2–3 (Students circle 2 of the negative options.) About 300 million years ago, Earth
looked very different from now. Only a few simple plants lived. Some small
creatures lived in the ocean. They didn’t have any bones.
Over time, they developed into fish. After many millions of years, some of these
fish changed. They didn’t live in water anymore. They lived on land. These
animals were amphibians. Over many, many years, amphibians changed into
reptiles.
Some reptiles developed into dinosaurs. At that time, there were lots of
different plants and animals to eat. Dinosaurs survived on Earth for over 140
million years. But they didn’t live forever. They disappeared!

were around at the same time as dinosaurs. A pterodactyl had two wide wings
and a long hard beak. It could fly with these wings, like birds today. When it
wasn’t flying, it probably walked on all four feet. These animals were meat-
eaters. A pterodactyl had about ninety short, pointed teeth.

Greeks used hula hoops as a form of exercise. Hoops in the past were made
from metal, bamboo, and grasses. In 1958, the company Wham-O used a
special plastic to make the hoop. They called it hula hoop, and they registered
this name. No one else could use this name. The hula hoop is still a popular toy
today. And now adults and children can try hula hoop classes!
