It is recommended that you upgrade RecoverPoint Appliance (RPA) software to the latest RecoverPoint
release to gain the latest RecoverPoint features and functionality.

Upgrades from RecoverPoint 3.5 and later are performed using RecoverPoint Deployment Manager and
are non-disruptive to the environment; they do not cause application or replication downtime, nor journal
loss. Dell EMC RecoverPoint Deployment Manager is a package of wizards that help you perform a
number of important RecoverPoint operations from a single management point.

The brief procedure to upgrade RecoverPoint to latest version is:

• Upgrades are performed in one of the following ways:

‒ By Dell EMC Customer Support and authorized partners,
‒ By customers who are performing their own upgrades

• Upgrade Cluster wizard upgrades to the next major version.

• Best practice is to upgrade splitters to the same RecoverPoint release as the software.

• Completing the upgrade procedure may take several hours, depending on the ISO file version, network
speed, and size of environment being upgraded.

• The Upgrade Cluster Wizard supports auto-recovery. If a step fails, run the wizard again. It continues
from the failed step.

NOTE: RecoverPoint upgrade includes hardware upgrade and software upgrade, with different procedures
for each.

RecoverPoint information and support can be found at the DellLL EMC Online Support website, the SolVe
Desktop utility which can be used to create a customized, step-by-step procedure document, by consulting
the Dell EMC Support Matrix, and at RecoverPoint community within the Dell EMC Community Network.
These facilities will be discussed in detail in the following slides.

The URL for the online RecoverPoint documentation is: support.emc.com. Many important and informative
resources and documentation are available for RecoverPoint at Dell EMC Online Support - such as
technical notes, manuals and guides, and RecoverPoint white papers. It is a good idea to become familiar
with what is available at Dell EMC Online Support before beginning your work. One of the documents you
should read first are the Release Notes for the specific product release or releases you will be
encountering.

SolVe Desktop can create written procedures to perform installation upgrades and maintenance for
RecoverPoint. It requires authorization as an employee or partner. It self-updates, so it will always create
current procedures. Generate the appropriate procedure using the steps shown here.

• Select the desired operation from the list of operations available, for example here we are selecting
Upgrade operation.

• Now provide the requested information and click next.

• RecoverPoint for VNX is an exception for the CCA process, and you will receive a reminder when you
are trying to generate an upgrade procedure through SolVe Desktop.

• Continue providing the requested information.

• Verify requested information is correct and click generate.

• Detailed Procedure is generated as per input specifications.

This procedure document will be saved in the MS Word format in the specified location and will guide you
through the entire upgrade process.

RecoverPoint Change Control is in place to help control and improve change activities that take place
within a customer's environment. It is therefore necessary to understand the environment prior to being
able to suggest a proper procedure, and to detail any items that may result in impact to the change event.
A Change Control Request Form should be completely filled out for each site that is part of the
replication environment, and sent to [email protected]. The RecoverPoint Change
Control process should be used prior to scheduling any activity with the customer. The process should be
used to determine the extent of the activity and to help determine the amount of time needed to execute
the activity. The process should also be used as a point-in-time check for any sources of information that
should be reviewed and understood prior to executing the change events.

Information about the RecoverPoint Change Control Process can be obtained from either of these two
sources:

Dell EMC Internal (employees):

http://10.241.171.170/RecoverPoint/Change_Control/RecoverPoint_Change_Control_Process

Dell EMC Partners:

https://servicepartners.emc.com/restricted/frame.asp

A list of Mandatory Dell EMC Knowledgebase articles will be provided with your approved RecoverPoint
Change Control. It is very important that you review and understand each article before proceeding.

This is a closer view of Dell EMC Change Control

(http://supportinfo.lss.emc.com/RecoverPoint/Change_Control). Starting in RecoverPoint 4.0, Deployment
Manager allows for certain procedures to use Change Control Automation, or CCA. This is built into the
wizards and requires user access to be verified. An example of this is when you are using Deployment
Manager to upgrade from RecoverPoint/SE 3.5 to 4.1. From the Wiki web page, procedures and
documents required for CCA can be found and downloaded.

You can use the Unisphere GUI to retrieve system log files and environment information for support
purposes. System information is collected using the Collect System Information wizard and can be
gathered within a period of the past thirty days.

In Unisphere, select Admin > System Analysis Tools > Collect System Information. Select the desired
collection period. Only three days of information can be collected at one time.

RPA Clusters specifies the RPA clusters from which to collect system information. If none of the check-
boxes are selected, system information is collected only from the RPA cluster from which the collection
process is triggered. This setting is only relevant when Include Information from RPA Clusters check-
box is selected. This option enables the collection of system information from RPA clusters.

Include Core Files selects whether or not to include core files in the output. Core files may be large.
Therefore, including these files in the collection process may substantially increase collection time. Output
can be sent to the RPA or an external FTP server.

Deployment Manager can be downloaded from support.emc.com. The latest version should always be
downloaded prior to performing any upgrade or maintenance task. Once the download is complete, to
launch Deployment Manager, open the RecoverPoint_DM.exe application file.

Deployment Manager branches off into three paths:

• The first path provides options for installation, upgrade, and other operations for RecoverPoint 5.0
releases. End users who would like to install the latest RecoverPoint 5.0 release on a new hardware
appliance or virtual RecoverPoint Appliance (vRPA) should use this option.

