DATE : 06 May 2006

SUBJECT : 36th WEEKLY TOOLBOX MEETING (START and FINISH SAFELY)

Objective :
To remind the workers that by getting the right foot in their job each day is important not only to their
personal success but to their safety as well, same goes for the end of the day, a good ending is a key
part of the overall safety picture.

I. Common safety tips in starting and finishing the work safely:

1. Take safety survey and take note the very common items; what shape is the area in ? are there any
slippery spots on the area/floor? and are there any tripping hazards around?
2. Consider the conditions, its simply because conditions change quickly, and from the time you left
the scene the day before; there may have been another shift working in the area, or maintenance or
cleaning crews may have altered the conditions you’re used to.
3. Try to maintain a cool steady pace, prepare yourself mentally when you arrive at work in the
morning, and be cautious toward the end of the day when fatigue may take over.
4. Quitting time; when quitting time, you still play an important part in the safety cycle. The condition
in which you leave your area or equipment will have a bearing on the safety of people who follow you
on the next shift and on your own safety when you report the next day. Remember : quitting time is the
time to take the safety of other into consideration, especially the safety of those who will be in the area
before you return.
5. Don’t just quit abruptly at the end of the day, this is as poor a practice as starting your job before a
brief survey of the situation, make sure your job is really finished, all machines turn off, tools and
other items off the ground and in their proper places.
6. Always pick up all trash, scrap and other waste and deposit it in the proper receptacles. Take time to
eliminate any slipping hazards by wiping up grease or water.
7. Communication – if there is any unusual condition that could be hazardous, make sure you
communicate it to your replacement or superior on the next shift.
8. REMEMBER: safety doesn’t punch a time clock, it has to be on the job for every shift, 24 hours
each day.

II. Right Habit, Safe Habit:

1. Right habits eliminate mistakes that endanger lives.
2. Right habits carry workers safely through their shifts without indecision or unsure acts that can
cause accidents.
3. Right habits can build a reserve of attention and energy that allows workers to be alert to
dangers.
4. Right habits are efficient, eliminating waste of time and making any job easier.
5. Right habit is constructive , making many chores routine and even automatic.
6. With right habits; there may even be time left over to think about how to do a better job, safer,
more productive, and more satisfying.
7. And best of all; doing things right, the first time and every time, not only makes the work itself
safer and more successful and satisfying, it also contributes to a spirit of friendly teamwork
with fellow employees.

Take Note :
Doing your part to promote cooperation and teamwork is another habit worth developing
and another way to set a good example.
