If you have extra time for in-person exams (according to your Schedule of Adjustments)
then you are entitled to a fixed additional 1 hour for this remote examination.
†
You will have an additional 1 hour to assemble and submit your PDF.
Important instructions
1. Start each question on a new sheet of paper.
2. Number your sheets of paper to help you scan them in order.
3. At the top of each page write the question number on the left and your student exam
number BXXXXXX on the top right.
4. Only write on one side of each piece of paper.
5. If you have rough work to do, simply include it within your overall answer – put
brackets at the start and end of it if you want to highlight that it is rough work.
√ √
(1) (a) Show that 11 ∈/ Q( 3). [3 marks]
√ √
(b) Find the degree [Q( 3, 11) : Q]. Briefly justify your answer. [2 marks]
√ √ √ √
(c) Prove that Q( 3, 11) = Q( 3 − 11). [3 marks]
√ √
(d) Find the minimal polynomial of 3 − 11 over Q and prove your claim. You
may use any results from the course provided you state them clearly.
[2 marks]
(2) (a) Show that the polynomial f (x) = x3 − 10x + 40 is irreducible over Q.
[4 marks]
(b) Using calculus or otherwise, show that f has only one real root — call it α, and
the two non-real roots β, γ. [4 marks]
(c) Write down a basis for Q(α) over Q. [2 marks]
(d) Factorise f over Q(α). Does it split here? [2 marks]
(e) Now factorise f over Q(α, β). Does it split here? [2 marks]
(f) Write down a basis for Q(α, β) over Q(α). Also write down a basis for Q(α, β)
over Q. [2 marks]
(g) How many automorphisms of Q(α, β) are there, and why? Clearly state any
results you use. Describe, with reasoning, the structure of the Galois group
Γ(Q(α, β) : Q). [4 marks]
(h) Determine all intermediate fields Q ⊂ F ⊂ Q(α, β) with [F : Q] = 2 and with
[F : Q] = 3, presenting your answer in the form Q(µ) for appropriate µ. Which
of these fields are normal extensions of Q? [5 marks]
(3) Suppose that E is the splitting field over a field k of some irreducible separable
quartic polynomial h(x) ∈ k[x], and that it splits over E as
(a) Describe possible factorisations of h over k(α1 ), and show that [k(α1 , α2 ) :
k(α1 )] ≤ 3. [4 marks]
(b) Show that [k(α1 , α2 , α3 ) : k(α1 , α2 )] ≤ 2. What is [k(α1 , α2 , α3 , α4 ) :
k(α1 , α2 , α3 )]? [2 marks]
(c) If Γ(E : k) ∼ = S4 , deduce that [k(α1 , α2 ) : k(α1 )] = 3 and [k(α1 , α2 , α3 ) :
k(α1 , α2 )] = 2. [4 marks]
(d) If k is a finite field with q elements, describe the structure of the group Γ(E : k).
You may assume results from Workshop 3. [5 marks]
