Leopold's maneuver

*Introduction*
Leopold's maneuver is used to determine the number of fetuses, presentation, position,
degree of descent, and attitude.

Before anything else, I already prepared the necessary equipment that I'll be using such as
Pillow, Towel, and Stethoscope also I performed handwashing to avoid any cross-
contamination.

I'll be introducing myself to the patient and verify the patient's identity using two identifiers.
Good day ma'am! I am Jake Louise Cabrera your student nurse for today can you please lend
me your arm (use two identifiers) how would you like for me to address you? So for today, I'll
be performing Leopold's maneuver which is an easy method to determine the position of your
baby inside your uterus meaning that I'll be touching your abdomen and adding a little
pressure, is that okay for you po? so do you have any questions regarding the procedure? and
I'll be closing the doors and blinds to ensure the patient's privacy and the environment is free
from distractions. but before we start for you to be comfortable I encourage you to void first.
because a distended bladder may slightly deviate from the uterus.

Procedure
To start I need you to lie down and slightly flex your knee and please turn to the side a little so
that I can place a towel underneath your hip, the patient should be in a supine position with
one pillow under her head and with a flexed knee would relieve the tension in the abdominal
musculature and placing a towel beneath the patient's hip will displace the uterus off of the
inferior vena cava and the aorta preventing the supine hypotensive syndrome

To proceed ill be needing to expose your abdomen will that be alright? and remember to
expose only the area of examination also if right-handed stand on the patient's right side facing
the patient

First Maneuver
I will now proceed with the First maneuver which is also called the fundal grip now face the
patient and palpate the uterine fundus *perform* to determine which part of the baby is at the
upper part of the uterus it can be the fetal head or the breech and remember that the fetal
head is round, hard, freely movable, and ballotable while breech feels softer and nodular
Second Maneuver
Now for the next maneuver which is the Second maneuver also known as the umbilical grip and
to perform palpation downward on the sides of the abdomen applying gentle and deep
pressure to determine the position of the fetal back and extremities *perform*. remember if
you feel a long continuous structure it is the fetal back while the extremities will feel nodular.

Third Maneuver
To perform the Third maneuver, I'll be placing my hand over the symphysis pubis and grasp the
lower uterine segment between my thumb and fingers to feel the presenting part and if
engagement has already occurred *perform*, remember that if the presenting part is still
movable it is not engaged.

Fourth Maneuver
For the Fourth and last maneuver which is called the pelvic grip is done to confirm the 3rd
maneuver and determine the flexion of the vertex. to perform turn and face the women's feet
and we'll be palpating downwards starting from the inguinal ligament *perform*.
and now that we are done with Leopold's maneuver, I will now locate the fetal back to listen for
the fetal heart tone.

FHT
Ma'am, I will now be listening to your baby's heartbeat, I will now place my stethoscope over
the side where the fetal back is located and listen for one full minute and note the location,
rate and character of the FHT afterwards.

Closing Phase
Now that we are done with the procedure, I will now cover your abdomen and are you
comfortable?

next is ill summarize the information that I've gathered *summarize and discuss* The
information that I've gathered shows that almost every factor is normal do you have any more
questions or clarifications?

*okay thank you so much for your cooperation ma'am*

Lastly, I'll be performing handwashing to avoid cross-contamination and also document the
data gathered from the assessment. *perform*
