2. My Actual SPM Essay

a) Intro
She had used the last of her savings to get to the cooking competition in the big city and was
exhilarated about it. Coming from an impoverished family, it will be the very first time she step foot
in a big city. Getting to the city was no easy feat for her, her house was located in a very remote rural
area, surrounded by nothing but thick greeneries.

b) Journey to the City

Fast forward a few days later and a lot of asking around, she eventually managed to board a train to
the city. “Ah, finally I’m on the train,” she sighed while eyeing around for a seat to provide her
comfort. However, luck was not in her favor as she boarded the train during peak time, having no
choice but to squeeze herself in the crowd like a tinned sardine. Few moments elapsed, and her luck
turned 180 degree, a free space caught her eye. Knowing that opportunity doesn’t come knocking at
the door twice, she quickly picked up her hefty belongings, hugging it in her arms, and went to the
empty spot, pushing herself against the crowd while murmuring “sorry” to everyone she came in
contact with. The seat was not fully vacant, she had no choice but to sandwiched herself in between
two lads. One of which was a young boy with an earphone on, jamming away with the music, while
another one was an older teen browsing through a newspaper. Boredom got the best of her, so she
took a peek at the newspaper the teen was reading, and something familiar came in sight. She noticed
an advertisement of a cooking competition, and soon realized that it was the cooking competition she
ought to join. Chills went down her spine, she was excited yet nervous for the cooking competition.
Doubtful thoughts flooded her mind, “Am I good enough? What if the judges don’t like my cooking?
Can I really win this?”

c) Cooking Competition Started

“Ting”, the sound of the bell surrounded the room, signaling the start of the cooking competition. She
was torn between two choices, indecisive for what to cook for the judges, should I go for what
everyone else is cooking or should I shoot a shot and make my own special dish. After deliberation,
she firmly decides to play it safe, and went for the dish everyone is making, an exquisite chicken dish.
She has always had a flair for cooking, even labelling it as her favorite pastime. “First, I will chop the
onions, then mince up the garlic into smaller bits, after that I’ll…” the steps for the recipe kept
swirling in her head, acting as a constant reminder for herself to prevent any unsolicited catastrophe.
“Step one done, step two done,… step fifteen done. Yes! All is done except for…” she uttered in a
low voice to herself while preparing for the final step, that is to pan fry the chicken. “Ah, pan frying?
Easy-peasy!” she thought. As someone who have had immense experience in cooking, pan frying
should be a piece of cake. She took out a piece of chicken breast that radiated its freshness on the
outside, and undeniable tenderness in the inside. She skillfully seasoned the chicken breast with
pinches of salt and pepper, then proceeded to place it gently on the frying pan. Acknowledging that
her final step of cooking had been carried out, her thoughts abruptly shifted away from the cooking,
and she started daydreaming the scene of her winning the competition.

d) The Plot Twist

Her daydream came to a halt when she was snapped out of it by an unforeseen smell. Her sensitive
nose picked up something peculiar yet familiar, something it had taken in before. “Wait, isn’t this the
smell of something that is burnt?” she monologized to herself, before realization struck her dreamy
mind. She was thrown for a loop when she finally realized that she had overcook her chicken and
burnt it. Everything went south from that point. “Oh no, oh no, OH NO!” she let out a disappointed
remark as anxiety started to engulf her. Her mind was racing, uneasy and uncertain how to react. She
took a few deep breathes, pulling herself together in the process. “It’s okay Jamilah, you’ve sacrificed
so much for this, you wouldn’t come so far just to easily give up!” she assured herself as confidence
and optimism surged her entire body to fight off the negativity thoughts. In a matter of seconds, she
managed to overcome this chaotic ordeal and came out with plan B! Considering the sparsity of time,
the sole option she has on the table is to prepare the special sandwich that her dear mother had taught
her.