• Users who would like to upgrade to the latest RecoverPoint 5.0 version from version 4.0,4.1, or 4.4
should choose the second option.

• Users who would like to upgrade to the latest RecoverPoint 5.0 version from version 3.5 or earlier
should choose the third option. This option will launch the version of Deployment Manager that
supports 3.5.

RecoverPoint Deployment Manager contains the Upgrade Cluster, a Java-based GUI wizard that allows
you to perform non-disruptive upgrades of RPA software. The Wizard is composed of two flows: Prepare
for Upgrade, which must be completed first, and Apply Upgrade, which must be completed afterward.

The Prepare for Upgrade wizard guides you through the verification of RecoverPoint credentials, and
downloads ISO files to all RPAs in the environment. The Apply Upgrade wizard applies the upgrade to all
RPAs. Once the upgrade is complete, you can continue using the Unisphere for RecoverPoint GUI.

While the upgrade procedure does not upgrade RecoverPoint splitters (VNX, VMAX, and VPLEX), a
RecoverPoint 4.1 environment can support both v4.1 and v3.5 splitters. Dell EMC advises you to upgrade
splitters to the same RecoverPoint release to gain the latest splitter functionalities and features.

The Upgrade RPAs Wizard supports auto-recovery. Therefore, if a step fails anywhere in the procedure,
running the Wizard again will automatically continue the procedure from the point where a step failed.

The Deployment Manager application stores logs in specified locations. These are useful if for any reason,
an upgrade fails to complete.

Logs of operations are stored in the following locations:

Prepare for Upgrade logs are named and found in: <unzip_location>/logs/ndu_prepare.log

Apply/Resume Upgrade logs are named and found in: <unzip_location>/logs/ndu_apply.log

Previously run wizard logs (Prepare and Apply [or Resume]) are found in:<unzip_location>/oldlogs/*.log

Although non-disruptive to normal operations, it is important to take into consideration that the upgrade
procedure may take a number of hours to complete, depending on the ISO file distribution, network speed,
and size of the environment being upgraded.

As mentioned earlier, when choosing RecoverPoint 3.5 or earlier releases to install, maintain, or upgrade
from, Deployment Manager 1.1 will be launched. For RecoverPoint 4.0 and later, Deployment Manager
2.4 will be launched.

To use the Upgrade Cluster Wizard, on the login screen, select Other operations (EMC personnel) and
enter your RecoverPoint login credentials. The default CLI username and password is admin and admin.
On the Deployment Manager wizard selection screen, select option Upgrade Cluster.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 17

To begin the upgrade, select the ‘Prepare for Upgrade’ option, then click Next. Review the conditions for
upgrading your environment and verify that you have fulfilled them. Select the ‘I have fulfilled the
conditions for upgrading the cluster’ check-box and click Next to continue.

This slide shows where to provide RPA login credentials and the site management IP address.

Enter login credentials:

• Enter a site management or an RPA IP address
• Enter installation username and password (default boxmgmt)
• Enter CLI username and password (default admin) if upgrading from the RecoverPoint 3.1 version
Click Next to continue.

Review the status of the RPAs in the system. The system communicates and validates the status of the
RPAs and confirms that all components are normal or if errors are detected. A green check mark indicates
that status is normal for a listed item. If there are any errors or warnings, it is recommended to resolve all
the issues before proceeding to the next step. If there are no errors or warnings click Next to continue.

Enter Dell EMC Online Support site credentials, which will provide access to the relevant Upgrade Change
Management information required to complete the upgrade.

If you do not have Internet connectivity, or do not have EMC Online Support credentials, select the ‘Use
an offline Upgrade Change Management XML file’ check-box and load the XML file into the wizard from a
local folder (where you have saved the file).

To obtain the XML file, you must open an Upgrade Service Request with Customer Support. In the
request, ask for the latest Upgrade Change Management XML file for the RecoverPoint Deployment
Manager, and indicate the intended date of the upgrade. The file will be provided within one (1) business
day as an email attachment, so ensure a valid email address is provided. Once provided, the file must be
used within 30 days of delivery.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 21

Choose an option of how to distribute the ISO file to the RPAs. If the RecoverPoint system spans more
than one site, there will be one ISO download information dialog box for each.

The options available are:

• Upload from local machine

• Copy from DVD or USB device inserted in the RPAs

• Download from an FTP server

If you choose Download from FTP server, enter the FTP credentials of an FTP server where the
RecoverPoint ISO file is located to download it to the RPAs. Enable FTP credentials including FTP server
IP address, port number, FTP username and password, File location, and File name. The file name must
be the same file name as the ISO file that was downloaded from support.emc.com.

The wizard analyzes which release you are upgrading from and which release you are upgrading to.
Based on this analysis, it will present you with a list of general upgrade messages and Upgrade Change
Management procedures that must be completed before continuing the upgrade. These procedures are
unique to the RecoverPoint or RecoverPoint for VNX system you are upgrading. The procedures
displayed are relevant to the release from which you are upgrading and the release to which you are
upgrading. The general upgrade messages are relevant to all upgrades, regardless of what release you
are upgrading from or to.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 23

Review the status of the ISO file distribution results. Beside the site name is an indication of the ISO
distribution option you selected. In this example, ‘Upload from local machine’ was selected.

