Concept of Smart Street Lighting
and traditional Dumb Street
Lighting
Traditional dumb streetlights and challenges
Typical Challenges:
• No way to know about realistic power consumption
• Every individual luminaire needs to be separately maintained.
• Unless physically found or reported, there is no way to know if an
entire line of luminaires connected to a DB or an individual
luminaire is working properly or not.
• The is no way of having any real-time or near real-time information
about Electrical parameters of the feeder / metering unit – three
phase voltage, current, KWH etc.
• The is no way of having any real-time or near real-time information
How does dumb lighting grid work?: about the Status of street lights downside the feeder / metering
unit – alerts / notification.
• Luminaires are attached to Brackets installed on Poles • There is no provision to do an “On demand” ON / OFF / DIM of
• Certain number of Luminaires of the poles are connected individual or group of lights.
using power distribution cables using one isolated electrical • There is no way of having any realistic alerts for – faulty light

• The cabinet is connected to the HT/LT power sources voltage etc.
• Switching is handled manually at the Cabinet/DB level • No way of performing preventive maintenance to avoid accidents
individually
Smart Street Lighting Grid

How does Smart lighting grid work?:

• Every luminaire has a Light control unit (LCU) connected to it which works as a two-way communication unit between the smart driver of the luminaire and the
central control unit through a data control unit (DCU) or gateway (GW).
• The DCU or Gateway (GW) exchanges information with the Central Control and Monitoring Systems (CCMS) hosted on the Central Server.
• Smart LED Lighting System supports Individual or group ON / OFF / DIM of lights as per configurable schedule.
• supports real-time alerts for – faulty lights and threshold crossing for voltage, faulty line etc.
• supports programmable scheduling, metering unit configurations, thresholds, alert notification etc.
• Map integration for user interface to display the streetlights on the map with real time status for preventive maintenance, and many more …..
We have introduced Smart SOLAR Street Lighting

Special features of Smart Solar Street Lighting System:

• DC powered lighting control technology

• Very low power consuming hardware (>=2w), requiring no extra capacity for battery
• All standard smart lighting features
• Additional features: solar panel efficiency analysis report, battery efficiency analysis
B.
Why Smart Street Lighting?
Why Smart Lighting?
Environmental Concerns:

Public lighting has been named ‘the nervous system of a city’, connecting
hundreds of millions of streetlights with access to power across the globe.

This constantly increasing number has made lighting responsible for a

staggering 19% of global electricity usage and is contributing towards the
already exceeding levels of CO2 emissions.

Smart Street Lighting can be one of the most effective tools to the Cities and
Municipalities in addressing the challenge of creating a secure environment
for its current and future inhabitants, while being energy and cost efficient.

Street lighting is now the most essential and a core piece of urban and rural
infrastructure, creating a safe environment for pedestrians, drivers and the
entire society.

This, however, represents a major cost for the local government which can be
challenging to accommodate and sustain.

It is still common for municipalities to use outdated and inefficient street

lighting facilities which leads to a higher energy consumption and increased
maintenance costs. An old and inefficient lighting system can account for as
much as 60% of a typical city’s entire energy bill.
Birds-eye view of the Benefits of Smart Lighting Grid
1: Building the Foundation of a Real Smart City

• Alone, smart lighting systems turn a city’s lighting

grid into one centrally-controlled network; each
individual light can be managed as a single element,
or as part of the wider system.

• By hooking up each and every pole to a wider

network connection, each lamp becomes an Internet
of Things (IoT) ready installation platform, a plug-n-
and-play IoT base acting as a catalyst for additional
smart city investment.

• With a safe and secure network already present via

the lighting system, bolt-on technologies starting
from integrated CCTV cameras to environment
monitoring to advertising boards can be added to the
network, offering a range of benefits from public
safety to waste management to city's infrastructure
health management to revenue options.

expense (especially after the warranty period), the
light fittings must be built as modular, with tool-
free easy access.

EASY TO MAINTAIN
• Access from above in an ergonomic position
• Convenient access via easy to open clip
• Canopy retained for extra safety during
maintenance operation
• Extra-long lifetime of the driver reduces the
maintenance cycle
• Ultra durable flat glass enclosure for rapid cleaning
• For increased safety, when the canopy is opened,
an automatic cut-off device isolates the lantern
from the power source
ENHANCEMENT OF PERFORMANCE CREDENTIALS
Must be true IP66 rated for ingress protection and IK09 for impact as recommended by global standards, certified by
reliable 3rd party testing labs, such as SGS, TUV, BV etc.

OptiBLOC®:
Thorn Lighting (UK)’s performance credentials
are enhanced with its patented OptiBLOC®
technology. OptiBLOC® is a double IP66 sealing
system (CLASS II) for the gear compartment and
optic which guarantees longevity of the
components and extended performance
throughout the lifetime of the luminaire.
BEST IN CLASS OPTICS
The LED Street Luminaires must have the ability to be programmed with different distribution of lights based on
road/street types, weather etc. which ensures elimination/reduction of light wastage and light pollution.

THORN’s R-PEC Optic®:

THORN luminaires feature the

patented class-leading optical
performance of the R-PEC
optic. R-PEC offers 15 different
precision light distributions,
achieving wide column spacing,
excellent uniformity plus no
waste or obtrusive light.
THERMAL MANAGEMENT AND HEAT DISSIPATION
The Luminaires must use the class-leading thermal management as it is a critical requirement for ensuring longer
life-time of the LED lighting system.

The following diagram shows thermal images of Thorn’s Civiteq and Isaro Pro, which shows real time heat dissipation image of the Luminaires.

The LED modules are mounted on heavy-duty

heat sinks (only die cast Aluminum with less
copper content is used) to ensure excellent
heat dissipation.

The design of the heat sinks are done as such that there is a direct thermal path from the led junctions to the
atmosphere to provide a thermal transfer effect throughout the life of the luminaire.
