PIPING LINE CLASS G150

OCTOBER 2016 15480.G150 -2
A. The designer shall consider elimination of threaded piping with the use of Victaulic Vic-PressTM
piping for NPS 2" and smaller.
B. Acetate tow manufacturing prohibits the use of any fluoropolymers, such as PTFE and PTFE
materials using trade names such as "Teflon" and "Viton", to be in direct contact with the acetate
tow dope and tow fibers as restricted per Specification 15480.0001, para. 1.6(G).
C. cGMP Requirements - Pharmaceutical, Food and Feed Grade piping shall comply with Current
Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) guidelines. Pipe and piping components, including
gaskets, shall not contain materials that are hazardous for human consumption. Design safety,
hazards and cross contamination issues shall be addressed with regards to proper piping
materials, systems design/layout and cleaning. For cGMP guidelines and piping requirements,
see cGMP Piping Requirements Policy and Guidelines: SOP Number: EAST-GMP-DIV-21.
D. Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) - The SDWA prohibits the use of certain items that are not
"lead-free" in potable (drinking) water services. The rule does not require removal of piping that
does not meet the definition of lead-free. However, new installations and repairs to existing
drinking water systems involving pipe, plumbing fittings or fixtures, solder and flux are subject
to the lead free standard. Only the brass and bronze valves of this specification are prohibited.
Stainless steel valves are acceptable and specified for potable water service.

NOTES:
02 Pipe acceptable substitutes are ASTM A53-E, A53-S, A135, API 5L-B, and A106-B carbon steel
with hot dip galvanize coating per ASTM A123.
03 Remove and discard straight-threaded coupling if furnished on pipe.
04 Threaded fitting acceptable substitutes are ASTM A105 forged steel Class 2000 or 3000 NPT per
ASME B16.11 with hot dip galvanize coating per ASTM A123.
05 Flanges shall be ASTM A105 carbon steel flanges with hot dip galvanize coating per ASTM A123.
06 Thread sealant/compound to be used on all thread joints except if seal welding is used. Refer to
Specification 15480.0208.
08 ASTM A307-B low strength bolts are required in joints with ASME Class 125 cast iron flanges.
09 Provide flat face flanges adjacent to Class 125 CI flat face valves and equipment nozzles. Use the RF
to FF (or LJ to FF) spacer rings where it is not practical to modify the mating raised face.
11 Corrosion inhibitor coating (cold galvanizing compound) to be used per Para. 3.5(A).
13 Provide full-face gaskets at flat face flanges.
14 Line blinds, spacers, restricting orifices, and spectacle blinds shall be per Standard Detail
15480.2502.
17 Quick disconnect fittings for nitrogen hoses and nitrogen hose stations must not be compatible with
fittings used for breathing air or other gases. Nitrogen is an inert non-toxic gas that will not support
life and is therefore an asphyxiation hazard.
18 Conical Strainer to be used as temporary start-up strainer at pumps.
19 Install in horizontal position with cover up or in vertical position with upward flow.
20 Install in horizontal position or in vertical position with upward flow.
22 These items have no flanges but are installed between line flanges with extra length bolts.
27 Valve Index 29 for use when more positive flow check is desired.
82 For PTFE restriction and food grade requirements for Acetate Tow manufacturing, see
Specification 15480.0001, Para. 1.6(G).
G1 Use hardened washer with 1-inch & larger flange nuts, and where needed to apply a more uniform
bolt torque and/or lower friction contact for the nut or bolt head. Washers are recommended where
flange back bearing surfaces are not parallel or appear damaged, or, to prevent gouging damage to
the flange back bearing surface. Use of washers may require extra length bolts.
V19 Valves which are to be installed in insulated piping systems shall have extended stems, extended
bonnets, or raised operating handles with lockout capabilities which will allow full insulation plus
hand clearance of approximately 3-inches (76 mm).
V35 Check valves shall be sized according to operating/process conditions - not line size. Critical
applications include turbulent flow, flow fluctuation and flow rates that result in a less than a fully
open valve disk. Consult manufacturer’s specifications for correct sizing.
V42 Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for proper installation of valves including cautions on weld

3.3 FABRICATION
A. See Specification 15480.0100, "Piping, General Fabrication"
B. Connections:
1. Instrument - Piping described in this section will be used for instrument piping to and
including the instrument shut-off valve. Instrument piping/tubing on the outlet side of the
instrument shut-off valve is governed by Instrumentation standards administered by
Process Control.
2. Trapping - Inert Gas and Service Air piping will have condensate drainage traps installed
about every 500 feet (152 m) in horizontal runs and at each rise of elevation in the direction
of flow. See Standard Detail 15481.300-001, "Condensate Drip Leg for Compressed Air
and Gas Systems".

3.4 INSTALLATION
A. See Specification 15480.0200, "Piping, General Installation"
B. Bolting:
1. Lubricant is required and shall be applied evenly on the bolt threads and all other mating
surfaces of the nut, washer, and bolt (e.g., the face of the washers, the inner face of the nuts,
and the inner face of the bolt head if applicable). See Specification 15480.0207,
"Lubricants for Bolting" to determine the correct lubricant to use.

2. See Specification 15480.0210, "Flange Assembly Guidelines for Bolted Joints in Piping",
for the assembly of bolted flange connections on piping systems.

3.5 PAINTING/COATING
A. Cold Repair of Galvanized Items: All groove ends, cuts, and exposed portions of threads,
including support connections shall be coated after installation using an organic zinc-rich
coating. The areas to be coated shall be free of grease, oil, rust, scale, and other contaminates.
The dry film thickness shall be 2 to 3 mils (0.05 to 0.08mm) and contain a minimum of 94%
zinc dust by weight.
B. Coating for Identification or for Protection in Highly Corrosive Areas: The coating system
utilized for a particular application shall be selected in accordance with the "Coatings Design
Handbook." Color-coding shall also be in accordance with the "Coatings Design Handbook."
All decisions on choice of coating system, color, etc., will be made by the
Architect/Engineer/Eastman Representative and not by the Coatings Contractor. Also see EES
Specification COS007 A, "Protective Coatings for Steel Substrates."

3.6 TESTING
A. See Specification 15480.0300, "Piping, General Testing"
B. Apply an Initial Service Leak Test.

3.7 CLEANING
A. See Specification 15480.0500, "Piping, General Cleaning"
B. See Specification 15486.820, "Sterilization of Drinking Water Lines (Piping Above Ground)"

3.8 PRECAUTION
A. Nitrogen is an inert non-toxic gas that will not support life and is therefore an asphyxiation
hazard. Care must be taken to prevent releases, such as relief valve discharges, into enclosed
spaces. Nitrogen hose stations must be plainly labeled "NITROGEN-ASPHYXIATION
HAZARD."
B. Quick disconnect fittings for nitrogen hoses and nitrogen hose stations must not be compatible
with fittings used for breathing air or other gases. Quick disconnect couplings for nitrogen hose
stations, as well as air and water, shall be in accordance with Specification 15481.101, "Hose