The system verifies the ISO file and its distribution to all RPAs and confirms that this was successful or
that errors were detected. When all status indications appear normal (green check mark), click Next.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 24

System diagnostics are performed for the site(s) and the RPAs. By doing so, the system attempts to
validate that the current configuration is appropriate and that RecoverPoint can successfully operate in the
current environment. The system will confirm that all components are OK and that no errors or warnings
exist. If errors are detected, you must correct them to be able to continue. Even though the system allows
you to ignore them, if relevant warnings are detected, it is recommended to address them before you
continue.

Once errors and warnings are resolved, click Refresh to rerun the system diagnostics.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 25

Before applying the upgrade, you must save a configuration file and send a system modifications file to
Customer Support, if relevant.

A configuration file is required to apply the upgrade. If the upgrade is to be applied at a later date,
Deployment Manager will need this file to be able to apply the upgrade.

The system you are upgrading may have modifications. If this is the case, these may need to be applied to
the system before you can actually apply the upgrade.

Specify a path and file name to save a system modifications file. By default, the file name is
ndu_mod.properties.
• If Deployment Manager does not indicate that modifications are found, a message appears stating that
no file was created and saved. You can continue and apply the upgrade.
• If modifications are found, they are saved to a file. You must submit the file to Dell EMC Customer
Support and wait for a response before applying the upgrade.

You must submit this file in an Upgrade Service Request to Customer Support for analysis. In the request,
indicate that the attached file needs to be reviewed for a pending upgrade, and indicate the intended date
of the upgrade. Allow at least 5 business days for a response from Customer Support before performing
the Apply Upgrade configuration step of the wizard. This time allows Customer Support to research the
contents, and respond to you. After analysis, the response will be in the form of the file being returned to
you.

If you select the ‘Apply upgrade now’ check-box and click Next, the system takes you to ‘Apply upgrade
configuration’. If you leave the ‘Apply upgrade now’ check-box cleared and click Finish, the Upgrade
RPAs Wizard closes. A typical reason not to proceed with the upgrade is to allow time for full ISO
download onto the RPAs. Depending on bandwidth, the download could take a significant amount of time.
It may be best to prepare for the upgrade and allow time for the download prior to the scheduled time for
the actual upgrade procedure. When the scheduled time arrives, you can get back to this point and use
the configuration file to pick up where the system left off.

Enter the passwords for the admin and boxmgmt user.

Enter the path to the configuration file, saved during the Prepare phase of the upgrade. This file must be
available, or the prepare will need to be run again.
If a system modifications file was provided to you by Customer Support, you must import it now. Enter the
path and file name of the file. The system modifications file is important for the upgrade to complete
successfully. Continue only if you are sure that you do not need to import a file. Click Next to proceed.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 29

The results of the environment diagnostics test are displayed on this screen. If warnings or errors are
found, they will be displayed in the table.

It is strongly recommended to resolve these warnings and errors before proceeding. Failure to do so may
lead to disruption in replication or production downtime during a disaster, and other possible issues during
normal operation.

If no warnings or errors are found, ‘Environment diagnostics completed successfully’ will be displayed.

When ready to apply the upgrade, click Next.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 30

In this step, you need to register your VNX/CLARiiON array for RecoverPoint management. Enter the
Unisphere/ Navisphere login credentials.

• Enter the IP address of storage processors of VNX/CLARiiON array

• Enter the username and password (default sysadmin)

• Select Authentication scope as Global (default) and Click Next

The next step is to verify the login credentials are correct for storage connectivity. If the connectivity
results contain any warnings, it is recommended to fix them before going to the next step.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 31

Applying the upgrade may take a number of hours to complete, depending on the size of the environment
you are upgrading (number of RPAs, number of Consistency Groups, number of volumes, and so on).

The system performs pre-apply preparations, applies the upgrade to all RPAs, finishes applying the
upgrade, and verifies that the RecoverPoint setup was upgraded completely.

During this step the system goes into maintenance mode. While in this mode, the RecoverPoint GUI
becomes read-only; the GUI can only be used to monitor the system and modifications cannot be made.

Once the upgrade is complete, RecoverPoint exits maintenance mode and automatically performs SAN
Diagnostics.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 32

To ensure that the upgrade is successful, use the Unisphere for RecoverPoint Dashboard to verify: the
version, that all system components are functioning properly, and that Consistency Groups are running on
the same RPAs as before the upgrade. Do this by selecting Protection > Manage Protection and
verifying the information is as expected. In the example, the Consistency Group named “Application-1” is
attached to RPA1. This reflects the configuration before the upgrade and is therefore correct.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 33

To ensure your system can be properly supported, you should configure the system reports mechanism
(preferred method is ESRS) for each RPA cluster. For details on how to configure system reports, refer to
the EMC RecoverPoint Administrator’s Guide.

