1. Market trends on products made of bamboo, wood and metal”

Philippine products are in demand not only within the local market but also in
the international market. Locally manufactures products intended for the
global market have unique designs and high quality craftsmanship that
demand higher value and earn profits for the entrepreneurs.

2. Customer’s preference of products.

Products are in the form of home furnishings, table tops, jewelry, decorative
accessories, home accents, kitchen and garden decors. Customers buying
craft vary generally from tourist, collectors, business people, artist or artisans,
people attending conferences and many others.

3
To have marketable and saleable products, artisan/artists and manufacturers
must know their consumers and their preferences in terms of colors, style
size, and quantity. It is also helpful to know their interests and needs. They
must be creative and adopt new design trends for their products to be
competitive in the market.

Craft artisans and entrepreneurs must adopt new marketing strategies to

reach their consumers.
Specific selling strategies include focusing on customer service such as:
a. Offering free delivery
b. Repair and retouch services
c. Special promotions

It is important first to make a study of the business and the industry. The
SWOT analysis maybe considered when thinking of a business.

3. Types/sources of innovative finishing materials, accessories and

designs:
Aside from conducting a survey for the latest trends and customers’
preferences of finished products, you must also know the types of
sources of innovative finishing materials, accessories and designs that
you can apply to your products.

4
These materials are used to beautify, decorate and improve quality of
finished products.

a. Finishing materials
- That are used to smoothen the products before decorating.

1. Varnish
-The name of this finish often is used
generically for a furnish or top coat. It’s very
durable because it contains a higher ratio
of solids. Spar varnish is perfect for outdoor
projects and for raw wood used for exterior
doors and trim o rustic homes. In addition
to protecting the wood, it also provides natural ultraviolet light
protection. Spar varnish is often used on items that will be near or
on the water, like a wood boat, decks, beach chairs, etc. Apply
using a natural bristle brush
2. Shellac
This finish is actually a natural product (it’s
made from combining a secretion from the
female lac bug with a solvent such as
alcohol) that is very safe once dried and
hardened. In addition to adding a protective
coat, it also can add a warm amber color to
wood. It can be affected by heat (white rings will appear under a hot
bowl or mug) or chemicals, so a kitchen table might not be the best
place to use it. Fine furniture items can be greatly enhances with
shellac. Some shellac manufacturers recommend using it as a
protective coat n non-wood items. Apply it with a natural bristle
brush or with a cotton rag.
3. Lacquer
- Lacquer provides the extremely intense
gloss finish often used on any Asian-inspired
or ultramodern furnishings. It is extremely

5
durable and resistant to damage; however, over time it can begin to
discolor and become scratched. Wonder why it’s so smooth? It’s
applied via a sprayer, because it is thinner than the other finishes.
You’ll need a high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) sprayer and a well-
ventilated and spacious workspace to apply it.
4. Polyurethane
Essentially a plastic in the form of a liquid
until it dries. Polyurethane is available in
both water and oil based options and
comes in varieties from satin to glossy.
Water-based polyurethane is popular
because of its low odor and low toxicity.
It goes on clear without adding a slight
color that oil-based versions can, and it
dries much faster. As with shellac, water-
based polyurethane wont’ hold up well to heat and chemicals. It’s
good for bookcases, desks, side table and picture frames –
anything that won’t be exposed to extremes.

Minwax Polycrylic is an example of fortified water based

polyurethane than can stand up a bit better to rough conditions. It
also can go over oil-based finishes and can be applied using
synthetic-bristle brushes, a foam roller or a rag, as can other water-
based polyurethane is a relatively new product that combines the
durability of an oil base with the cleanup of a water base. This
product can actually be used on wooden floors.

Oil bases polyurethane is slightly more durable than water-based,

especially when it comes to handling heat, so a kitchen table is a
good candidate. It adds a slight color tone and will bring out the
richness of wood.
When working the oil-based polyurethane, use a respirator in a
well-ventilated area. Apply using a natural-bristle brush or rag. Oil-
based takes much longer to dry and cure than water-based, so plan
accordingly and follow the manufacturer’s directions.

Both oil and water-based polyurethane can be applied to

latex/acrylic paint; however, oil-based polyurethane will create a
yellow or amber hue, especially to light colors. To add durability
without affected color, use a water-based finish.

6
You can also purchase polyurethane in a spray can which makes it
a bit easier to apply, especially on large projects. Wipe-on
polyurethane is used primarily by woodworkers who want to create
a “hand-rubbed” finish on special projects. These two run the
extreme of ease of use, but produce excellent results.

These materials are used to beautify, decorate, and improve quality of

finished products.

b. Colored paper twines and ribbon cloth

-are sued in decorating and wrapping products.

c. Beads and Charms

-are small accessories of different colors used to make products attractive.

d. Abaca and sinamay fibers

-are paper-thin locally made materials used for wrapping or packing
purposes

7
4. Processes in enhancing/decorating finished products:

-These were the processes that were discussed on the previous topics which
includes the following:

a. Woodturning
b. Hand Curving
Other methods:
c. Pyrography
d. Flocking a. Engraving
e. Inlaying b. Etching
f. Gilding c. Texturing or embossing
g. Staining d. Meta enhancing media
h. Painting

Though it is said that Filipinos are best known for their creative minds and hands,
new trends in the market, and emerging strategies and techniques must be explored
to allow local products to compete in the global market.
