1. COMFORTABLE CARRYING CAPACITY (CCC)

Comfortable Carrying Capacity is the optimum number of guests accommodated by a


mountain facility, at any one time, which affords a high-quality recreational experience and
helps ensure sound stewardship of the land. It is a planning parameter that is used as the basis
for designing a balanced resort development.

CCC for each lift is calculated using the following formula.

CCC = Vertical Rise * Hourly Capacity * Operating Hours * Loading Efficiency


Weighted Vertical Demand

Vertical demand is the amount of vertical that the average skier is anticipated to ski over the
course of a day based on their ability level as outlined below, calculated as a function of the
skiers’ round-trip interval on each lift. When applied to lifts, it is weighted by the percentage of
ability terrain served.

Beginner 1,000 m
Novice 2,500 m
Low Intermediate 4,000 m
Intermediate 5,000 m
Advanced Intermediate 8,500 m
Expert 10,000 m
Weighted vertical demand is a function of the access role or access reduction of a lift where a
percentage of riders are using the lift to access other facilities or lifts rather than the terrain it
serves, thus rendering their vertical demand null, yet requiring space in the hourly capacity.

2. SERVICE FUNCTION AREA REQUIREMENTS

Once CCC is calculated, other resort facilities are sized to create a balance with the CCC.
Guest service facilities should be sized as a function of the CCC. At RMR, the guest service space
ranges are 1.30 – 1.63 sq.m. per CCC.

3. LUNCHTIME SEATING REQUIREMENTS

The following tables utilize the lunchtime distribution of the CCC to determine the number of
food service seats recommended throughout the resort. An expected average turnover of 3.5
people per seat is used.

4. PARKING REQUIREMENTS AT PORTALS

The resort planning initially anticipated the need to accommodate only 37.5 percent of the
CCC and 40 percent of employees with surface parking based on most guests being
regional/destination guests; and though these guests account for a significant portion of visitors
at the resort, many take their accommodation within the City of Revelstoke core and still require
surface parking at the resort. Experience at the resort shows that currently approximately 70
percent of guests and employees require surface parking.