After performing a major upgrade, the previous license will automatically be converted to the new license
format. However, the new license is temporary and only valid for 90 days from the date of upgrade. After
that, you must install one or more permanent license files to replicate with RecoverPoint. Refer to the
EMC RecoverPoint Administrator's Guide for detailed instructions on upgrading your license. Refer to the
EMC RecoverPoint Release Notes for information on the licensed features for the release. After upgrading
the RecoverPoint system, you must fill out the RecoverPoint Post-Deployment Form and send it to the
EMC Install Base (IB) group to register your RecoverPoint system.
After an upgrade of the RecoverPoint Cluster software, the write splitter versions for the new
RecoverPoint versions should be verified for compatibility. The RecoverPoint support matrix posted in
eLab is an easy-to-use tool (https://elabnavigator.emc.com/eln/search?RecoverPoint) for checking the
correct versions of RecoverPoint along with the versions of write splitter code. The table displays an
example covering the VNX, VMAX and VPLEX splitters.
Remember that RecoverPoint 4.0 and above only supports array-based splitters. SAN- and host-based
splitters are no longer functional with RecoverPoint 4.0. Array-based splitters with older code will function
but will need to be updated as soon as possible.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 34

This lesson covers the steps to upgrade RecoverPoint 4.4 to 5.0.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 35

Upgrading a RecoverPoint 4.4 system is very similar to upgrading from version 3.5. The major difference
is that RecoverPoint 4.0 and above can have multiple clusters. Each of these clusters are now upgraded
one at a time. It is important to remember that the clusters that are connected together all must be
upgraded to the same version; however the upgrade process will do each cluster independently.

To upgrade a 4.4 cluster, use the Deployment Manager, this time following the RecoverPoint 4.0 or later
releases branch. This will lead you into selecting the Upgrade Cluster Wizard.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 36

The upgrade process from 4.4 is very similar to the one previously described. The first step is to prepare
for the upgrade. Then, once that wizard is complete, you can apply the upgrade or wait until a later time to
apply it.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 37

One of the new features available when upgrading from RecoverPoint 4.0 is that the ISO image can be
downloaded directly from support.emc.com.

Any site that has connectivity to support.emc.com, and where the user has the credentials, will be given a
download directly to each RPA in the cluster.

If this is not possible, an ISO image can be provided locally via DVD or USB. This must be provided for
each RPA. Also, an FTP server can be used.

This module focuses on RecoverPoint appliance (RPA) replacement process.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 41

This lesson covers the steps and procedures to non-disruptively replace a physical RPA.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 42

The three-stage process for Gen5 RPA replacement are:

• Get ready before replacement

− Record RecoverPoint management IP address or RPA IP addresses
− Get new RPA running the same ISO image
− Assure all required tools are available

• Perform replacement using Deployment Manager

− Launch Deployment Manager and log in as admin, select installation mode and save settings.
− Log in as boxmgmt and configure RPAs
− Check RPA replacement preparation and prerequisites
− Replace RPA

• Update RecoverPoint registration information after replacement

− Login Unisphere for RecoverPoint

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 43

Prior to replacing an RPA, make sure all required resource or tools are in hand:

• First, ensure that you have a secure shell (SSH) client, such as PuTTY, on your Laptop.

• The RecoverPoint version (release number) and code level of the existing cluster need to be verified.
These can be verified by using CLI or using the RecoverPoint Management Application GUI:
‒ Using CLI
o Login as admin
o Run the get_version command to view the running RecoverPoint version
‒ Using the Unisphere for RecoverPoint
o Login as admin
o Select Help > About Unisphere for RecoverPoint

Once the version of the running RecoverPoint cluster is known, it can be determined if the replacement
RPA needs to be upgraded prior to installation.

• Always use the latest version of Deployment Manager for performing any upgrade or maintenance task.
Go to support.emc.com website and download the latest version if you do not have the latest version.

• Use SolVe Desktop (RecoverPoint Procedure Generator) to generate the procedure for physical RPA
replacement.

• To obtain an image of the RecoverPoint software, go to the support.emc.com website. Find and
download the RecoverPoint ISO image that corresponds to your release number and code level. Verify the
checksum against the md5sum listed in Dell EMC support.

If you have all these conditions met, you are ready to proceed with removing the failed RPA.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 44

Users can use Unisphere to locate the faulty components. If any component is not functioning, an error
indicator will appear next to the component icon. Users can click the orange error indicator for more
information. It is vital to know the cluster and RPA number of the failed RPA. In this example, it is cluster
London RPA 1.

Alternatively, you can use the CLI to check the status of the RecoverPoint cluster. Log in as the admin
user and run the get_system_status command.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 45

Before you begin using the RPA Replacement Wizard, ensure the following conditions are met:

• You know the cluster management IP address or an RPA IP address

• You have a valid RecoverPoint login credentials

• The new RPA has a RecoverPoint software ISO image that is the same release as that running on the
other RPAs in the cluster

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 46

When removing the failed RPA from its location, it is very important to record all cable locations. After the
new RPA is installed, it is critical that the cables be placed back into the corresponding ports of the new
RPA. This slide shows gen5 RPA.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 47

Adding a new RPA requires one “U” of rack space, one LAN connection, one WAN connection, two-to-four
FC (Fibre Channel) SAN connections, two input power sources, and set temporary IP and subnet in each

Use one of these methods to connect to a new uninstalled physical RPA:
- A Keyboard and Monitor or KVM switch (connected to the RPA, as you would to any Linux machine),
OR
- Connect to the appliance using an SSH client via the default IP address for the WAN interface of
10.77.77.77
Log on to the new RPA using the boxmgmt account; the default password is boxmgmt.
Once logged into the new RPA, the version of RecoverPoint currently installed on the appliance will be
displayed.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 49

If the new RPA is discovered not to have the correct version of RecoverPoint software, the correct version
can be installed using the ISO file. The correct ISO file can be downloaded in 2 ways:

1. Using the Installation Manager (boxmgmt) menu, OR

2. Using Dell EMC Online Support website

Using the Installation Manager (boxmgmt) menu, download the correct ISO file using FTP. After
downloading, place the downloaded ISO image on a service laptop. Then, configure an FTP server for the
service laptop. Next, connect to the new RPA with an SSH client and login with the boxmgmt account.
Answer ‘no’ to any wizards that may start after login.

