1.1Introduction
Education is one of the key determinant features to guarantee development and improvements
in human wellbeing. Above and beyond, as widespread economic competition grows sharper,
education becomes an important source of competitive advantage and a way for countries to
attract jobs and investment (Kahsay, 2012). So, still education appears to be one of the key
determinants of lifetime earnings. Consequently, Countries therefore normally see raising
educational attainment as a way of tackling poverty and deprivation (Merriam, 2009).
Subsequently, it is quite sure that education is widely accepted as a leading instrument for
promoting economic growth and generally enhancing development in the world. Quality is a
key concern of academia across the globe and several efforts in multiple directions are made
by the administrators and academicians to induce quality components into the teaching
learning situation (Zaki and Rashidi,2013). An effective and efficient quality higher
education system is vital for sustainable economic development in developing countries like
Ethiopia. Such a system, among others, improves the education and training of future
employees, harnesses future leaders, fosters an enabling learning environment, and enriches
the academic and intellectual landscape. The focus on higher education in developing nations
such as Ethiopia can bear fruit if education is delivered by emphasizing quality over quantity
in the delivery of education (World Bank, 2009).
Indigenous knowledge is the local knowledge that is unique to a given culture or society. This
knowledge contrasts with the international knowledge system generated by universities,
research institutions and private firms. Indigenous knowledge refers to the understandings,
skills and philosophies developed by societies with long histories of interaction with their
natural surroundings. In the past, very many studies were conducted on various issues of the
system of education including its curriculum. Lots of changes have been introduced on the
basis of the outcomes recommendations of the studies and changes in political governance
and policies .However, as laid bare by studies conducted later, the curriculum developed to
redress the limitations of the past has not been able to address them properly and the system
continued to suffer from the same problems It came to solve chief of which are quality and
relevance(EGECF,2020)
3
These two words, “quality” and “education” are commonly and carelessly used in every day
discussion especially among leaders and business men and women. Every leader promises
to provide the populace with quality education.
Conceptually, education has been taken as an investment in the development of human, social
and economic capital. Human resource development means the process of increasing the
knowledge, skills, attitudes potentials and capacity of the people. The assumption of viewing
education as investment in human capital development is that education improves the
knowledge and the skill levels, and there by the productivity of individuals. The higher the
level of education an individual attains, the greater will be the individual’s contribution to the
economy. Governments see education as a vehicle for providing their citizens with the
necessary knowledge, skills, and values believed to be necessary for them to make informed
decisions and to help them actively to participate in national development endeavors. It is a
vital instrument in the creation of a modern economy. By generating skilled manpower,
education creates the scientific and technological bases for economic growth and
development. No country has scored sound economic growth without significant
development in education.
Education has a vital role to play in Ethiopia. It provides the young people of Ethiopia with
the competencies which they need to undertake further study and to take their place within
the working community. It is through education that each person is able to realize their full
potential in life and contribute to the development of their country. Education is the key to
sustaining Ethiopian development and it is through education that the country will be
transformed in to acknowledge based society embracing new technology and using it to solve
the problems of today and tomorrow. Today and tomorrows young people in Ethiopia will be:
literate and numerate, creative thinkers, problem solvers, active innovators, IT literate,
informed decision makers, democrat and to learn and able to adapt to a changing world. They
will also be members of a well –balanced, productive, responsible and accountable society,
which will adapt to change while retaining its cultural diversity and identity.
Hence, the government of Ethiopia giving more emphasis for man-power training and has
declared education policy which invites investors to intervene in the implementation of
educational program. It is through this intervention program that private project Ethiopian
indigenous knowledge private school proposal are prepared to contribute country’s overall
economic development by providing better quality education to the pupil in Bahir Dar City
administration.

Dar city starting from preprimary(kindergarten) up to elementary school(1-8) by
collaborating with Amhara education bureau which enabled us to exploit and use
indigenous knowledge books wrote and printed in native Geez language.
