ADEOLA AWODIRE
INTRODUCTION
This book was born out of my commitment to the career starter boot camp that I had
launched in January this year 2024. Life got so busy that it was difficult to keep up with the
time we had chosen for our weekly meetings. Hence the need for this book.

This book details everything that you need to know about getting started in your career, the
soft skills, hard skills, the mindset and the tools that are necessary for you to know in order
to grow in your career.

ire
If you are reading this book then it means that you got it because you were part of the
career starter boot camp or you paid for this guide or somehow you got it from me as a gift
perhaps in one of my free classes or someone who bought it or got it from the Career
starter boot camp give it to you. whichever way you got it this is a book that you must read

od
from cover to cover.

If you have this book and you have not read it, then you are sitting on gunpowder.

Understanding the Modern Job Market
A few decades ago, becoming a medical doctor, lawyer, aeronautical engineer, civil
engineer or a Computer scientist was considered a great achievement, especially in Africa.
So, we grew up with our parents and loved ones selling us the idea that these were the
most valid professions one could dream of becoming.

Well, these professions are still very much valid as their importance is weaved into the very
fabric of our existence here on planet earth. Even the most civilised countries still need

ire
medical doctors, nurses, teachers and lawyers.

But is that all there is to it? The civilization of those days now pales in comparison to the
civilization of this day as many new professions are springing up. Growing up, I never knew

od
about anything called Tech or Product Management or Cybersecurity or even being a CEO
of a company. All I wanted to be was either a doctor or pharmacist, but God had other
plans, lol!
Aw
Gone are the days of thinking linear paths (or in straight lines), from finishing studies at the
university to using that certificate to getting a job that would serve you the rest of your
days. Even Medical doctors are now content creators! If you don’t know Aproko Doctor on
Instagram then I should be asking you where you have been all your life! Another example
is Medical doctor turned Brand Expert, Drfoy. You can look them up to satisfy your curiosity.
la

People now work remotely, or in highly flexible work environments, people now prioritise
eo

mental health issues and gender-equality issues much more than before. You would be
making a grave mistake entering into the career world blind.

The tremendous and groundbreaking discoveries in technology keep pushing our

Ad

boundaries forward and opening up new possibilities in the workspace. The Modern Job
Market has taken a completely different turn from what our elders used to know and it’s
very important to stay abreast.

Anyone who will succeed in their career now and in the years to come MUST be ready for
change, information and readiness to take action. The fact that you are reading this is proof
that you are indeed ready for change, information and readiness to take action.

For this, dear friend, I celebrate you!

Seven (7) things to pay attention to as you step into career

1. Change: this change is driven by Technology. Over the years, roles and professions
have evolved and improved through technology. Anyone who doesn’t improve in
technology usage will remain stagnant. Let me also say, at this point, that it is not
until you have become a website developer or programmer before you are
considered tech-savvy. We will get into that soon.
2. Online Presence: Your online presence and digital footprint are now one of the
effective ways that companies decide who they will hire or not. What you do or do
not do online is a determining factor in your career success.
3. Soft Skills: As much as employers value hard/technical skills, they value soft skills

ire
just as much. Your Emotional Intelligence and behavioural patterns must be well
developed to navigate the career world successfully.
4. Networking: This is one of the most misunderstood concepts in career. Many people

od
see the results of networking as immediate, whereas, the results could come later or
even indirectly. The point of networking should always be to build a rich
people-bank that truly recognises the value you can offer them and vice-versa.
Networking shouldn’t always be about you taking from people, it should be about
Aw
you giving your value in unforgettable ways.
5. Remote revolution: The pandemic in 2020 hit a lot of sectors and crashed markets
all over the world. Businesses collapsed while some struggled to stay afloat and
some flourished. The ability of the whole world to transition to working-from-home
has been truly remarkable. The age-long tradition of leaving home to a “place of
la

work” has begun to fade. Remote work by many seems to be more productive and
beneficial. Therefore, learning the ethics of remote working cannot be
eo

overemphasised.
6. Resilience: My dad used to tell my siblings and I something growing up, “when the
going gets tough, the tough get going”. Resilience is the ability to bounce back
after facing setbacks. Don’t give up, no matter how hard things may get.
Ad

7. Work-life balance: Work-life balance as the name implies means finding a balance
between work and your personal life. Making sure none of them suffers is a strength
that you must have to succeed in your career.
The Importance of Continuous Learning and Adaptability

The Importance of learning and adaptability cannot be overemphasised. Show me someone

who is always learning and I will show you that he/she is very much likely to succeed in
career and other areas of life.