From the main menu, select Installation>Upgrade>Download ISO. Enter the FTP information and the
path to the ISO image. The box will load the image, apply the image, and reboot. When the RPA
completes the reboot, it will have the correct version installed. An important point to remember is that if a
temporary IP address was configured prior to the reboot, it will be lost and have to be set again.

Proceed to the next slide to explore the second option, i.e. using Dell EMC Online Support website.

Changing the software installed on the new RPA can easily be done from the image downloaded from Dell
EMC Online Support. Once you download the ISO file, follow these steps:

1. Create a DVD with the ISO image

2. Open the DVD tray

3. Power down the RPA

4. Place the DVD in the tray and close it

5. Power on the RPA

The appliance boots from the DVD drive and installs the software. This can be observed from a monitor
connected to the RPA, but it is not required to do so. After approximately 10 minutes, the drive opens and
the RPA reboots. Connect to the RPA with the boxmgmt account and verify the version is correct. Connect
via the WAN default address of 10.77.77.77, or use a KVM. At this point, a temporary IP address matching
the address of the failed RPA can be configured.

Now, use the Deployment Manager wizard to perform the RPA Replacement steps. On the login screen,
select Other operations (EMC personnel) and enter your RecoverPoint login credentials. The default
CLI username and password is admin. On the Deployment Manager wizard selection screen, select option
RPA Replacement.

The RecoverPoint RPA Replacement Wizard is a graphical user interface (GUI) that helps you replace an
existing RPA in an RPA cluster with a new RPA without any application or replication downtime. Once the
wizard is completed, you will be able to continue using the RecoverPoint Management Application GUI
and CLI.

Throughout the RPA Replacement Wizard, you must enter a number of settings into the system. To
improve system performance, it is recommended to enter values in all fields. Whenever you click Next to
continue, the system will automatically save configuration settings in the configuration file. The system
does not allow you to navigate forward if you have not completed any step, as it is mandatory to go
through all the steps.

When using the Deployment Manager RPA Replacement Wizard, it is important to know the cluster
management IP address for the cluster that contains the failed RPA.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 52

As you can see on the screen, the RPA Replacement Wizard allows you to select one of two modes for
your configuration file:

1. Create a new RPA replacement configuration file:

If you choose this option, the system creates a new RPA replacement configuration file. The configuration
settings of the existing RPAs are added to the configuration file. The system uses these settings to
complete the RPA replacement. It is important to provide a valid file name and directory location. By
default, the file name and directory location is:

C: \ Users \<username> \ RecoverPoint \ HWR_config.properties.

Edit the field to change the information, or click Browse to select a different location to save the file, as
well as rename it.

2. Continue from a saved RPA replacement configuration file:

If you choose this option, the system loads the settings from a previously saved RPA replacement
configuration file. The system allows you to complete the RPA replacement using this file.

Once the wizard is open and you click Next to continue, the system automatically saves the configuration
settings in the configuration file that you created.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 53

Enter the RecoverPoint cluster management IP address and login credentials to connect to the cluster:

Cluster management (LAN)

Enter the cluster management address of the cluster with the failed RPA. If continuing from a saved
configuration file, an IP address will automatically be entered.

RecoverPoint installation credentials

Enter a RecoverPoint username and password. For username boxmgmt, the default password is
boxmgmt.

RecoverPoint administrator credentials

Enter a RecoverPoint username and password. For username admin, the default password is admin.

At this point, it might be easier to power off the RPA that has failed. This will make identification of the
RPA for the Deployment Manager wizard easier.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 54

Review the status of the RPAs in the cluster. If the RPA that is to be replaced does not appear, then power
off that RPA and click Refresh.

Select the check-box at the bottom of the screen if the RPA to be replaced has been physically removed
from the system and the new RPA is racked, connected, up, and has the relevant ISO image applied to it.
It is very important to select this check-box if the new RPA is in place. If the check-box is not selected, and
the new RPA is powered on and has the IP address of the failed RPA, the procedure will power off the
new RPA. The best practice at this point is to replace the RPA and select the check-box.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 55

During RPA replacement preparations, the system retrieves information of the RPA being replaced,
prepares the cluster for replacement of the RPA, and verifies the RPA being replaced is shut down.

Notice, the last step is to verify the RPA is powered off. This is why you did not swap the RPA with the
new one at this point.

Once the cluster has successfully prepared the RPA for replacement, click Next to continue.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 56

Before continuing, ensure the conditions shown on the screen are met on your cluster. You need to:

1. Record the orientation of the network and Fibre Channel (FC) cables of the RPA being replaced, then
disconnect the cables from the RPA.

2. Disconnect the power cables from the RPA being replaced and remove it from the rack.

3. Place the new RPA in the rack, connect the network, FC, and power cables, and power on the RPA.

4. Verify that the RecoverPoint release on the new RPA corresponds to the release running on the other
RPAs in the cluster.

5. Log in to the new RPA as user boxmgmt, enter the temporary IP address, subnet mask, and gateway of
the replaced RPA, then log out.