2. Literature Review
Today, education has become one of the greatest enterprises and has been defined in
different ways by different people in different parts of the world and occupations. A
renowned scholar, R.S. Peters defined education as the transmission of what is worthwhile to
those who are committed to it – be they children or adults. Another educator and philosopher,
Brameld saw education as “the greatest power man has not yet subdued. Okpala in his
lecture stressed that education is a process of tendering, nurturing and nursing the individual
so as to make him a full fledged member of the society to which he belongs. Indigenous
knowledge refers to the understandings, skills and philosophies developed by societies with
long histories of interaction with their natural surroundings .This Knowledge is integral to a
cultural complex that also encompass languages systems of classification resource us
practices, social interactions, ritual and spirituality. This unique ways of knowing are
important facet soft the world’s cultural diversity, and provide a foundation for locally-
appropriate sustainable development ( UNESCO, 2023) .
Ethiopia is a country of ancient civilization and thousands of years of literary history with its
own alphabet, numerals, calendar, writings and so on. Stone inscriptions, book of the Old
Testament, the earliest New Testament, hagiographies, royal chronicles and various religious
manuscripts are found written in Ethiopic language. The country is one of the classical
countries those that have their own alphabet and writing system.
Using this indigenous alphabet, Ethiopians have developed their own writing tradition and
produced many works of literature, which has dated back to hundreds of years. Accordingly,
Ethiopia is a country with plenty of classical magnificently enlightened manuscripts and
literature, art, architecture, and music as well. Ethiopia has a centuries-long tradition of
written literature. Inscriptions in stone go back to pre-Christian times, after Christianity,
8
books started to be written Dawit G (2019). The church of Ethiopia, in its various
international innovations, has prior role.
During the period 1500 to 1632, an age of crisis as to Getachew, while the Christian Empire
was invaded by Gragn, three scholars Enbaqom, Arka Sellus and Bahrey made names in the
field of Ge’ez literature. A number of books were indigenously written and translated during
this period, by the above named scholars and others. In addition to the books he helped to be
translated into Ge’ez, such as the other two monastic books, the Mar Yishaq, and the Arägawi
Mänfasawi, Enbaqom wrote a book entitled Anqasä Amin.
Ethiopian orthodox monasteries and churches, is the storehouse of a huge anthology of
important old manuscripts, various ancient documents and knowledge. Before the arrival and
flourishing of Christianity, Ethiopians had a habit of writing on stones and other hard
materials. After the introduction of Christianity the attention was turned to write on soft
materials especially for religious purpose. “In the 3rd and 4th century a variety of hand
writing materials like stone, metal, clay and wood were used. Introduction of soft writing
material was related to the coming of the nine saints to Ethiopia in the 6th century.
Ge’ez Literature
Ethiopian written literature up to mid-19th c was predominantly Ge’ez Christian literature.
Based on the question of originality this literature can be classified in to three categories. The
first are translations from other languages, Second, neither translation nor original i.e.
adaptations, and third, entirely indigenous. In the 3rd and 4th century a variety of hand
writing materials like stone, metal, clay and wood were used. Ge’ez has a number of ancient
inscriptions written on stone by Aksum kings in the 4th century A.D, and manuscripts that
are part of ancient and medieval literature. Introduction of soft writing material were related
to the coming of the nine saints to Ethiopia in the second half of the 6th century. It is believed
that in order to translate the holy Bible into Ethiopic, the saints required a reliable and
abundant writing material, and they started manufacturing of parchment/vellum. The
language of the literary works, “till it was replaced by Amharic during the second half of the
19th c. being the main medium for writing and documentation, was classical Ge’ez, and a
vast body of literary works have been accumulated in it starting from the 5th/4th c .
In Ge’ez, quite a good number of indigenous original manuscripts have been written. These
include many historical, theological, philosophical and political works. In addition to this,
some other non-Christian works were written; the writings of Zara Yaqob are examples”
(Harden 1926:19). Most Ge’ez literature is religious but some texts also cover a range of
9
secular subjects among which are astrology, philosophy, medicine, history, law, mathematics,
and royal chronicles.
Quality education entails the following aspects; learning resources, technology, program
enrolled, modules done, lecturing methodology, attachments, qualifications, co-curricular
activities, performance awards, students and lecturers perspective in the institution operating
management also their opinions and appraisal toward education (Hammond, 2013).
