our good that Jesus is gone,
but the Spirit has come?
God’s plan had been to send the Holy Spirit to mark the
beginning of the New Covenant. The Holy Spirit would
give followers of Jesus a new heart and God’s very
presence to guide, teach and grow them in Christlikeness.
Jesus was limited to a single place at a single time with his
human nature, but the Spirit would not have that boundary
as he would indwell all believers and lead them into truth.
