Diode current equation

With the help of solid state Physics the diode current equation is given by

applied voltage V positive in case of forward bias and negative in case of reverse bias
ETA constant1 for Germanium 2 for Silicon

diode resistance

Ideal diode offers zero resistance in forward bias condition and infinite resistance in Reverse
bias condition but practical diode does not behave ideally it means practical diode offer very
small resistance in forward bias condition and very large resistance in Reverse bias condition.

The diode resistance can be divided into two parts

forward resistance the resistance offered by a diode in forward bias condition is called forward
resistance it may be of two type DC forward resistance, AC forward resistance .

static or DC forward resistance

this is the resistance offered by diode through DC in forward bias condition it is also known as
static resistance.it is defined as ratio of voltage applied across the diode terminal to the current
that flows across the diode .Due to the supplied voltage at a particular point on the forward
characteristic of diode the forward resistance r is calculated as

Rf = OA/OB
AC forward resistance or dynamic resistance

the resistance offered by diode through AC in forward bias condition is called AC forward
resistance.it is also known as dynamic resistance .

it is defined as the ratio of change in voltage applied across diode terminal to the change in
current due to applied voltage at a particular point on forward characteristic of diode .

reverse resistance

the resistance offered by a diode in Reverse bias condition is known as rivers resistance.its value
is very large as compared to forward resistance.
Diode capacitance

diode offers two type of capacitance one is forward and other is revers bias .they are of two type.

• Diffusion capacitance (CD)

• Transition capacitance (CT)

Diffusion or storage capacitance (forward bias)

The capacitance which exist in forward bias condition is called storage or diffusion capacitance it
is called diffusion capacitance to account for time delay in moving charges across the junction by
diffusion process. Mathematically it is given as CD = q/v =A €/W =IFᶩ /VT η

Tau is carrier mean life time, I is diode forward current, CD is diffusion or storage current
depletion or Transition capacitance(reverse bias)

when PN junction is formed, there exist a depletion layer at the junction of P and N region
behave as two plates of parallel plate capacitor and they are separated by dielectric medium
(depletion region) then the capacitance of this capacitor is given by

CT = K/√ V

Transition capacitance, K constant 1Ge,2 Si ,V is voltage across diode

Use in varacter diode, CD ¿ CT
