Lesson Plan for Year 10 GCSE Maths

Topic: Quadratic Equations

Lesson Objectives:

 Understand the standard form of a quadratic equation.

 Learn how to solve quadratic equations using factorization, completing the square,
and the quadratic formula.
 Apply quadratic equations to solve real-world problems.

Materials Needed:

 Whiteboard and markers

 Projector and computer for presentations
 Student worksheets
 Graph paper
 Scientific calculators

Lesson Duration:

 60 minutes

Lesson Outline:

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Welcome and Attendance: Greet students and take attendance.

2. Starter Activity: Quick recap quiz on linear equations to ensure foundational
knowledge.
o Example Questions:
 Solve 2x+3=112x + 3 = 112x+3=11
 Find the x-intercept of the line y=5x−10y = 5x - 10y=5x−10
3. Objective Introduction: Explain the objectives of the lesson and the importance of
understanding quadratic equations.

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

1. Introduce Quadratic Equations:

o Definition: A quadratic equation is any equation of the form ax2+bx+c=0ax^2
+ bx + c = 0ax2+bx+c=0 where a≠0a \neq 0a=0.
o Show examples on the board: 2x2−4x+2=02x^2 - 4x + 2 = 02x2−4x+2=0,
x2+6x+9=0x^2 + 6x + 9 = 0x2+6x+9=0.
2. Methods of Solving Quadratic Equations:
o Factorization:
 Example: Solve x2+5x+6=0x^2 + 5x + 6 = 0x2+5x+6=0.
 Step-by-step breakdown of factoring the quadratic equation.
o Completing the Square:
 Example: Solve x2+4x+1=0x^2 + 4x + 1 = 0x2+4x+1=0.
 Explain the method of completing the square and how it can be used to
derive the quadratic formula.
o Quadratic Formula:
 Introduce the quadratic formula: x=−b±b2−4ac2ax = \frac{-b \pm \
sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}x=2a−b±b2−4ac.
 Example: Solve 2x2+3x−2=02x^2 + 3x - 2 = 02x2+3x−2=0 using the
formula.

Guided Practice (15 minutes)

1. Classwork:
o Distribute worksheets with quadratic equations to solve using each method.
o Example Problems:
 Solve x2−7x+12=0x^2 - 7x + 12 = 0x2−7x+12=0 by factorization.
 Solve x2+6x−7=0x^2 + 6x - 7 = 0x2+6x−7=0 by completing the
square.
 Solve 3x2−x−4=03x^2 - x - 4 = 03x2−x−4=0 using the quadratic
formula.
2. Group Activity:
o Students work in pairs to solve the problems and discuss their methods.
o Teacher walks around to offer assistance and feedback.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

1. Worksheet Completion: Students work independently on additional problems from

the worksheet.
2. Real-World Application:
o Example Problem: A ball is thrown upward with an initial velocity of 20 m/s
from a height of 1.5 m. Its height hhh in meters after ttt seconds is given by
the equation h=−5t2+20t+1.5h = -5t^2 + 20t + 1.5h=−5t2+20t+1.5. Find the
time when the ball hits the ground.
o Guide students to set up the equation −5t2+20t+1.5=0-5t^2 + 20t + 1.5 =
0−5t2+20t+1.5=0 and solve it.

Review and Recap (5 minutes)

1. Summary: Recap the key points of solving quadratic equations using different
methods.
2. Exit Ticket:
o Quick question to assess understanding: Solve x2−2x−8=0x^2 - 2x - 8 =
0x2−2x−8=0 by factorization.
o Collect responses as students leave the classroom.

Homework Assignment:

 Complete the worksheet problems not finished in class.

 Additional Problems:
o Solve 4x2−12x+9=04x^2 - 12x + 9 = 04x2−12x+9=0 by completing the
square.
o Solve 5x2+6x+1=05x^2 + 6x + 1 = 05x2+6x+1=0 using the quadratic formula.
Assessment:

 Formative assessment through class participation and guided practice.

 Summative assessment through homework and a quiz in the next class.

Reflection:

 After the lesson, review the effectiveness of the teaching methods based on student
feedback and performance.
 Adjust future lessons to address any difficulties students encountered.

By the end of the lesson, students should have a solid understanding of quadratic equations
and be able to solve them using multiple methods.
