ONU and H196A Mesh Networking Provisioning Guide

1. Configure ONU Internet-access WAN Connection

1) The ONU before delivered is powered on normally and connected with the optical fiber;
2) Use a PC or mobile phone to access Internet, and observe whether the services are normal. If
yes, it indicates that the ONU services are commissioned normally.

2. H196A Networking Configuration

1) A new H196As is normally powered on;

2) Connect the WAN interface of the H196A with the LAN interface of the ONU with a network
cable;
3) Wait until the Mesh data synchronization is completed. After the blue indicator of H196A is on,
the networking is completed. The network cable can be removed and power off H196A. Use the
InSSIDer (for PC) or WiFi analysis tool (for mobile phone) to scan the 5G WiFi signal strength of
the ONU, and search the position above -65dBm for placing RSSI.
Remark:
If the networking of H196A fails for multiple times, it needs to restore the factory setting and
then perform networking once again.

General Mesh Provisioning Precautions:

1) Reasonably provisioned and used, try best to cross less walls, reduce obstacles and be away

from interference sources

2) For such scenarios as cross-layer, large household and complex structures, it is recommended

to use wired Mesh networking mode to expand coverage.

3) Mesh solution recommends 5G WiFi at most one wall to the nearest router, and the strength

of 5G WiFi signal should be above -65dBm.

3. Provisioning Suggestions under Typically Special Scenarios:

Scenario 1: Slender and long type

Such type of scenarios is slender and long, ONU is usually placed at the entrance. H196A uses

tree networking to connect ONU.

Provisioning Precautions:
1) For such scenarios, suggest provisioning one H196A first, after successfully networked with

ONU Mesh, put it in the middle of a room;

2) After the second H196A is successfully networked with ONU Mesh;

3) Connect the second H196A and the first one via wireline. It is OK if the wireline can be

connected to the ONU.

4) After provisioning is completed, be sure to use InSSIDer or WiFi analysis tool to check RSSI

from ONU 5G signal to the first H196A. The signal strength is suggested to be greater than -

65dbm. Otherwise, wired connection networking is needed.

Scenario 2: Multi-floor type

In such type of scenarios, ONU is usually placed at the entrance of the first floor. The thickness of

the wall between floors is 30~50cm. For such users, we strongly require cross-floor H196A to use

wired networking, while H196A on the same floor can use 5G WiFi networking.

Provisioning Precautions:
1) Do not place ONU and H196A at a place higher or lower than the ground. Try to ensure that

the user and the device are at a same level, slightly higher or slightly lower;

2) The external antenna of the ONU is vertical upwards, and the angle between the antenna and

the ground is 45。;

3) The H196As on other floors must use wired networking instead of wireless networking.

Scenario 3: Coffee shops, restaurants, shops, and other densely populated places
These types are densely populated, and have a large number of STA terminals, which is close to

or even exceeds the system load.

Provisioning Precautions:
1) The devices are distributed evenly in an indoor environment, covering the whole scenario as
much as possible;

2) ONU and H196A are connected via wired network, but not connected via wireless networking.

4. Position Suggestions for Placing ONU and H196A

1) Do not place the device in an unblocked position. Do not place the device at a corner or

behind an obstacle. Keep away from objects that affect wireless signals, such as strong reflectivity

objects like metal objects and mirrors;

2) Keep away from interference sources (other wireless routers/AP, microwave ovens, cordless

phones, Bluetooth devices, data centers and so on that will generate a great amount of high-

frequency noise);

3) Do not stack things on the device. Try to pass through the wall as little as possible to reduce

obstacles between the STA and the device;

4) If the distance between the ONU and the H196A is too long, or there are too many cross-floors

or obstacles, it is required to use wireline to connect H196A;

5) The vertical positions of ONU and H196A provisioning should not be too high or too low. They

can be placed on a table or mounted on a wall (recommended height: 1.2m ~ 1.5m).