6. Verify that the new RPA is the same type (physical or virtual) as the other RPAs in the cluster.

7. All RPAs are running release 4.0 or later.

If any of the conditions are not fulfilled, it is recommended to close the wizard, fulfill the conditions, and
then run the wizard again.

Listed in the table is information about the RPA to be replaced.

Select the ‘I have fulfilled the conditions for replacing the RPA’ check-box, and click Next to continue.

The Storage Configuration step allows for two choices:

The first one would be to use the spoofing of the WWNs to make them the same as the RPA that is
being replaced. This of course is quicker, and will make sure that the new RPA sees the same storage as
the failed RPA.

The other would be to use the new WWNs of the RPA and re-zone and re-mask to connect the RPA to
storage. The wizard will display all existing WWNs and the new ones.

The information summary presented in the table can be exported for further use by clicking the Export to
CSV file button.

During this stage of the wizard, the system validates the RecoverPoint software release running on the
new RPA, applies settings to the new RPA, and applies configuration parameters to the new RPA.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 59

The system performs SAN diagnostics for the cluster - in order to validate that the current configuration is
appropriate for the RPA, and that RecoverPoint can successfully operate in the current SAN environment.

The system presents the results for: Severity, RPA, Message ID, Category, and Description. The system
confirms that all components are OK and that no errors exist. If errors are detected, you can click the error
to display details and instructions on how to correct the problem.

To proceed to the next step in the wizard, you must resolve all errors. Once all the errors are resolved,
click Refresh to re-run the SAN diagnostics process.

It is highly recommended to resolve all SAN discovery warnings, even though the system allows you to
ignore them and continue the installation.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 60

If signed scripts or tweak parameters were found on the RPA being replaced, they will be displayed on
this screen. When the RPA is down, these system modifications will be taken from a cluster control RPA.

As recommended, and by default, all the system modifications will be selected to run on the new RPA.
However, you can select which ones to apply to the new RPA, and clear the ones you do not want to
apply.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 61

During the Apply Changes stage of the wizard, the system finalizes the configuration of the new RPA,
verifies the new RPA is up and attached, and resumes the RPA and system from maintenance mode.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 62

The last step shows the summary. Once you have successfully completed the replacement of the RPA in
the RPA cluster, you can continue using Unisphere for RecoverPoint. It is important to verify the cluster
has completed the procedure and that it has exited from maintenance mode.

This lesson covers replacement of Gen6 components like Hard Disk Drive (HDD), power supply, I/O
module, fan unit, and chassis.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 64

Gen6 Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) are:

• Hard Disk Drive

• Power Supply

• I/O Module

• DIMMs

• Fan

• Chassis

To replace any Gen6 Field Replaceable Units (FRUs), SolVe Desktop can be used to generate the
procedure as shown in this screenshot.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 65

The two disk drives in slot 0 and slot 2 are in a software RAID-1 protection configuration. The disk drives
are hot-swappable, this means the RPA does not need to be powered off to replace one disk drive. Do not
remove both disk drives simultaneously as this will cause a system failure. Removing the second disk
drive before the new one is fully synchronized will also cause a system failure. If you need to remove the
second disk drive, wait until the two disk drives are synchronized again. The event message might take 2
– 3 hours before it goes away after a disk drive has been replaced.

A double disk drive failure in a RecoverPoint Appliance Gen6 is not a FRU. Dell EMC customer service
needs to follow a different procedure to resolve a double disk drive failure.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 66

Each disk drive has two LEDs. The blue LED glows when the drive is powered and blinks during drive
activity while amber glows solid when the drive requires service.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 67

The Overall Health tab of Unisphere for RecoverPoint shows alerts when any disk drive failure occurs.
The details of the event show the type of failure, in this case, it is a disk drive. As you can see, it states to
contact Dell EMC Customer Service. The particular RecoverPoint cluster is referenced as well as the RPA
in the cluster. The amber light on a disk in the referenced RPA indicates the faulty drive.

The same information is provided in the command line output.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 68

Once the disk drive has been replaced, the warning message should change to “RPA RAID recovery in
progress.” The software RAID protection rebuild might take up to two hours. The recovery message
should go away once the disk drives are fully synchronized again.

The same information is provided in the command line output.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 69

The power supplies are hot-swappable, this means the RPA does not need to be powered off to replace a
power supply. Contact Dell EMC Customer Support to order the replacement part. Always perform the
replacement according to the latest service instructions.

Use the error messages and log files to identify the faulty power supply and its respective RPA. The faulty
PSU should show an amber light.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 70

Alerts can be investigated in multiple places and ways in the GUI or CLI. Here, the cluster icon shows a
warning sign. Double-clicking the icon opens an Alerts window that shows you the severity and number of
alerts. Use the Details button for more granularity on the alerts.

Specifically, this power supply error could have been caused by unsecured power cables that fell out. So
in the details of this alert message, you are asked to check the electrical power to both power supplies of a
particular RPA. If the amber LED of the power supply is still glowing, contact Dell EMC and order the
replacement part.

Connectivity issues on the SAN network using the 16 Gb Fibre Channel I/O module or the management
network using the 10 Gb copper or optical I/O module can be related to changes in any part of the
networks. It does not necessarily mean that an I/O module is defective. After an analysis, if the I/O module
is deemed defective, it needs to be replaced following the FRU procedure.

There are two slots for I/O modules in the RecoverPoint Appliance Gen6 - slot 0 and slot 1. The I/O
modules are only cold-swappable, this means the RPA needs to be powered off. Always follow the proper
power off procedure.

