PROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION
1. General

1.1. Subject
This specification establishes the requirements for the marking of aircraft parts by vibro-
engraving.

1.2. Application
Vibro-engraving may be used for marking metallic. plastic. glass or ceramic parts. Unless other-
wise specified on the drawing. the marks shall be applied prior to the application of protective
coating (cadmium. plating. anodizing. paint. etc.). No marking shall be performed on the aircraft
outer surface.

1.3. Warning
Make certain that air lines and electric cables and connections used in the engraving workshop
are in good condition and show no signs of damage. Switch off all electric equipment when not in
use.

1.3.1. Materials
a)Inhibited trichloroethane
-Fire risk: nil
-Flash point: nil
-Threshold limit value: 350 p.p.m.
-Description: a colourless non-flammable liquid with a low boiling point. The vapor is
heavier than air and will accumulate at low levels.
Storage: separate from other chemicals and acids.
- Precautions in use: avoid inhaling fumes which in small quantities can cause drowsiness
and other troubles. Use of naked lights or welding must not be allowed near the liquid.
When handling. PVC gloves must be worn.
Contact with eyes should be avoided. if there is a danger of splashing protective goggles must
be worn.
Use in a well ventilated area with a fumes extraction systems . If the area in which these mate-
rials are used does not comply with safety requirements, masks shall be worn. It is advisable to
wear a PVC apron .
- Immediate first aid:
Skin contact: drench with water
Eye contact: irrigate and obtain medical attention
Excessive inhalation: move patient to fresh air and obtain medical attention.
- Disposal of waste : disposal of all poisonous wastes must be in accordance with the safety
requirements in force in the factory.
b) White spirit

- Disposal of poisonous or flammable waste: disposal of all poisonous or flammable waste
must be in accordance with the safety requirements in force in the factory.

2. Equipement and materials

2.1. Equipment
- Pneumatic engraving tool
- Electric vibro tool
- Vibro engraving tool V.P.2
- RRCOI engraving pen
- Kuhlmann engraving machine
- BURGESS vibro engraving tool
- Clean lintfree cloth
- Diamond engraving tip

2.2. Materials
- Soapy water
- Cleaning solvent 1.1.1. Inhibited trichloroethane
- White spirit

3. Process

3.1. Principle of vibro-engraving tool

The vibro-engraving tool works on a vibration principle. The hard alloy. carbide. tantalum or
diamond engraving tip vibrates 6000 times per minute. The theoretical radius of the engraving
tip is 2'.: 0.2 mm .

PROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

Care shall be taken that:

- The marks are located outside close tolerance surfaces and bolt or rivet lines.
- The marks are located at a min imum distance of 2 mm from hole and part edges .
- The marks are applied to the heads of bolts and the outer face of shafts.

3.3. Preparation of surfaces

Vibro-engraving shall be carried out on a clean surface . A lintfree cloth soaked in a deaning
solvent such as 1.1.1. inhibited trichloroethane may be used for this purpose.
This cleaning solvent should not be used on PVC. nylon. PTFE. glass fiber resin assemblies or
other plastics.
Warm soapy water or white spirit should be used to clean these parts.
3.4. Type of mark
Marking types and symbols shall comply with instructions given on the drawing.

3.5. Marking
Marking shall be performed mechanically if so required for esthetic reasons.
Otherwise, a vibro-engraving hand tool may be used .
The engraving tool must have been pre-set for the appropriate purpose and shall have been colour
coded according to the material being engraved; yellow for light alloys (magnesium and copper
alloys) and red for steel and nickel alloys.
The engraving tool is held on the material in the same way as any writting instrument (pencil.
etc .).
On very hard materials the tip shall be held perpendicular to the surface being engraved . The
engraving shall be as light as possible consistant with legibility.

3.6. limitations
A diamond tip may be used for small letters or hard parts (radius ~ 0.2 mm) .
3.7. Time of marking
Marking shall be performed whenever possible before manufacture. immediately after routing.
This ensures that parts being manufactured are correctly associated with their trailer cards .
Marking must be performed before surface protective treatment and tempering.

3.8 . Location of marking

The location of the marking shall be determined by the Design Office on the detail drawing. The
D.O shall take into account the dangers from fatigue on certain important parts . A flat parallel
surface or appropriate supports providing a good bearing surface is indispensable. The marking
must not cause deformation on the opposite face of a thin material.

PROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

In accordance with standard acceptance stamps or in function of the part varying from 2.5 to 4
mm.

3.10. Depth of engraving

The engraving depth is set by means of the engraving tool adjusting knob. Depth shall not exceed
0.05 mm.

4. Quality assurance
The operating safety and accuracy of the engraving tooling shall be checked periodically. Control
shall ensure that the requirements of this specification have been correctly applied . Control of the
marking depth and legibility shall be performed with a 10 x magnifier. Control shall check that the
location of the marking complies with instructions given on the drawing.
