Lec 3

The document discusses Fourier series and harmonic analysis. It introduces periodic motion and how any periodic function can be represented by a Fourier series of harmonic functions with frequencies that are integer multiples of the base frequency. It provides formulas used and discusses Fourier series of even and odd functions.

FOURIER SERIES AND HARMONIC ANALYSIS

DR ANIL KUMAR
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL AND INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING

1
FOURIER SERIES

• A periodic motion is one which repeats itself in all details after a certain time interval
called the period of motion .
• From the mathematical theory, it can be shown that any periodic curve f(t) of
frequency  (=2/) can be represented by a series of harmonic function, the
frequencies of which are the integral multiples of the frequency .
• The branch of mathematics which deals with splitting up a periodic function into a
series of harmonic function is called Harmonic Analysis.

2
FOURIER SERIES

• The various amplitudes of cosine and sine waves and a0 can be determined
analytically or numerically when f(t) is given.

𝑎0 ∞

FOURIER SERIES OF EVEN AND ODD FUNCTIONS

• An even function satisfies the relation x(-t)= x(t), Fourier series only contains cosine
terms, i.e.

𝑎0 ∞
• 𝑓 𝑡 = + 𝑛=1 𝑎𝑛 cos 𝑛𝑡
2

• An odd function satisfies the relation x(-t)= -x(t), Fourier series contains only sine
terms, i.e.
• 𝑓 𝑡 = ∞ 𝑛=1 𝑏𝑛 sin 𝑛𝑡

5
Although the series is an infinite sum, we can approximate most periodic
functions with the help of only a few harmonic functions.