When the FC I/O module in a RecoverPoint Appliance Gen6 is replaced, there is no need for rezoning.
The WWNs are derived from the seed programmed into the chassis. The seed varies per RPA.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 72

The DIMM modules are cold-swappable. Always perform the replacement according to the latest service
instructions.

The DIMM location and slot numbering can be seen on the fan connector cover once you have opened the
chassis.

The replacement process will be discussed in the next slide.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 73

If performance or behavioral analysis of an RPA make it plausible that the issue is related to the memory
of an RPA, four (4) DIMM modules need to be ordered through Dell EMC Customer Service.

Once the modules are received, the impacted RPA is powered off. The system service LED (amber) will
be on indicating the physical RPA. Next, both power cords need to be removed from the unit to completely
power it off.

The DIMM modules are located in slots 0 / 7 / 8 / 15.

Remove the Fan Connector Cover for easier access and replace all four (4) DIMM modules.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 74

Fans are only cold-swappable, this means that the RPA needs to be powered off. Always perform the
replacement according to the latest service instructions.

The location of each fan unit is shown on the Fan Connector Cover. This cover can be seen after you
have removed the chassis cover.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 75

The Overall Health tab of Unisphere for RecoverPoint shows alerts when any failure occurs. The
details of the alert show the type of failure, in this case, a fan failure. It instructs you to contact Dell EMC
Customer Service. The particular RecoverPoint cluster is referenced as well as the RPA in the cluster.

The same information is provided in the command line output.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 76

As we discussed in the previous slide, when an alert is generated for a faulted fan unit, the impacted RPA
is also referenced in the message. After identifying the impacted RPA, six (6) fan units need to be ordered
through Dell EMC Customer Service. Once the six units are received, the impacted RPA should be
powered off following the power-off procedure. The system service LED will be on for easy identification of
the physical RPA before both power cords are removed from the RPA to completely power it off.

After the RPA is opened, remove the Fan Connector Cover for access to the six fan units and perform
replacement according to the latest service instructions.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 77

Chassis is a field replaceable unit and is cold-swappable. When diagnosed as faulty, order the Chassis
FRU through Dell EMC Customer Service.

The faulted RPA is powered off and replacement should always be performed according to the latest
service instructions.

The replacement chassis does not include I/O modules nor is the RecoverPoint OS installed.

Follow these steps in the service procedure to replace a chassis. These steps might take 2 to 3 hours from
the moment you receive the chassis FRU to having the RPA working in the RP cluster.

The main steps to prepare the new chassis for the hardware swap are to configure the BIOS setup and to
configure the resume of the new chassis.

Next, the RecoverPoint OS is installed using a bootable USB device. Finally, configurations and
validations of the new chassis are necessary, before the RPA can be used to rejoin the RPA cluster using
the RPA Replacement Wizard in the Deployment Manager utility.

Let us discuss these steps in more detail in the next slides.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 78

When preparing the replacement chassis for the hardware swap, place it side-by-side with the faulted
RPA in your working area. Move the service tag to the replacement chassis. The product serial number
displayed on it will be used later during the procedure.

Next, move the I/O modules to the new chassis and place them in the same slots they originated from on
the defective chassis.

If the faulted RPA only has the 16 Gb Fibre Channel I/O module, make sure that the replacement chassis
has a filler in the second slot.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 79

For some of the preparation and configuration steps, a serial connection to the replacement chassis is
needed. The mini-serial connection is plugged into the top of the two serial ports on the chassis (serial
console port). The other side, most likely, is a USB-Serial adapter cable for the USB port on your laptop.

When connected, use Putty with a serial connection option and a 115200 baud rate. Power up the new
chassis, and use the <F2> or <DEL> key when the message to enter the BIOS setup appears.

The BIOS entries of the USB Mass Storage Drive and the Launch VGA OpROM need to be set to
Enabled. Verify the settings, or make necessary changes and select Save on Exit.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 80

An RPA cannot be used in the RecoverPoint environment unless its resume contains the necessary
identifying information.

During bootup, the POST alphabet listing will appear. Break into the alphabet by pressing <CTRL>+<C>
(Control-C) keys and wait until the alphabet listing stops. Enter the password as it is given to you in the
procedure.

When the Diagnostic Menu appears, enter the option 35 – Resume PROM Sub-Menu and press the
Enter key. From here, you can select to set the resume and edit the settings for the XP chassis.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 81

Before you can install the RecoverPoint operating system, you need to create a bootable USB device that
will contain the same RecoverPoint software version that is installed on the cluster.

The utility Rufus 2.8 or higher needs to be used to create a bootable USB thumb drive on your laptop with
the RecoverPoint ISO installation file.

When successfully created, plug the USB drive into the USB port of the replacement chassis. The BIOS
needs to be entered again during the boot. The boot order is overridden for the next boot. For this, you
select the USB device that you plugged into the chassis.

Once you press the Enter key, the system boots off the USB device and installs the RPA OS. This
installation also installs any available updates to the BIOS, POST, and firmware automatically.

The installation takes about 10 – 15 minutes. When finished, you should see the RPA login prompt.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 82

In addition to installing the correct RP OS version, the replacement chassis needs additional configuration
changes and validation steps before it can be used in the RPA Replacement Wizard for replacing the
faulted RPA.

