a) A series RC circuit is supplied by a 220ℒ0𝑜 , 60𝐻𝑧 supply sources, if the impedance of the
circuit is 10 − 𝑗30 𝑜ℎ𝑚𝑠, determine the
i) Resistance (1)
j) Capacitance (2)
k) Modulus of the impedance (2)
b) A 240𝑣 , 50𝐻𝑧 voltage is applied across a series connected circuit having a resistance of 12Ω,
an inductance of 0.10𝐻 and a capacitance of 120𝜇𝐹, Determine the current flowing in the
circuit (5)

a) Evaluate giving your answer in polar form

Question 6

a) If 𝑣 = 50𝑣 and 𝑧 = (3 + 𝑗4)Ω, calculate the current 𝑖 and give your answer in polar form

b) Given 𝑧1 = 169ℒ600 , and 𝑧2 = 26ℒ900 , calculate 𝑧1 + 𝑧2 leaving your
answer in polar form (2)
c) A series RLC circuit is supplied by 220𝑣, 60𝐻𝑧 supply. If 𝑅 = 10Ω, 𝐿 = 20𝑚𝐻, 𝐶 =
20𝜇𝐹. Calculate the voltage across R, L and C and add the voltages (4)

Question 7

a) If 𝑎 = 𝑖 + 𝑗6 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑏 = 7𝑖 − 𝑗2, determine the scalar product and the angle between the
vectors (3)
b) Using parallelogram rule, determine 𝐹1 + 𝐹2
If 𝐹1 is a force of 4𝑁 which is included at an angle of 450 to 𝐹2 which is a force of 7𝑁, both
forces acting at a point (4)
c) Two vectors are given as 𝑎 = 16𝑖 + 24𝑗 and 𝑏 = 20𝑖 + 15𝑗. Use the scalar product to find
the angle between the two vectors (3)

Question 8

a) If 𝑢 = 2𝑖 − 𝑗 + 3𝑘 , 𝑣 = −4𝑖 + 6𝑗 + 5𝑘 where 𝑢 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑣 are vectors, find the angle


of inclination of the directed line segments (4)

b) Find the resultant of the three forces shown above and it’s direction (6)
Question 9

a) If 𝐴 = 2𝑖 + 3𝑗 , 𝐵 = 6𝑖 − 5𝑗 find
i) 𝐴. 𝐵 (2)
ii) The angle between the 𝐴 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 (3)
b) Determine the magnitude of the vector 𝑎 = 3𝑖 − 2𝑗 + 6𝑘 (2)
c) Distinguish between a scalar and a vector quantity, giving examples (3)

Question 10

a) Find the result of the indicated operation when applied to vectors, given that 𝑎 =
(3, −1,2) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑏 = (1,0, −3)

b) If 𝑣1 = 20𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑡 700 , 𝑣2 = 30 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑡 1600 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑣3 = 25 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑡 2100,
Calculate the resultant of 𝑣1 − 𝑣2 + 𝑣3 (6)
