Self-Control
This month our Moral Focus is Self-Control. Students will be learning and discussing how to maintain patience and calmness during trying circumstances, especially those in which there is no control over the outcome. Please help to reinforce this Moral Focus topic at home by speaking with you child about the benefits of exhibiting Self-Control. Do you have it? Sponge Bob does Not!

Students

have three minutes inbetween their classes to gather their belongings, use the restroom, and make it to their next rotation on time. The timer begins when the last rotation is released. If a student fails to make it to their class on time, then a tardy is issued. Please encourage your child to get to class on time to avoid warning letters and detentions. Letters are sent home after three tardies and a detention is issued after five. The tardy count does not start over at the beginning of the new trimester.

You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you.

Wacky Weather
In Michigan it rains one day, snows the next, and is sunny for the rest of the week. This is a reminder that ALL students need to dress for the weather. Middle school students ate not too cool to wear proper winter attire. Winter coats, hats, scarves, gloves, boots, and snow pants are all necessary for warmth during the winter months. Students go outside each day for recess and dismissal. We will go out each day unless it is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

Vocabulary and Spelling Students have been fully introduced to the world of Wordly Wise this and last week. They have worked with two lessons and are learning not only spelling tricks but also how to use these words properly in their writing. Grammar This week marks the end of our Pronoun chapter. Students have been working hard on mastering how to effectively use Pronouns in their everyday writing to avoid using the same words over and over again. There has been a great improvement among all sixth graders. Students move on to Verbs next week. Writing There has been a great buzz among students this week with their personal narratives. They are all eager to share their stories with the class. We worked on adding Dazzling Details to make the narratives pop with excitement! Our next writing unit will center on biographies. Reading Students have been using their textbooks to brush up on the difference between a biography and an autobiography. They have read biographies on Walt Disney, Calvin Klein, and Matthew Henson. The knowledge gained will help students as they begin to select a historical figure to study (guidelines will be given out next week) and write their own biographies.

SOCIAL STUDIES WITH MS. TEXTOR

In the past week, students took a look at the
Athenian empire and the importance of their government. This week in Social Studies students are learning what it was like to live a day in the life of an Athenian. Students will be discovering the roles that both men and women played during this time and differences between those roles. As the week continues students will explore what a house in ancient Greece would have been like. By the end of next week your scholar will become a realtor, trying to sell an ancient Grecian home and all it has to offer! Each class will take a look at each housing add to decide if they were living in ancient Greece what house would they choose and why?! I can... explain the different roles that men and women played in ancient Greece Evaluate how the social structure in ancient civilizations contributed to their success (or lack thereof).

Have you checked you childs planner today?

This coming week students will continue working

with rational numbers. Rotation 3 will begin using basic operations and estimation with fractions. Rotation 2 will finish the section on using operation with decimals. Rotation 1 will continue working with finding equivalent fractions and mixed numbers and comparing fractions. I would like to congratulate all three rotations. Since I have arrived there has been a significant increase in homework that is being turned in on time. This speaks to your dedication to the class and your own education.

SCIENCE WITH MRS. LEE

http://mrsawesomelee.weebly.com/index.html

Students worked in teams of 3-4 to create a model that made a hum sound followed by a ding sound. They found out quickly that it is not always and easy task to create something from nothing. Students will now work to make a doorbell out of the same materials and try to sell their invention. Next Week: Go Carts I Can. . . Construct a Conceptual and Physical Models of an unknown system. Evaluate the usefulness of the model as a comparison tool.

Hum Dingers were a SUCCESS!

Holiday Dress Up Day
For $1.00, students DO NOT have to wear their uniforms to school on December 22nd. Instead they can wear their Holiday finiest. Dresses, bow ties, suits, and festive sweaters are all welcome on this day. Jeans are acceptable with Holiday dress shirts or sweaters

Dont let the cold or the upcoming break affect your childs academics! Encourage them to get their work done on time if not early! Remember we offer Lunch Bunch on Tuesdays and Thursday as well as No Excuses Club after school from 3:15-4:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you know you have a big event coming up and your child will be pressed for time, these are great opportunities for work completion.
