CH 9 LIGHT: REFLECTION AND REFRACTION CLASS X

Topics: Refraction, Spherical Lens , Power of lens

1 If refractive index of water is 4/3 and that of glass is 3/2. Find the refractive index of glass w.r.t.
water.

2 The refractive index of a material is 1.33. If the velocity of light in vacuum is 3 × 10 8m/s, find the
velocity of light in the material.

3 The velocity of light in air is 3 × 108m/s.. Calculate the velocity of light in diamond of refractive
index 2.5

4 The refractive index of glass, when a ray of light travels from air to glass is 1.5. Calculate the
refractive index when light travels from glass to air.

5 A convex lens of focal length 10cm is placed at a distance of 12cm from a wall. How far from the
lens should an object be placed so as to form its real image on the wall?

6 If an object of 7cm height is placed at a distance of 12cm from a convex lens of focal length 8cm,
find the position, nature and height of the image.

7 An object 4 cm high is placed at a distance of 10cm from a convex lens of focal length 20cm. Find
the position, nature and size of the image.

8 A concave lens produces an image 20cm from the lens of an object placed 30cm from the lens.
Calculate the focal length of the lens.

9 The magnification of a spherical lens is +0.5. What is the nature of lens and image?

10 If an object is placed at a distance of 50cm from a concave lens of focal length 20cm, find the
position, nature and height of the image.

11 A concave lens produces an image 20cm from the lens of an object placed 30cm from the lens.
Calculate the power of the lens.

12 A convex lens is of focal length 10 cm. What is its power?

13 Two thin lenses of power +3.5 D and –2.5 D are placed in contact. Find the power and focal length of
the lens combination.

14 A convergent lens of power 8D is combined with a divergent lens of power –10D. Calculate focal
length of the combination

15 The refractive index of glass, when a ray of light travels from air to glass is 1.5. Calculate the
refractive index when light travels from glass to air.
Answer the following questions:
1 (a) Define radius of curvature and focal length of a spherical mirror and show it on a figure.
(b) Write relation between radius of curvature and focal length of a spherical mirror.

2 A student wants to project the image of a candle flame on a screen 60 cm in front of a mirror by
keeping the flame at a distance of 15 cm from its pole.
a. Write the type of mirror he should use.
b. Find the linear magnification of the image produced.
c. What is the distance between the object and its image?
d. Draw a ray diagram to show the image formation in this case.

3 (a) State Snell’s law of refraction.

(b) When a ray of light travelling in air enters obliquely into a glass slab, it is observed that the
light ray emerges parallel to the incident ray but it is shifted sideways slightly. Draw a ray diagram
to illustrate it.

4 State the laws of refraction of light. Explain the term ‘absolute refractive index of a medium’ and
write an expression to relate it with the speed of light in vacuum.

5 Water has refractive index 1.33 and alcohol has refractive index 1.36. Which of the two medium
is optically denser? Give reason for your answer. Draw a ray diagram to show the path of a ray of
light passing obliquely from water to alcohol

6 In an experiment to study refraction through a glass slab, it is observed that a ray of light
undergoing refraction emerges parallel to the direction of incident ray. Why does it happen so?
Explain with the help of a diagram.

7 (a) Define absolute refractive index.

(b) The path of a light ray from three different media A, B and C for a given angle of incidence is
shown below. Study the diagrams and answer the following questions:

(i) Which of the three media A, B or C has maximum optical density?

(ii) Through which of the three media, will the speed of light be maximum?
(iii) Will the light travelling from A to B bend towards or away from the normal?
(iv) Will the refractive index of B relative to C be more than unity or less than unity?
8 A student focussed the image of a candle flame on a white screen by placing the flame at various
distances from a convex lens. He noted his observations as:
Annalise the data and find focal length. Rewrite the observation table for image distance and object
distance in reference of C and F. Also add column to write the nature and size of the image. Suggest
the correction in above data if required