The true mark of success is seen in constantly improving yourself, making sure that you’re a
better version of yourself than you were yesterday. Reading books, taking professional
courses, watching videos on YouTube, taking affordable courses on Udemy, Domestika,
LinkedIn Learning and other learning platforms empowers you for positive change.

ire
Your ability to adapt to changing environments is also a huge test of career success. Do you
cave under pressure? Are you quick to give up? Are you too lazy to stretch yourself and do
hard things? If you answered yes to any of these, you may need to rethink how much you

od
really want to succeed.

Success is not for the weak!

Aw
Keep learning, keep growing, keep building yourself in strength and capacity. When you get
tired, rest and get up again!

Self-Assessment and Goal Setting
This may sound cliche but there has never been a time to know your strengths and
weaknesses like now! In this day and age of so much innovation, anything is possible!
Identifying Your Strengths and Weaknesses will help you be rightly positioned for all the
opportunities flying around.

The seemingly unimportant skills that you have may be the turning point you need. You
need to explore different things that you’re capable of doing and find that one strength you

ire
have that can be monetised either in your career or in business.

Set realistic goals for yourself.

Essential soft skills for career starters
According to LinkedIn’s 2019 Global Talent Trends report, 89% of recruiters say when a new
hire doesn’t work out, it usually comes down to a lack of soft skills.

Many employers and clients prioritize soft skills when they are hiring someone. The
authors of The Future of Work 2021: Global Hiring Outlook noted that when
employers are asked for the top skills they want in employees, they most often list
soft skills including dependability, communication, flexibility, and problem-solving.

While it certainly would be challenging to find a role without any technical abilities,

ire
research shows that soft skills give people “career durability.” In other words,
technical skills might land you a role or contract, but soft skills make it much more
likely you'll keep it and go further, faster.

success. This chapter will guide you on crafting a compelling resume and cover

letter, along with harnessing the power of social media to build a personal brand that

sets you apart.

Crafting a Winning Resume and Cover Letter

ire
Your resume and cover letter are often the first impression you make on a potential

employer. Here's how to create documents that showcase your skills and experience

od
effectively:

● Resume:
Aw
○ Content:

■ Tailor your resume to each job application. Highlight the skills

la

and experiences most relevant to the specific position.

■ Use a clear and concise format with easy-to-read fonts and

eo

headings.

■ Include quantifiable achievements to demonstrate the impact of

your work.
Ad

■ Proofread meticulously for any typos or grammatical errors.

○ Structure:

■ Contact Information: Include your full name, phone number,

professional email address, and LinkedIn profile URL (very

important).

■ Summary Statement: Briefly introduce yourself and your value

proposition.
■ Work Experience: List your work history in reverse

chronological order. For each position, mention the company

name, job title, dates of employment, and key responsibilities

using keywords from the job description.

■ Education & Training: List your educational qualifications,

including degrees, diplomas, and relevant coursework.

company. Briefly explain why you are interested in the position

Aw
and how your skills align with their needs.

resume that demonstrate your suitability for the role.

■ Conclude with a call to action, expressing your interest in an

la

interview.
eo

○ Structure:

information.

letter to the hiring manager by name, if possible.

■ Introduction: Briefly introduce yourself and state the position

you are applying for.

Landing the Job and Getting Paid Your Worth

Getting a job offer is exciting! But before you celebrate, remember: salary negotiation is

often expected. Here's how to navigate it:

● Show Your Enthusiasm: Express how thrilled you are about the position and your
confidence in excelling.

● Don't Settle Right Away: While some roles have fixed salaries, many companies

ire
anticipate negotiation and offer lower than their maximum.

● Aim High (within Reason): Research average salaries for similar positions and
experience (Glassdoor is a helpful resource). When discussing compensation, you

od
can say: "Based on my research and other interviews, the typical salary range is $[X]

to $[Y]. I'm very interested in this opportunity, and I hope we can reach a competitive

offer." Sometimes, the interviewer may ask what your current/previous salary is.
Aw
Never tell them your exact salary as this could influence what they offer you, instead

give them a range. If you earn 300k, tell them you earn between 200k to 400k

● Highlight Your Value: Remind them of your skills and experience - after all, that's
why they want you!
la

● Think Beyond Salary: Consider negotiating vacation days, work-from-home options,

eo

or other benefits that matter to you.

By following these tips, you can approach salary negotiation with confidence and secure a

compensation package that reflects your worth.

This chapter will guide you on navigating workplace etiquette and cultural nuances.

Understanding and Adapting to Workplace Culture

ire
Every workplace has its own unique culture, which encompasses the shared values,

beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that influence how employees interact and work

od
together. Here's how to navigate this dynamic environment:

● Observe and Learn: Pay attention to how colleagues dress, communicate,

Aw
and interact with each other. Take note of unspoken rules and how meetings

are conducted.

● Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask your colleagues or supervisor about the
la

company culture and any unwritten rules.

● Be Open-Minded: Approach the culture with a willingness to learn and adapt.

eo

While maintaining your own values, be flexible and respectful of established

norms.
