How to service

Front line service

The overall service strategy is to service the products in the local stores or in a
qualified service center. Exchange modules must be returned for repair at Bang &
Olufsen, Module Repair Department.
Fault description must be made in the Retail Order System, Exchange Module.

BeoSound 8 will be serviced on chassis/module level only as described in the

Service Manual.

Only the necessary information on how to dismantle/assemble, fault-find on

module level, replace and adjust electronics/mechanics will be described.

The static-protective field service kit must always be used when the product is
disassembled or modules are being handled.

Other service issues

This product does not have pincode protection.

Preparations before service

Fault explanation and demonstration

Before troubleshooting is initiated, let the customer demonstrate the fault, if
possible.

Handling and cleaning

Static electricity
Static electricity may damage the product.
STATIC ELECTRICITY
MAY DESTROY THE
PRODUCT Static-protective field service kit.
A static-protective field service kit must always be used when the product is
disassembled or modules are being handled.
Follow the instructions in the guide and use the ESD-mat for both old and new
ESD modules.

Please note:
When mains voltage on the product is required, remove the connection between
the product and the ESD-mat.

The chassis or modules must always be connected to the static-protective field

service kit or placed in an ESD-proof bag.

Symbol of safety components

When replacing components with this symbol, the same type has to be used, also
the same values for ohm and watt.
The new component is to be mounted in the same way as the replaced one.

Cleaning
Please refer to the chapter ‘Final check after repair’ or the User’s guides.

Transport and handling

It is recommended to use the product cover when transporting the product.
The product cover can be ordered.

Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

Electrical and electronic equipment, parts and batteries marked with this symbol
must not be disposed of with normal household wastage; all electrical and
electronic equipment, parts and batteries must be collected and disposed of
separately.

Indicator light
The indicator light

Green The light is green when BeoSound 8 is switched on.

Orange The light is orange when playback is paused or muted.
Red When BeoSound 8 is switched to deep sleep, the light flashes red
once. Press and hold for more than 5 seconds for ‘deep sleep’.

In ‘deep sleep’, the power consumption is very low, however a docked iPod/iPhone
or iPad is not charged. This function can only be obtained by close-up operation.

Speaker unit check

Measure the impedance of the speaker unit to determine if the fault is caused by a
speaker unit.
It is recommended to measure on the terminals on the speaker unit.
The speaker must be disconnected from BeoSound 8.

Nominal value Limits

Woofer 4.5 ohm 3 - 8 ohm
Tweeter 5.5 ohm 4 - 10 ohm

If the speaker unit is outside the limits, it is defective and must be replaced.

PCB48, NTC
If the temperature around the PCB48, NTC becomes too high, the amplifier turns
down the volume.

Keyboard test
Use a multimeter to measure the keys on the keyboard. The test point next to
each key is grounded when the key is activated

Contents in ServiceTool
ServiceTool contains complete information concerning:
- How to connect ServiceTool to the product
- List of functions handled by ServiceTool
- Instructions for using the functions

Survey of features in ServiceTool

The ServiceTool contains the following features:
- Read out the product serial no.
- Read out software versions
- Key in the product serial no. after replacing 999 Module, Main chassis
- Key in speaker values for calibration after replacement of speakers
- Update the software version
Speaker calibration 3.3

Speaker calibration
Filter calibration on 999 Module, Main chassis.

The speaker units are individually measured and the 999 Module, Main chassis
must be calibrated accordingly.

Calibration must be performed when either speaker unit or 999 Module, Main
chassis is replaced.

Calibration must be performed by means of ServiceTool MKII.

Refer to ServiceTool MKII.
3.4 Final check after repair

Final check after repair

The final check after repair describes the activities needed to ensure that the
product will be returned in perfect condition to the customer.

The contents is:

- AC leakage test
- Check product information
- Restore the setup and check connections and sound
- Final cleaning of the product

Insulation test
Each set must be insulation tested after having been dismantled. Make the test
when the set has been reassembled and is ready to be returned to the customer.
Flashovers must not occur during the testing procedure!
Make the insulation test as follows:
Short-circuit the two pins of the mains plug and connect them to one of the
terminals of the insulation tester. Connect the other terminal to ground on the
AUX socket.

Note!
To avoid damaging the set it is essential that both terminals of the insulation tester
have good contact.
Slowly turn the voltage control of the insulation tester until a voltage of 2.5 kV
and max. 10mA is obtained. Maintain that voltage for one second, then slowly
turn it down again.

Product information
Check that the serial number is correct.

Check all sources are working correctly

Check that sound on all sources are working correctly.

Clean the product

Never use alcohol or other solvents to clean any part of the product!

Cabinet surfaces
Wipe dust off the surfaces using a dry, soft cloth.
Remove grease stains or persistent dirt with a soft, lint-free, firmly wrung cloth,
dipped in a solution of water containing only a few drops of mild detergent, such
as washing-up liquid.
The speaker cover may also be cleaned with a soft brush mounted on a vacuum
cleaner, set to the lowest level.
