LIGHT - As a wave
Key concept - Development - A process of change and
growth
Related concept - systems - systematic development by
examining and testing ideas and theories
Global context - Fairness and Development - Improvements
in technological abilities help us tackle problems in medicine,
infrastructure, theatre…. At the same time Keeping a
balance in our connections with nature and utilizing our
resources wisely
An important area of investigation throughout the history of physics
has been the nature of light.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, scientists were investigating whether

light was a wave or a particle.

Without our knowledge of the nature of light, we wouldn’t have been able to
develop technology like these solar cells on the International Space Station.
Such improved technology can help us to find solutions to problems like
finding sustainable energy resources. It can also help develop scientific
theories and new tools to test our scientific understanding

REFLECTION -
water waves/light waves/sound waves

How do waves reflect?

All waves can be reflected.
Reflection is a process in which a wave bounces off an object.
We see reflection occurring when light bounces off a mirror, and we
hear the reflection of sound waves as echoes.
Light reflected by reflecting surfaces - mirrors
Water reflects back by a wall.

Water travels as wave

Echo ...a reflecting sound
wave
When sound wave hits a hard surface, it reflects ( comes
back)..this is echo

Discussion…
Why you hear an echo after sometime when you shout in
front of hill or mountain ...
So to conclude that light travels as a wave and
hence follows the laws of reflection of waves

Representing reflection graphically by ray diagram to

analyse and study further.

Key terms :
Beam of light , ray of light , Incident ray , reflected
ray , normal , reflecting surface , incident angle ,
reflecting angle.
Laws of reflection as applicable to light waves
Ray Diagram
Let us discuss ….
Suggest from where the light is coming …from water or air
How could you say so ?
What is angle of incidence here ?
What would be angle of reflection here ?
The reflected ray will be in air or water ? How could you say so ?
Can you identify the incident ray in the diagram shown ?
How do you expect the reflected light to go ?
Do you agree that reflection can change the direction of light ?
Where can you think in real world this concept is used ?
Can you guess how reflection will occur if two mirrors are placed
parallel to each other instead of perpendicular as shown here
These are called optical fibres .. they are very narrow cylindrical pipes
through which reflection of light happens multiple number of times..and
this the way it travels inside ..
They have wide medical use …
Few uses of optical fibres ….

How different would our today’s life be, if this property of

light was not investigated/discovered/implemented ?
Light does not only reflects.. It also refracts….
Now what’s that ?
Let us understand in our next session
