Personality Disorders: Case Studies

Read each case study carefully and decide which of the following personality disorders best matches the description:
paranoid PD, schizoid PD, schizotypal PD, antisocial PD, borderline PD, histrionic PD, narcissistic PD, avoidant PD,
dependent PD, or obsessive-compulsive PD.

1. Linus has a history of struggling with intense emotions, reckless behavior, and destructive relationship patterns.
He admits to acquiring heavy debt due to gambling and periods of drug abuse. Last year he had his driver's license
revoked due to excessive speeding tickets. Linus’s long-term, on-again-off-again girlfriend says he has
unpredictable moods, frequent emotional outbursts, an intense fear her leaving him, and has even threatened
suicide to convince her to stay with him.

2. Christopher’s parents are concerned with his constant lying, insensitivity, aggression, and defiance. Christopher
taunts and tortures his younger siblings, and expresses very little remorse afterward. He frequently gets into fights
at school, has a history of truancy, and has vandalized school property. He refuses to acknowledge that his actions
are wrong or that they have hurt others.

3. Yaro is excessively withdrawn and detached. He has trouble keeping a job because he has difficulty interacting
with people, is indifferent to praise or criticism, and spends most of his time on an online role-playing game.
Family members describe him as incredibly solitary, cold, and aloof. They say he has no close friends, and has
even distanced himself from the family.

4. Lisle must continually be the center of attention or she falls into a state of depression. Her friends describe her as
manipulative, emotional, and very dramatic. She was fired from her last job because she made inappropriate
advances toward another employee. In fact, she often says and does inappropriate things, especially when it earns
the attention of others.

5. Monika is overly shy and concerned with rejection. She is hesitant to form relationships because she fears being
ridiculed or humiliated, and as a result, is very socially isolated. She struggles with workplace tasks that require
social contact. She frequently feels unappealing or inferior to others, so she avoids making connections with
people.

6. Tianna has an exaggerated sense of superiority. She has a deep and unreasonable need for admiration, so much so
that she often lies about her achievements. She has trouble forming relationships because she thinks people are
envious of her or thinks they are too ordinary to be associated with. Tianna requires constant compliments and
responds to any type of criticism with extreme defensiveness and even rage. People in Tianna’s life often feel
taken advantage of or treated like objects.

7. Mani has a history of unhealthy long-term relationships. He has had several emotionally abusive partners. Mani is
very passive, overly clingy, and needs constant reassurance. When a relationship ends, he is completely
devastated, but typically moves on very quickly. Mani is reluctant to take on any adult responsibilities and relies
on others to make important decisions for him.

8. Kevin is negative, jealous, and suspicious. He has difficulty connecting with others because he distrusts their
intentions. He believes his coworkers are all out to get him and often overreacts to even the most innocent of
comments. Kevin’s ex-girlfriend has a restraining order against him because he installed a tracking device on her
car and engaged in angry and hostile behavior toward her. When they were together, he constantly accused her of
cheating on him.

9. Ernest is excessively odd and has strange beliefs, including a belief that he has the power of telepathy. He recently
lost his job due to a pattern of abnormal behavior, which included accusing one of his coworkers of
communicating with the devil. Ernest’s family says he is uncomfortable with intimacy and does not have any
close friends due to his distrust of others.

10. Angelika has an overwhelming desire for structure and order. She abides by a rigid set of rules and principles and
gets upset if others do not follow these same guidelines. She spends long hours at work; however, at her last
performance review, Angelika’s boss was concerned about her inability to delegate or finish tasks on time.
Angelika says it is because she wants to make sure everything is perfect.
