NO.: GEN -INT-SPC-0018 REV. B PAGE 14 OF 49 5.0 54 ANALYZER SYSTEM DESIGN The analyzer system includes the sample system and the analyzer Some analyzers don't have any sample system because they are installed directly on the process pipeline, they are called “In-situ’ analyzers. ‘Sample System The sample system of analyzers shall consist of the following component parts: © The sample probe. ‘* The sample transport system or fast loop that is the sample line from the process. take off point to the sample conditioning system and the retum line from the sample conditioning system to the sample return point ‘+ The sample conditioning system that is the hardware necessary to suitably condition the sample for its inlet to the analyzer. + The analyzer calibration system that is the facilities provided to introduce reference sample into the analyzer for calibration purposes. ‘+ The sample system cabinet is the enclosure that houses the component parts of the sample conditioning system and calibration system for each analyzer as appropriate. Phase shall not be changed if the sample phase matches the phase required by the analyzer. Phase shalll be changed if required for analyzer system operation. To avoid erratic analysis results, if a phase change is designed into the sample transport system, the phase change shalll be maintained once it has occurred. Sample transport system components shall be stainless steel unless the process sample or environment is not compatible with stainless steel. Sample transport systems shall be designed and fabricated without low spots, vertical loops, or pockets. Al parts of the sample system including sample transport lines and all wetted parts shall be of AISI 316 with AISI 316 fittings or for application when stainless stee! is not suitable they shall be as required by process products. AISI 316 shall pay attention to temperature and pressure resistance features. For Sour Service conform to the latest version NACE MR 0175/ISO 15156, The analyzer and associated equipment must withstand to the presence of mercury in the ranges indicated in the process specifications. In any case carbon steel is not acceptable. In any case, analyzer shall have the independent sample take off, sample transport fast loop facilities and condition system even though same analyzer installed in the same point and same cabinet. BASIC DESIGN DOC. NO.: GEN -INT-SPC-0018 REV. B PAGE 15 OF 49 52 ‘Sample Take-Off and Sample Take-Off Probe ‘Sample Take-Off points are shown on the P&IDs. It is the PURCHASER’s responsibility to provide these sample Take-Off points that shall be in accordance with piping class. Sample Take-Off point shall be easily accessible and located on the upper part of process line to avoid carry-over condensate matter and solid particles. When necessary a sample Take-Off probe can be installed. The use and installation of sample Take-Off probe shall be done judiciously because it may introduce some undesirable vibrations in process lines. The Take-Off probe shall be maintained inline service. All insertion sample probes shall have mechanical protection Al insertion sample probes shall have method to take off from pipeline. The flushing of probes is advised by SUPPLIER accroding to the characteristics of the probes, provide flushing medium and shall be brought to PURCHASER’s attention for a decision. ‘The SUPPLIER shall provide the life of sample probes, also shall advise the technology of extended life of sample probes. Each system shall be equipped with the process shut off valve. That shall be ‘SUPPLIER's scope, and the rating class shall be in accordance with the piping class. ‘Sample take-off connections for gaseous products in horizontal process lines shall be installed on the top of the lines. ‘Sample take-off connections for liquid products in horizontal process lines shall be installed on the side of the process line. Where side entry is not practical, entry at a 45 degree angle upward is acceptable. The opening diameter of pocess pipeline that sample Take-Off probe needed is not less than 6 mm. If liquid in pipelines has been fully mixed, the location of sample Take-Off probe relative to pipe walls is not very important comparatively. However, in respect that pipe walls will affect flow velocity and water percentage, samples shall be collected from the center of pipeline so as to avoid such impacts. The sample Take-Off probe installed in horizontal or vertical pipelines collects samples from the dashed area indicated in as follow figure. BASIC DESIGN DOC. NO.: GEN -INT-SPC-0018 REV. B PAGE 16 OF 49 5.3.1 Y a>) a) ©) Location of the sampling point a) Horizontal pipe b) | Recommended area for the sampling point o) Vertical pipe Sample Transport System The primary objective of fast loop design shall be to minimize the sample transport time and the mass of sample transported. ‘The sizing of fast loop transport lines, calculation of response time and determination of fast loop pumps are the responsibility of the SUPPLIER. ‘Sample transport lines shall be designed for optimal lag times of typically 1 minute (unless process requirement require shorter or accept longer lag times). The sample return point selected directly influences fast loop design. The sample return point shall be selected to optimize the sample return flow to process. Single Line System This system consists of a single sample line draining or venting respectively to drain or to flare, SUPPIIER shall provide the discharge amount, discharge pressure and sample gas/liquid state. A good balance shall be found between a short sample time lag and a minimum amount of sample disposed via the bypass. BASIC DESIGN DOC. NO.: GEN -INT-SPC-0018 REV. B PAGE 17 OF 49 5.3.2 5.3.3 5.3.4 Process samples should not be discharged to atmospheric vent or drain, unless they do