First, the BIOS password is set, and then the temporary management IP address is configured when
prompted after logging into the RPA as user boxmgmt.

The next steps can use the temporary IP address in a Putty SSH session. After the RPA login, as user
boxmgmt, select in the Main menu Setup and then Advanced Options.

Scripts provided in the procedure can be copied and pasted into the option Run script. The first script
validates the RPA Gen6 installation, the second script enables web access for the BMC port.

Finally, the BMC support is configured. The BMC access can be configured for the WAN, LAN, or for the
dedicated BMC port. This is done with the information from the customer according to their security needs.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 83

When replacing the faulted RPA in the cluster, use the Deployment Manager and its RPA Replacement
Wizard. All the steps in the RPA Replacement Wizard are the same as the previous RPA generation.

In the Storage configuration screen, select the option Spoof the HBA WWNs of the RPA being
replaced, so that no rezoning is necessary.

If the RPA is successfully replaced, the RP system will automatically redistribute the consistency groups
that were running on the replaced RPA to the new RPA. Refer to the RecoverPoint Installation and
Deployment Guide for additional details for replacing an RPA.

To change the installation parameters for a RecoverPoint cluster, the first step is to create a procedure
using RecoverPoint SolVe Desktop.

Here are the steps to generate the procedure document:

Launch the SolVe Desktop from your local machine and select RecoverPoint from the product list.

Step 1: Select Change RPA installation Parameters

Step 2: Select an appropriate version of the RecoverPoint, and

Step 3: Choose the destination folder for the procedures document

The procedure document will be saved in the MS Word format in the specified location.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 88

RPA installation parameter modifications may include changing RPA, gateway, or subnet IP address of
the LAN or WAN.

As of release 3.5, RecoverPoint Deployment Manager has a Modification Wizard to help you non-
disruptively modify the settings of a system of up to two clusters (3.5.x) or an individual cluster (4.0 or
later) from a single management point. The procedure is done without replication downtime, without
requiring a full sweep, and without journal loss.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 89

First, launch the Deployment Manager 5.0 and from the Deployment Manager Wizard selection screen,
select the “Cluster Modification Wizard” option.

Starting in RecoverPoint 4.0, cluster modification is performed on one cluster at a time. To perform cluster
modification on another cluster, you must log into that cluster using another instance of the Cluster
Modification Wizard. The steps of the Cluster Modification Wizard are covered in detail in the following
slides.

The Cluster Modification Wizard allows you to select one of two modes:

1. Create a new cluster modification configuration file

The system creates a new cluster modification configuration file. The configuration settings of the existing
RPAs are added to the configuration file. The system uses these settings to complete the cluster
modification. Provide a valid file name and directory location. By default, the file name and directory
location is C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\RecoverPoint\MOD_config.properties.

2. Continue a modification from a saved cluster configuration file

The system loads the settings from a previously saved cluster modification configuration file. The system
allows you to complete the cluster modification using this file.

Once the wizard is open and you click Next, the system will automatically save the configuration settings
in the configuration file you create.

This lesson covers registering RecoverPoint, including when registering RecoverPoint is required, and
how to register RecoverPoint online, by email, or by phone.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 100

It is required to register RecoverPoint:

• After installing a RecoverPoint system

• After adding additional RP clusters to an existing system

• When upgrading a RecoverPoint system to a different code level (If the system was previously
connected, it will automatically register the changes with Dell EMC)

There are three ways to register RecoverPoint: online, through email, or by phone.

Copyright © 2017 Dell Inc. RecoverPoint Ugrade and Maintenance 101

RecoverPoint system reports and alerts are sent through SMTP, but can be configured for transfer through
a customer's ESRS server, or the RecoverPoint built-in FTPS server. Both, system reports and system
alerts, are enabled by default.

Please be aware that some activities must be completed before registering RecoverPoint:

• The RecoverPoint registration process will fail if you do not first configure your SMTP.

• To send system reports and alerts, a permanent RecoverPoint license must exist in the system; system
reports and alerts will not work with a temporary license.

• Before making changes to System Reports and Alerts and configuring SMTP, please make sure:
o To transfer system reports and alerts using SMTP or ESRS, ensure that port 25 is open and
available for SMTP traffic.
o To transfer system reports and alerts using FTPS, ensure that ports 990 and 989 are open and
available for FTPS traffic.

The final step in registering RecoverPoint online is to send the Post-Deployment Form: Click Send Form
to automatically send the form to the EMC Install Base group. The Send Form dialog box is displayed, as
shown here.
In the Send Form dialog box, enter the email address of the person who is in charge of RecoverPoint
maintenance and operation.
Please be aware that Call home event 8000 is sent to Dell EMC and the updated registration information
and an email is sent to the specified email address from EMC Customer Support to verify that the
registration details were updated successfully in the Dell EMC Install Base.
Once the email address is entered, click OK, and then wait a couple of minutes. Go to Select Dashboard
> System Events and look for event 8000 “Calling home”. If event 8000 is logged, the registration details
were successfully sent to the Dell EMC Install Base.
The additional information automatically sent along with the information that you entered into the post-
deployment form, per RPA cluster are:
• Software serial ID
• Hardware serial IDs for RPAs 1-8
• RecoverPoint software version
• Cluster name
• License type
• Connect home method
• The System ID (identical for all RPA clusters in a RecoverPoint system)
Now your RecoverPoint online registration is complete.
