SECTION A: 40 MARKS
(Answer all the question in this section)
1. State and explain any three precautions to be taken when handling electrical equipment
in an installation. [3 Marks]
• Always ware proper clothing and use the right tool for the right job.
• Switch off the supply before repairing/maintenance.
• Work quietly and give the job you are doing your full attention.
2. List four factors to be considered when selecting a given wiring system. [4 Marks]
• Installation conditions; Whether the installation is likely to be subjected to
mechanical damage, moisture, fumes, weather abnormalities or subnormal
temperatures, inflammable or explosive dusting gas/vapor.
• Durability: Whether the installation is to last for the time of life ot the building or
not. Certain systems have a ‘life’ in normal installation condition.
• Cost; (capital outlay required) whether the amount of money available for the
electrical installation part of building is restricted or not.
• Safety: This is an aspect which is extremely important apart from minimizing any
danger which may.
3. Outline the procedure of carrying out insulation resistance test. [3 Marks]
4. State three essential features of every supply point as required by the IEEE regulation.
[3Marks]
• A means of isolating all conductors of the installation from the mains supply
• Automatic protection against excess current by fuses or some form of circuit
breaker
• A means of earth leakage protection, though this may be needed where the
impedance of the earth leakage path is so low that the excess current protection also
gives earth leakage protection
5. Highlight four IEEE regulation requirements for lighting final sub-circuits. [4 Marks]

TN−S
PE and N are separate conductors that are connected together only near the power
source. This arrangement is a current standard for most residential and industrial
electric systems particularly in Europe.
TN−C
A combined PEN conductor fulfils the functions of both a PE and an N conductor.
TN−C−S
Part of the system uses a combined PEN conductor, which is at some point split up
into separate PE and N lines. The combined PEN conductor typically occurs
between the substation and the entry point into the building, and separated in the
service head. In the UK, this system is also known as protective multiple earthing
(PME), because of the practice of connecting the combined neutral-and-earth
conductor to real earth at many locations, to reduce the risk of electric shock in the

event of a broken PEN conductor - with a similar system in Australia and New
Zealand being designated as multiple earthed neutral (MEN).

II) tendering [2 Marks]
12. State two measuring equipment’s used for testing an electrical installation before
commissioning. [2Marks]
• continuity tester
• earth loop impedance tester
13. State four accessories used for the installation of cooker final sub-circuit. [2Marks].

SECTION B: 60 MARKS
(This section has FOUR questions, answer any THREE questions)
14.a) Assume you have been hired by a certain construction company as an electrical
technician, explain five Personal protective clothing (PPE) to be use for personal safety?
[10 Marks]
• Employees shall wear rubber-insulating gloves and properly sized leather protectors
where there is a danger of hand or arm injury due to contact with live parts or
possible exposure to arc flash burn.
• Electrical workers shall wear leather EH-rated footwear. Shoes should be clean and
free of oil and debris.
• Hearing protection is required when working in the arc flash boundary. Hearing
protective inserts are used to protect the employee in the event of an arc blast.
• Electrical workers shall wear helmets to protect their heads
• Electrical workers shall wear dust coats or overall to protect them from dust and
oily substance.
b) Draw a well-labeled circuit diagram for the two-way intermediate switching circuit
controlling lighting from four different positions. [10 Marks]

15. a) Discuss four classes of fire and their methods of prevention. [10 Marks]
• Class A fires are defined as ordinary combustibles. These types are fires use
commonly flammable material as their fuel source. Wood, fabric, paper, trash, and
plastics are common sources of Class A fires. This is essentially the common
accidental fire encountered across several different industries. Trash fires are one
such example. Class A fires are commonly put out with water or mono-ammonium
phosphate.
• The Class B fire is defined as one that uses a flammable liquid or gas as its fuel base.
Common liquid based fuel sources include petroleum based oils and paints,
kerosene, and gasoline. Flammable gases such as butane or propane are also
common fuel sources in Class B fires. Class B fires are a common hazard in
industries dealing with fuels, lubricants, and certain types of paint. Smothering
these types of fires to remove oxygen is a common solution as are chemical reactions
that produce similar effects.
• The Class C fire is defined as a fire that uses electrical components and/or energized
equipment as its fuel source. Electrical fires are often fueled by motors, appliances,
and electronic transformers. Electrical fires are common in industries that deal with
energy or make use of heavy electrically-powered equipment. However, electrical
fires can occur on smaller scales in all businesses (i.e. an overloaded surge protector
or bad wiring) and should be taken seriously. To extinguish such fires, you cut the
power off and use non-conductive chemicals to extinguish the fire.

• The Class D fire is defined as one that uses a combustible metal as its fuel source.
Examples of such combustible metals include titanium, magnesium, aluminum, and
potassium. Note that there are also other metals with combustive properties you
may encounter. Class D fires are a danger in laboratory environments. However, be
aware that combustible metals are used as part of production and other industry
processes, and you need to be certain of what materials you are using for day-to-day
operations. When confronted with such a fire, common extinguishing agents such as
water are ineffective and can be hazardous. To extinguish a Class D fire, use a dry
powder agent. This absorbs the heat the fire requires to burn and smothers it as
well.
