Question (1):
If a deposit at a site happens to be a saturated over consolidated clay with a value of qc = 20 MN/m2,
determine the unconfirmed compressive strength of clay given p0 = 95 kN/m2.

Question (2):
A vane shear test was conducted in saturated clay. The height and diameter of the vane were 4 in. and
2 in., respectively. During the test the maximum torque applied was 36 lb.ft, it's required to
determine the undrained shear strength of the clay.

Question (3):
In a deposit of normally consolidated soil, a cone penetration test was conducted. For the following
results, it's required to estimate the average peak friction angle (f) of the soil. (Assuming the dry unit
weight of sand to be 16 kN/m3).

Point Resistance of Cone, qc

Depth (m)
(MN/m2)
1.5 2.06
3.0 4.23
4.5 6.01
6.0 8.18
7.5 9.97
9.0 12.42

Question (4):
In the soil profile shown in figure, if the cone
penetration resistance (qc) at A (as determined by
an electric friction-cone penetrometer) is 0.5 MN/m2.,
it’s required to estimate the undrained cohesion (cu).