For one to claim that he is offering quality education to the populace, he must ensure the
presence of the following conditions:
Learners who are healthy, well nourished and ready to participate and learn, and
supported in learning by their families and communities;
Environments that are healthy, safe, protective and gender
Sensitive, and provide adequate resources and facilities;
Content that is reflected in relevant curricular and materials for the acquisition of
basic skills, especially in the areas of literacy, numeracy and skills for life
andknowledgeinsuch areas as gender, health, nutrition HIV/AIDS preventive and peac
e.
Processes through which trained teachers use child centered teaching approaches in
well managed classrooms and schools and skillful assessment to facilitate learning
and reduce disparities.
Outcomes that encompass knowledge, skills, and attitudes, and are linked to national
goals for education and positive participation in society.
3. Justification
In Bahir Dar City the need for education has increased due to population increase and
modernization. 2007 E.C Education Department office report indicated that, in the town
there are 42/5 governmental and 37private) preprimary, and 61(37 governmental and 24
Private) primary schools. In these schools 8,149 children in preprimary and 50,993 students
in primary level were registered and followed their teaching. The reports also indicated that
10
50.06% and 99.9% were educational participation rates in preprimary and primary school
respectively. The dropped out rat in primary school dropped out rate was 1.5% and that of
repetition rate was 8.17%. This showed that due to unfavorable conditions the educational
wastage is not simple. Recently, the area of the town is widen and the people become
constructed their residence (house) far from the school. Especially Ginbot-20 and Hidar-11
sub city the population is increased from time to time and the numbers of schools not cope
up the population increment or not have adequate supply of school. To avoid these problems
and to promote modernization in the town applying appropriate technology based education
is crucial issue. Developed and developing country experiences indicated that it is difficult
to fulfill all educational programs only by government agency. Hence, societal and private
investors ’participation is essential and encouraged. That is why private school project is
initiating and interested to intervene in Bahir Dar town at particularly Ginhbot-20 sub city.
Be constructed based on the standard. School furniture and other necessary materials will
fulfill.
Make students ethical, morally strong, skilled, competent both with indigenous and
modern knowledge and healthy.
Give education for 30, 50, and 40 students per class in kindergarten /preprimary/, primary
first cycle (1-4) and primary second cycle (5-8) school respectively.
Make students profitable citizens and provides of the country.
Make students acquired with recent technology.
Use their head, heart and hand to solve the problem and create job opportunities.

12.CONCLUSIONS
Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world and for self-
enlightenment. This is so because quality education equips one with capability to interpret
things rightly and applying the gathered information in real life scenarios. Quality education
entails the following aspects; learning resources, technology, program enrolled, modules
done, lecturing methodology, attachments, qualifications, co-curricular activities,
performance awards, students and lecturers perspective in the institution operating
management also their opinions and appraisal toward education (Hammond, 2013).
Generally, education can be regarded as an activity which goes on in a society and its aims
and methods depend on the nature of the society in which it operates; so, education is
sensitive to time, place and circumstances. This is because it is constantly changing, adapting
itself to new demands. Ethiopia is a country of ancient civilization and thousands of years of
literary history with its own alphabet, numerals, calendar, writings and so on. Stone
inscriptions, book of the Old Testament, the earliest New Testament, hagiographies, royal
chronicles and various religious manuscripts are found written in Ethiopic language. The
country is one of the classical countries those that have their own alphabet and writing
system. Using this indigenous alphabet, Ethiopians have developed their own writing
tradition and produced many works of literature, which has dated back to hundreds of years.
Accordingly, Ethiopia is a country with plenty of classical magnificently enlightened
manuscripts and literature, art, architecture, and music as well (Dawit G 2019). The provision
of this private preprimary and primary school will established in Bahir Dar city where the
place fulfill the standard of good school site for better and successful outcome of learning and
teaching methodology. The major of this is to create internationally very competent,
innovators and problem solvers students with indigenous and modern science education. To
restore the ancient civilized and vanguard Ethiopian who built historical heritages like
23
Lalibela church, Axum and Fasiledes memorials. Indigenous knowledge is the local
knowledge that is unique to a given culture or society. The overall school compound will
cover about 1.5-2ha of launching area. The gross financial budget required for the project
work is Ethiopian birr. 211,812,305.7925 The school learning and teaching system will work
by hiring experienced teachers with indigenous knowledge and modern science who can
achieve the expected and needed goal/objective education bureau.
