QUARTER 1 | LESSON 1

MEASURING TOOLS
AND IMPLEMENTS
.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?
LEARNING COMPETENCY:
• Identify object or component to be measured.
• Choose test instruments to be used for specific tasks.
• Identify alternative measuring tools without sacrificing cost
and quality of work.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• LO 1. Select measuring tools and instruments; and
• LO 2. Carry out measurements and calculations.

This lesson will discuss the importance of using the right measuring tools and
instruments for the job. Each measuring tools and instruments are precisely
designed for a specific purpose, so using the correct measuring tools and
instrument will make the work precise and accurate.

Measuring tools are sensitive instruments of surface hardened steel

provided with scales of different degree of accuracy. Simple measuring tools
are mainly used in single-part production and maintenance work.

WHAT DO I KNOW?
Let us see how well do you know about the topic.
Begin by answering the Pre-Test on the next page..
Use your notebook in writing your answers.

1 IMPLEMENTS

WHAT’S IN?
You learned from our previous lesson the different electrical supplies and
materials like electrical wire/conductor, flat cord and conduits which are used to
carry electrical current from the source to the current consuming apparatus. In
order for us to determine the exact size of materials and exact measurement of the
location or area, we have to know how to use the different measuring tools.

WHAT’S NEW?

Hello! We are the Electrical Measuring Tools

and Instrument. We make every day living
easy, from measuring the size of the wire,
resistance, current, and voltage, up to
computing the total electricity consumed at
your home. But did you know where we come
from?

WHAT IS IT?
Measuring Tools and Implements

These are used to measure currents, voltages, resistances, wattages and other
important elements in electrical works. Different kinds of measuring tools and
precision measuring instruments are as follows:
Test Light - is a pocket size tool used to test the line wire or circuit if there is current in
it.

Push pull- rule is a measuring tape that coils into a compact case. It is used for
measuring long, short, straight lengths.

Clamp Ammeter - is also called tong- tester. It is used to measure current flowing in
a conductor. It is clamped or hanged in a conductor.

Megger - Measures Resistance of a Winding of Motor or Generator and Measures

Earthing's Resistance

Tachometer- A tachometer (revolution-counter, tach, rev-counter, RPM gauge) is an

instrument measuring the rotation speed of a shaft or disk, as in a motor or other machine

Electricity Meter- An electricity meter, electric meter, electrical meter, or energy

meter is a device that measures the amount of electric energy consumed by a
residence, a business, or an electrically powered device. Electric utilities use electric
meters installed at customers' premises for billing and monitoring purposes. They are
typically calibrated in billing units, the most common one being the kilowatt hour
(kWh). They are usually read once each billing period.

Multimeter- A multimeter or a multitester, also known as a VOM (volt-ohm-

milliammeter), is an electronic measuring instrument that combines several
measurement functions in one unit. A typical multimeter can measure voltage,
current, and resistance. Analog multimeters use a micrometre with a moving
pointer to display readings. Digital multimeters (DMM, DVOM) have a numeric
display, and may also show a graphical bar representing the measured value.
Digital multimeters are now far more common due to their lower cost and greater
precision having obsoleted analog multimeters.

Megohmmeter or insulation resistance tester - is a special type of ohmmeter used

to measure the electrical resistance of insulators

Ammeter (Ampermeter)- n ammeter (from Ampere Meter) is a measuring

instrument used to measure the current in a circuit. Electric currents are measured
in amperes (A), hence the name. Instruments used to measure smaller currents, in
the millampere or microampere range, are designated as millimetres or micro
ammeters.
Wattmeter is an instrument for measuring the electric power (or the supply rate of
electrical energy) in watts of any given circuit. Electromagnetic wattmeter is used
for measurement of utility frequency and audio frequency power; other types are
required for radio frequency measurements.
Measurement is the process or the result of determining the ratio of a physical quantity, such
as a length, time, temperature, etc., to a unit of measurement, such as the meter, second or
degree Celsius. The science of measurement is called metrology. The English word
measurement originates from the Latin mēnsūra and the verb metiri through the Middle
French mesure.
Electrical measuring tools and instruments are sensitive and delicate so extra
care is necessary in handling them. These are used to measure currents, voltages,
resistances, wattages and other important elements in electrical works. This topic,
will tackle the function/use of each measuring tool and instrument used in doing a
electrical task. Different kinds of measuring tools and precision measuring
instruments are as follow
