TOPIC 6

BEAM- COLUMNS
6.1 DEFINITION
6.2 INTERACTION FORMULAS
EXAMPLE 6.1
The beam-column shown is pinned at both ends and is subjected to the loads
shown. Bending is about the x-axis. Determine whether this member satisfies the
appropriate AISCS interaction equation. Use LRFD
SOLUTION:
6.3 METHOD OF ANALYSIS FOR REQUIRED
STRENGTH
6.4 THE MOMENT AMPLIFICATION METHOD
EXAMPLE 6.2
Compute the LRFD amplification factor for the beam- column of Example 6.1
Solution:

The Euler load Pe (from Topic 4- Compression Members) is:

Pe = π2 EIx/(𝐾𝑥𝐿)2 = 3.14162 x 200,000 x 113,000,000/(1x 5,200)2 (1000)
= 8249. 042 KN
From Example 6.1: Pu= 890 KN, and the moment amplification factor is,
1/[(1- (Pu/Pe)]= 1/[(1- (890/8249.042)]= 1.121
which represents a 12.1% increase in bending moment. The amplified
primary LRFD
moment is
1.121 x Mu= 1.121 x 144.56= 162.052 KN.m

Therefore, Amplification factor= 1.121

6.5 BRACED VERSUS UNBRACED FRAMES
6.6 MEMBERS IN BRACED FRAMES
EXAMPLE 6.3
The member shown is part of a braced frame. An analysis consistent with the
effective length method was performed; therefore, the flexural rigidity, EI, was
unreduced. If A572 steel (Fy= 345 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa), is this member
adequate? Kx= Ky= 1.0, Use LRFD
SOLUTION:
EXAMPLE 6.4
The horizontal beam- column, W8 x 35, shown is subject to the service live loads
shown. This member is laterally braced at its ends, and bending is about the x-
axis. Check for compliance with the AISCS. A992 steel (Fy= 345 MPa and Fu= 450
MPa) is used. Kx= Ky= 1.0. Use LRFD
SOLUTION:
EXAMPLE 6.5
The member shown in the figure is a W12 x 65 of A242 steel (Fy= 345 MPa and
Fu= 450 MPa). First-order analysis were performed with reduced member
stiffnesses. The approximate second-order analysis method of AISC can be used,
making this a direct analysis method. For LRFD, the analysis results for the
controlling factored load combination are 𝑃𝑛𝑡 = 1335 KN, 𝑀𝑛𝑡𝑥 = 184 KN.m, and
𝑀𝑛𝑡𝑦 = 41 KN.m. For ASD, the analysis results for the controlling load combination
are 𝑃𝑛𝑡 = 890 KN, 𝑀𝑛𝑡𝑥 = 122 KN.m, and 𝑀𝑛𝑡𝑦 = 27 KN.m. Use Kx= Ky= 1.0 and
investigate this member for compliance with the AISCS. Use LRFD
SOLUTION:
6.8 DESIGN OF BEAM-COLUMNS
EXAMPLE 6.6
Select a W shape of A992 steel (Fy= 345 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa) for the beam
column shown. This member is part of a braced frame and is subjected to the
service-load axial force and bending moments shown. Bending is about the strong
axis, and Kx= Ky=1.0. Lateral support is provided only at the ends. Assume that B1=
1.0. Use LRFD.
SOLUTION:
EXAMPLE 6.7
A W 12 x 40 has a span length of 7.60 m. Determine the value of bx for the following
cases:
a). Lb= 6.10 m (20 ft), Cb= 1.67
b). Lb= 6.10 m (20 ft), Cb= 1.14
SOLUTION:
EXAMPLE 6.8
A structural member in a braced frame must support the following service loads and moments:
an axial compressive dead load of 111 KN and a live load of 333 KN; a dead load moment of 17
KN.m about the strong axis and a live load moment of 51 KN.m about the strong axis; a dead load
moment of 7 KN.m about the weak axis and a live load moment of 20 KN.m about the weak axis.
The moments occur at one end; the other end is pinned. The member is 4.6 m (15 ft). The frame
analysis was a first- order analysis with reduced member stiffnesses, so the moment amplification
method with Kx= 1.0 can be used. In the direction perpendicular to the frame, Ky= 1.0. There are
no transverse loads on the member. Use A992 steel (Fy= 345 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa) and select a
W 10 shape. Use LRFD.