not adversely affect environmental quality or unless they do not represent a recoverable amount of capital. Fast Loop System In fast loop system, the sample is withdrawn directly from the fast loop to the sample conditioning system. The fluid flow should depend on the differential pressure between the take-off and return point in the process. Fast loop may be installed across process equipment that gives a constant differential pressure (e.g. pumps where sample take-off is located at discharge and return at suction side). Fast loops across orifice plates and control valve shall not be used. Fast loop pumps/compressors shall be used in case of insufficient pressure differential between sample take-off pressure and sample return pressure. When a fast loop pump. is required it shall be installed as close as possible to the sample take-off location to prevent cavitations. The pump unit shall include relief valve, inlet and outlet pressure gauges and upstream strainer. Pumps shall be suitable for the service conditions of the sample system. Cast iron pumps are not acceptable in any part cf the sample system. The fast loop pump/compressor shall have sufficient capacity to create an acceptable lag time (sample velocity approx.2m/s for liquid). Material Sample transport line material shall be selected to minimize the effects of adsorptionidesorption(e.g., moisture) or chemical reaction of contaminants or traces of it. In addition, heating (tracing) may be considered to avoid the adsorption/desorption problems. Sample transport lines for products in which reactive compounds have to be measured(traces HCL, H2S, etc.) shall have an internal surface of sufficient smoothness to avoid the retention of active molecules on the surface. These sample lines shall be cleaned with solvent or acidic sclutions(picking), depending on material, during commisioning Heat Tracing Insulation and heat tracing are required for the sample take-off point and the sample transportation lines when: '* The sample viscosity is too high to obtain short time lags. ‘+ The sample solidifies at the minimum ambient temperature. + A-sample after vaporization at the sample take-off point has to be maintained in the vapour phase. When required by the above criteria, insulation and heat-traced tubing shall be used for the sample transport system. Pre-fabricated insulated and traced tubing bundles shall be preferred over field-fabricated bundles. BASIC DESIGN DOC. NO.: GEN -INT-SPC-0018 REV. B PAGE 18 OF 49 54 The heat tracing temperature shall not exceed the area temperature claasification to prevent spontaneous ignition of hydrocarbon products at hot surfaces in case of a leak. Tracing of sample lines shall be either electrical or steam according to the sample and the power to provide. Heat tracing shall be independent for each sample transport system with its own isolation switch and (if requrired) control system. The design shall ensure a reasonably uniform temperature distribution througout the system, without hot or cold spots. The arrangement of heat tracing shall be such that the heating tracing doesn't obstruct other ‘componets. ‘Sample Conditioning System General The Sample Conditioning System is cesigned to fit the sample characteristics to ones acceptable at the analyzer inlet. It will include, but will not be limited to, pressure reduction and condensable/particle removal. The system shall be designed to minimize dead volumes and to have a continuous operation. The detailed design of the sample conditioning system is the responsibilty of the analyzer's SUPPLIER. If the sample system fails to property and continuously conditions the sample for the analyzer with the stream specification given in the analyzer data sheets supplied by the PURCHASER, repair and redesign of the system is the esponsibility of the SUPPLIER. Block valves (ball type) shall be installed on fast loops at the entry and exit points outside the sample system cabinets. Double block and bleed, or equivalent, shall be used to prevent an incorrect analysis caused by cross contamination from valve leaks in multi-stream sample systems and for the calibration streams. Primary flow, pressure and temperature (where sample temperature is not ambient) ‘measuring devices shall be installed in each fast loop at the sample conditioning system Fast loop flow meters shall be of the veriable area type and armoured A self-cleaning filter of appropriate design for the particular sample shall be installed in each fast loop. The sample to the analyzer shall be the slipstream from this filter. Dead-volume components contributing to increased lag time shalll be minimized. If water shall be removed from sample, coalescers shall be provided in the sample conditioning system. Flow meters shalll be provided in the coalescer drain legs. Faciliies for taking laboratory samples shall be provided for analyzer checking. Relief valves shall be provided downstream of pressure reducer to protect the analyzer and downstream conditioning system components. ‘Sample line to analyzer shall have a ‘low meter fitted with a low flow switch. The flow meter shall be armoured type when used on flammable gas. The requirements for sample cooling shall be determined by the SUPPLIER based upon process conditions supplied by the PURCHASER and upon temperature limits of the BASIC DESIGN DOC. NO.: GEN -INT-SPC-0018 REV. B PAGE 19 OF 49 analyzers and samples systems. Where cooling heat exchangers are required, a relief valve and flow indicator shall be included on the cooling waterside and a temperature indicator shall be installed in the dowrstream process sample side. The output of each exchanger shall be monitored for hich temperature and interlocked with the sample system shut-off valve in order to avoid damage to the analyzer and sample conditioning system.
