FOURIER SERIES
• A periodic motion is one which repeats itself in all details after a certain time interval
called the period of motion .
• From the mathematical theory, it can be shown that any periodic curve f(t) of
frequency (=2/) can be represented by a series of harmonic function, the
frequencies of which are the integral multiples of the frequency .
• The branch of mathematics which deals with splitting up a periodic function into a
series of harmonic function is called Harmonic Analysis.
2
FOURIER SERIES
• The various amplitudes of cosine and sine waves and a0 can be determined
analytically or numerically when f(t) is given.
𝑎0 ∞
• 𝑓 𝑡 = + 𝑛=1 𝑎𝑛 cos 𝑛𝑡 + 𝑏𝑛 sin 𝑛𝑡

FOURIER SERIES OF EVEN AND ODD FUNCTIONS
• An even function satisfies the relation x(-t)= x(t), Fourier series only contains cosine
terms, i.e.
𝑎0 ∞
• 𝑓 𝑡 = + 𝑛=1 𝑎𝑛 cos 𝑛𝑡
2
• An odd function satisfies the relation x(-t)= -x(t), Fourier series contains only sine
terms, i.e.
• 𝑓 𝑡 = ∞ 𝑛=1 𝑏𝑛 sin 𝑛𝑡
5
Although the series is an infinite sum, we can approximate most periodic
functions with the help of only a few harmonic functions.
