 Preface

Spice industry in Sri Lanka goes back to pre-historical period and as a result of the
excellent intrinsic quality Sri Lankan Spices the Culture, Politics and the Economy of the
country also in luenced by foreign invasions. Currently Export Agriculture Crop sector
comprised collectively with perennial Spices, Beverage, Essential oil and other crops mainly
cultivate for export purposes. Total contribution of the Export Agriculture Crops sector to the
National Foreign Exchange earnings from Agriculture sector is over 10% and provide
employment to about 900,000 people in the country.

Overall responsibility of this sector is with the Department of Export Agriculture,

established in 1972, and now the Department functions under the Ministry of Primary
Industries and Social Empowerment. The Department, with the collaboration of other Public
and Private sector organizations, is dedicated to solve the problems faced by the stake holders
engaged in Export Agriculture Crop production, processing trading and exportation. Planning
and Implementation of Research and Development programmes need information.

Information is the vital resource for identi ication of actual m needs and planning of
Research and Development programmes for national development. Information varies with
the nature of data collected and source of data. In the Agriculture sector that information
comprised with the extent of crop cultivated, geographical distribution of crop cultivation,
crop production, prices of the commodities, export volume, foreign exchange earnings etc.
Market information is one of the most important components of them. This document has
collected all the reliable information in respect to land extent under Export Agriculture Crops,
its contribution to National economy and foreign exchange earnings, Production and Export
related information since 1974 and farm gate prices of the products in related to change of
behavior with time, and world statistics on spices.

As the head of the Department I appreciate the effort made by Mrs. P.N. Uyanege,
Statistician, (Department of Census and Statistics), attached to the Department of Export
Agriculture, and Miss A.P.P. Disna ( Director Regulations) to collect all the information, and
compiled them for easy understanding by others. Without their dedicated keen effort, this
valuable document will not be a reality. I request all the stake holders including students who
use this document for their activities to acknowledge them.

 Acknowledgment

Export Agricultural crops have become a major component of the Sri Lankan economy.
Export Agricultural crops account for nearly 17% of contribution in the ield of agriculture
related export earnings. The major income of more than a million of rural people is generated
through the production, processing and sale of Export Agricultural Crops. This book which
contains the data in the ield of export could be of immense use to the of icers of the ministries,
departments, who are involved in planning, data users such as persons engaged in research
and undergraduates in universities.

Exports related data since 1974, price related data from 2000 and Imports related data
from 2005 have been included in this book.

The guidance extended by Dr. A.P. Heenkenda, the Director General, in the compilation
of this book and the assistance given by Miss A.P.P. Disna, Director (Regulations) by providing
the necessary guidance right from the beginning, are highly appreciated.

Similarly, I owe my gratitude to all the directors of the department for their
contribution in providing the relevant data and necessary guidance.

Note: Since accurate data on bearing extent and productivity are not available, production estimates
are made considering exports/imports and volumes of domestic sector consumption. Per capita
