- Work in pairs, discuss the following question.
- What are your favorite apps? Tell your partner what they are used for and how to use them.

Now, read and listen to the conversation. Listen to Ariana and Mike talking about hot apps.
Mike: Which are your favorite apps?
Ariana: I love Instagram, Twitter and Spotify. Which are yours?
Mike: I like Facebook, Whatsapp, Snapchat and Line. I would like to install Instagram. What is it for and
how can I use it?
Ariana: Instagram was created as a social app used for sharing photos and videos. First, download the
Instagram app from the App Store or Google Play Store. Then, sign up by filling the form with your
phone number or e-mail, username and password.
Mike: I am going to do it right away. How can I upload photos? I want to share the one we took during
the break.
Ariana: The + icon was created to upload photos and videos. So, first click on it. Next, look through
your photos and video library or take a new one. Once you have it, you can edit it; add filters, text,
emoticons and hashtags. By the way, the filters are really cool! The icon edit was designed to adjust
contrast, brightness, warmth and more.
Mike: That is great! Can I add a tag?
Ariana: Yes, you can! If you want to, you can add location, too. Finally, once is it ready to post, click on
share.
Mike: Thanks, Ariana. Look! I shared my first photo!

GRAMMAR

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS

[has/have + been + verb “ing”]


We use the Present Perfect Continuous to show that something started in the past and has
continued up until now. "For five minutes," "for two weeks," and "since Tuesday" are all durations
which can be used with the Present Perfect Continuous.
Examples:
• They have been talking for the last hour.
• She has been working at that company for three years.

Apps were created for multiple purposes. They can entertain, teach, help, socialize and organize
everyday activities. Look at the following examples of apps.

Social Apps: Social apps allow interaction among users by establishing and maintaining connection.
Viber was made to make calls, text and send video messages to another Viber user. It was designed to
work on mobiles and computers.
Hangouts was made to allow users to chat individually and in groups. It was designed to permit text,
voice messages and video chat.
Interactive Apps: Interactive apps allow an exchange of information between apps and users.
Duolingo was created to learn English quickly by spending twenty minutes or more a day. The lessons
were designed to adapt to each user’s learning style.
ELSA was made to improve English fluency. It was designed to pronounce common idioms, American
expressions and everyday conversation in English.
Multimedia Apps: They were designed to stream videos, music, photos and others.
AllCast was created to stream videos from a phone to a TV. It was created to support smart TVs, Apple
TV, and Xbox One.
Kodi was designed to connect videos, music and photos through HDMI. It was created as a home
entertainment app.

Cyber bullying
Cyber bullying refers to the use of digital media to make another person feel ashamed, sad or afraid.
Examples of cyber bullying include posting shameful information on any social media or sending photos,
messages or videos in order to hurt people and create online rumors. Most of the time, cyber bullying
comes repeatedly from the same person or group of people.

How can you prevent cyber bullying?

1. _______________________________________: Be careful with the information you share on social


media and internet in general. Never share personal information such as passwords, addresses, personal
pictures and videos. Keep your personal information to yourself.

other people and demand the same from others. Be kind and use the right words.

Nick and Vivi are talking about how their future is in their hands.

Nick: Mahatma Gandhi said: “The future depends on what we do in the present.” What do you think it
means?
Vivi: I read that phrase this morning because I think that phrase has been going viral. I think that if we
make good decisions in the present, our future will be brighter. What do you think?
Nick: I agree! We are in the right time and moment to start building the future we want. It is even time to
break new ground with innovative ideas.
Vivi: So, how is our future in our hands?
Nick: We are the only ones who can decide where we want to get to and what we need to do to reach our
goals. It is time to pull the plug on bad habits!

Nick: Well, in my case, I want to become a software engineer. So, I need to finish high school. After that, I
want to get a degree in computer science. Then, I need to start programming to get a job. What I need to

Vivi: We are on the same wavelength! I like technology a lot! I want to be a graphic designer. I have been
looking for information. Once I graduate from high school, I am going to look for a part time job. I want to
get a degree in graphic design and a related job as soon as possible. Perhaps, I am going to complement
my studies with a web developer degree.
