OBJECTIVE TYPE QUESTIONS(in book)

QUESTION AND ANSWERS (in notebook)

a) Define sources of electric current giving two examples.

ANSWER- Anything that produces an electric current is called a source of electric

current. For example, power plants, electric cells and batteries.

b) Infer that a dry cell is an easy-to-carry sources of electricity.

.
ANSWER- A dry cell is an electrochemical cell consisting of two electrolytes. The
entire cell is sealed so that the contents inside do not spill out. Due to this, they are a
safe and easy-to-carry source of electricity.

c) Explain what an electric switch is.

ANSWER- An electric switch is a device used for closing and opening an electric
circuit.

d) List any two uses each of conductors and insulators.

ANSWER -The two uses each of conductors and insulators are as follows:
a. Conductor such as copper is used in conducting wires and these are
covered with insulators such as hard plastic to protect us from electric
shocks.
b. Filaments inside bulbs are made of a metal called tungsten to allow flow
of current and the area around the filament is covered with glass as it is
insulator.
e)List any four safety measures we should take when using electricity.
ANSWER -The four safety measures we should take when using electricity are
as follows:
a. We should not insert anything metallic into an electric socket.
b. We should not use electrical appliances with wet hands.
c. We must not fly kites near electrical lines as it is dangerous to do so.
d. We should wear rubber-soled footwear when operating electrical
appliances.

2. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING IN DETAIL

a) Describe with a diagram the parts and working of a dry cell.

ANSWER- The dry cell consists of following components:

Outer metal covering: The outermost layer is a zinc container and inside it, is a
layer of a paste of ammonium chloride. It acts as a negative terminal of the cell.
Electrolyte: Inside the zinc metal, there is an electrolyte filled between two layers. It
is the charge carrier of electricity.
Metal rod: The innermost part is a rod that has a metal cap. The rod is usually made
of carbon. It acts as the positive terminal of the cell.
Working of dry cell: When the tip of the metal cap and the base of the zinc container
are connected to a small electric bulb through a metal wire, chemical reactions take
place inside the cell to produce an electric current that flows through the wire that
makes the bulb glow.
b) Compare and contrast the following:
ANSWER-

recharged after use. Hence, it is recharged after use. So, it can be
safely discarded after use. charged and used again.

source in a loop.

c) Describe briefly the parts of an electric bulb.

ANSWER -An electric bulb converts electrical energy into light energy. It
consists of a glass covering called the globe. The globe is generally filled with a gas
called argon. Inside the globe, there is a thin coiled metal wire called filament usually
made of tungsten. A pair of thin support wires support the filament and prevent it
from contacting the globe. Two contact wires connects to the base and to the foot. The
base and the foot are parts of the bulb that are fitted to the bulb holder.
d) Describe an electric circuit by drawing a suitable diagram and labelling the
parts of a circuit.
ANSWER-
A path in which the electric current flows is called an electric circuit. The electric
current flows from the positive terminal to the negative terminal of the electric cell.
A simple electric circuit can be made using a cell, a small bulb and two pieces of
connecting wires.

e) Explain with a suitable diagram the working of an electric torch in a closed

and open circuit.
An electric torch is a portable source of light. It contains a simple electric
circuit. Two (or more) cells are connected to a torch bulb through a sliding
switch. When we want to turn the torchlight ‘on’, we push the slide switch
forward, the circuit is completed, and the bulb lights up. When we want to
turn the torchlight ‘off ’, we pull the slide switch backward, circuit gets
broken, and the bulb goes off.
